No fouls for Faw in the first half. Picked up his 4th with 8:18 left. Picked up his 3rd with about 16 left in the half and went to the bench 3 fouls in a span of 3:01. On two of the three, the fouled player made the basket. Can’t have your senior big man committing as many soft fouls as he does. He’s been great offensively but he has to get better at avoiding the soft fouls.

Ok so when will someone start to listen. How long will this be tolerated?

Until he has all his own players? Something that was accelerated considerably last season.
On a more serious note, for you coaches on the board, what strengths does Nelson have as a game coach that I might be missing?

Well I would suggest few to none. Is there any shred of contrary evidence?

Why are we the only school in the PL that doesn’t have complete homers as announcers? I watch games on mute. I’ve found it helpful. Home or away. Seriously.

Let’s see 4 wins 22 losses in less than two seasons. Why is this ineptness tolerated?

To piss you off. And actually, it's 5-35.

In practice, I hope they stress better defense. Not easy to outscore everybody in the 80's.

You'd have to have a repeat of the exodus of last year to consider any change in the head coach.

Practically, CBN is going nowhere anytime soon. He is ADMBs “hire” so there is zero sense of urgency to move on, especially given the financial state of the College related to the pandemic. He likely has at least 3 years left on his deal after this season as one of the highest paid employees of the college - if not the highest paid. I wouldnt be surprised if he got an additional year on his deal prior to the season sense the pandemic could be viewed at a “lost “ season b/c of all that comes with it. The storyline from the school will be how the team is “young” and needs time to develop regardless of how red the flags about his coaching ability or style.

I give Nelson credit for recruiting Gates as a transfer, getting him through admissions and well prepared, and credit for Faw's development, minus the inefficient fouling. The other newcomers look promising but have to be balanced against contributors like Pridgen, Niego and Lowder who left.

I find it hard to believe MB could get an extra year past TPTB. They can't be pleased with MBB so far under CBN. What message would it send to other coaches? There's a mass exit by student athletes, you go 3-29 and then get rewarded?

The young men are playing hard, they clearly are more athletic and quicker, and the upside for the future is pretty good. The inexperience on this team is real, and that includes the players and Nelson.
We want a finished product and that is not reality, given we don't have a head coach that came with head coaching experience. We can dissect this a thousand ways, and if things aren't demonstrably better by the end of year four a change might be up for discussion.
At this point, and as much as I/we might be frustrated by his coaching, he deserves the chance to grow(not meant to be or sound arrogant), let his players develop, and results improve. Incredibly presumptuous on my part, but if I were the AD, or one of his assistants, I would have him spend time with George, Ralph, Cousy, Ronnie, and Donovan and just listen. There is a wealth of experience and knowledge there to help him become a better coach
Since we are so dedicated as supporters and friends, remember the role of a friend is to be present and patient. We all are present, we now need to be more patient. And this is coming from a person that has his fingers crossed and holding a four leaf clover.

Bill Carmody was the highest paid HC employee while he was there, so it is possible CBN is also in that category.

An additional contract year is more a reflection of the pandemic as opposed to CBN’s coaching success. I’d liken it to the NCAA granting athletes an extra playing season.. Any spring or fall sport head coach would look to have their contract extended for an additional “COVID year” if their season was cancelled and I’d suspect that’s no different for winter sports playing in an abbreviated season amidst the challenges of the pandemic.

Just imagine if the contributors on this team were Faw, Butler, Wade and two frosh. Ouch.

This team is very young. We have to remember the returners have not been on winning teams, and the newcomers haven't figured it out yet...It will take time, and I for one, see things getting better each time out..Those last 6 minutes of the game have to improve..HC has to learn to defend better, rotate faster and step in sooner. On offense we have to shoot it better, pass it better (too many floaters for passes), and figure out how to make winning plays...score at the rim and hit open shots. Plus somebody has to take charge, Austin, RJ, Faw, Gates, somebody ! We sorely miss a finisher!

In allocating credit for Gerrale Gates we should also recognize the strength and conditioning team for resculpting the guy into the figure he is today. He is down 20 pounds from his listed UNO weight and I am betting he is a step or two quicker and able to play 30+ minutes per game at a hjgh level.

Agree with trimster that it’s hard to imagine that Louth wasn’t ready yesterday but could all of a sudden be ready to make a meaningful contribution 24 hours later. Mike isn’t even dressing so he’s not going to suddenly help today. The mystery man is Martindale. No idea if he’s hurt or in the doghouse for some reason. We could certainly use him for some depth and shooting today. Would also be nice to see him a little more active on the glass if he plays. Would also be nice if all five of Matt’s fouls today are going for blocked shots and none of the ticky tack ones that have plagued him. Glad to see Martindale getting double digit minutes today and maybe not in the doghouse . Last season there was too much kenneling going on .

No offense but I’d say HC basketball fans have exhibited quite a bit of “patience” over the many years. Really tired of losing and all the excuses to be honest. I get a down year or two but we are well beyond that.
