What does BN call for the last play? Go down low! Draw some contact. He drew the contact. Your call was right on.

Really could have used that foul call. Ton of body from Records.

Down 2, 9 seconds left, side out of bounds — too bad we didn’t have an experienced assistant to X & O (!!!) up a play to get our best player a layup.
Oh wait...

If the contact would only be a misdemeanor on the street the refs aren't calling it.

Was a valiant effort. Super fun to watch down the stretch, hurts to lose this way as usual

Before Johnson's pass was picked off a trey should have been launched.

HC has to develop confidence that they can make a shot under pressure...Wade had an open 10 footer on the first possession and passed it up, forced Faw to fire up a 3....Too often this is happening, Austin is the only one showing the desire to take the shot...

Cummings has all 11 of Colgate’s points this OT period. Tough tough loss, loved the fight, the potential is clearly there and by next year we’ll be closing out these sort of games

Very nice defensive work down the stretch. Matt Faw gets called for a foul 10 times out of 10 on what happened on Gates' game tying hoop. Should have had a real chance to win with 3 seconds left.

I think if Johnson practices launching a three as soon as he reaches the three point line, before the defense has a chance to set up to defend it, it will be a useful tool to use in situational basketball such as down 7-9 points with 1:33 to go. If you get enough practice reps at full speed your accuracy should be similar to your overall three point shooting average.

Desperately need a couple of guys to develop into consistent scorers Gates is a one man team on offense now. Don't know how he can go to hole every time and not get to the line once. Very good defensive effort missed a real opportunity today with Colgate going 3-20 from downtown.

A few of my takeaways:
1. Gates continues to be a phenomenal find by Nelson and staff. His skill and effort in the post is commendable. A combination that we haven’t seen enough of in recent memory. Although he didn’t get to the line today, he’s an effective FT shooter (upwards of 70%). My hope is that he is able to expand his game to shoot the 3 or longer 2 point jump shot. It’s clear that teams are sagging into the paint asking him to take that shot. If he continues to develop offensively over the next 2 years, we’re looking at an all conference level player. Furthermore, if the team defense is going to take a leap, it will come from protecting the paint and fortifying the front court. As good of player Gates has been, we need a better defender than Faw down there in the long term complementing him. It will be difficult to manufacture offense with 2 low post bigs. It’s possible, but spacing is vital and Gates’ FT % provides me hope that he’ll continue to expand his game providing Nelson with increased lineup versatility. 2. I continue to love what RJ brings to this team in the backcourt. He’s clearly the most comfortable player on the ball and now we’re seeing his ability to shoot the 3, attack the rim downhill, pull up or hit the floater. He’s an efficient player and as we’ve seen, a capable passer setting his teammates up. 3. He didn’t light up the stat sheet today, but I really like the look of Bo Montgomery. His length, athleticism, defense and ability to attack the rim and find his teammates bodes well for the future. If I’m Nelson, I’d love to see him space the floor for Bo to take advantage. The shot will come and over 4 years, his handle will tighten. 4. Decent effort by the seniors, but today flashed their limitations. They’ll give us 100%, but your defense isn’t getting better until Faw improves or is replaced by better players. Butler gets the most out of his skill, but left me wanting more from a senior. Even when he was recruited, I don’t think it was the plan for the offense to be built around him - a victim of circumstance. I’ll always appreciate the hustle and rebounding and effort. 5. Looking for someone on the bench to step up and provide some punch. Wade, Judson look like they have something to offer and Bubba is a great athlete, but clearly adjusting.
Onto the next...

Statistically, our 3 point shooting, 4-18, was a killer From two, we were 21-54, pretty good.

I disagree with the board here on the choice of play with 9 seconds to go in regulation down 2.
That said, I give tremendous credit to Gates for making a clutch play....and yes IMO he was fouled.
Here's why I disagree.
What is my goal as coach going into the final play? TO WIN THE GAME.
My goal as the coach there is NOT to get it into OT. Another 5 minutes against an experienced heavy favorite is not what I would have wanted.
So.....with that said....I would have sent it into Gates, had him make one quick move to draw a crowd....then kick it out to any of three players who would all be beyond the 3 pt line....RJ.....Butler....or Faw for a three point shot.
If it goes in, we WIN. If it doesn't, we lose.
Here's the percentages as I see it.
1) The Nelson choice: 50% chance Gates hits the shot and 20% chance we win in OT. OVERALL CHANCE OF WINNING THE GAME: 10% (.50 x .20)
2) Shoot a three choice: Maybe a 25% chance it goes in. OVERALL CHANCE OF WINNING THE GAME: 25%
Many will disagree with these percentages and I understand and respect that. But in my mind, if your goal is to WIN THE GAME, you shoot a three there and hope your player makes it.
