Per the HC social media channels, Vincent Rougeau, Dean of BC Law School, will be the new President. Those who predicted a non-Jesuit layperson were correct. I imagine an email will follow shortly.

Although I can't say I'm familiar with Mr. Rougeau my initial reaction is that I've never been happier about anything the HC has done, because:
1. The school was willing to expand the talent pool and consider lay candidates. 2. His credentials look stellar 3. He seems to understand the HC culture/mission 4. HC hired a black man to lead it

Perhaps HC will send him to the seminary

I am not suggesting this is a pre-requisite for the job, but I find it interesting that in all of the bio material up on the school site, there is not even a mention of his 'faith tradition' - the fact that the school says absolutely nothing about the subject is disappointing - if he comes from a Protestant background, fine - but say so - if he's Catholic, fine - but say so

Phreek, I'm pretty sure, like me, that you attend most/all of HC Zoom calls. The one with the search committee on 11/4/2020 they indicated that they hoped/expected to make the decision in February . . . . and they did. The only question in my mind was how long it would take to do the obligatory courtesy calls to tell the also-rans that they were not selected. You do that after the #1 pick says "yes" and you nail down the details. I've known other hiring managers who made the mistake of telling the also-rans they didn't get the job first and then #1 decided against taking. Now you have to go through the embarrassment of telling #2 (or #3 or . . . ), "you know when we said you didn't get the job? We changed our minds." I can't say that I am surprised, much less shocked, that it is a non-Jesuit, layman, of color. My only pitch to the search committee was to pick a Holy Cross alum, someone who understands Holy Cross in their gut and doesn't spout how they have long admired the College from afar and never quite "get" the culture.. Since my hoped-for $100 million donation didn't actuate having not won the lottery, they didn't take my one small bit of advice. Best of luck, Vince, we'll be praying and rooting for you! [Now, immediately start forgetting you ever worked at BC! ]

He is the author of the book "Christians in the American Empire: Faith and Citizenship in the New World Order," and is a senior fellow at the London-based Centre for Theology and Community

Joseph M. O’Keefe, S.J.,’76, Provincial of the USA East Province of the Society of Jesus, remarked, “During our time together at Boston College, I discovered that Vincent Rougeau has a deep understanding of, and appreciation for, the Jesuit, Catholic vision of higher education. Moreover, he has the leadership skills to make that vision a reality. I am delighted to welcome Vince and his wife Robin to our Holy Cross family.“ Good enough for alum Fr. O’Keefe, good enough for me.

One random downside - they'll probably have to pay this guy. Jesuits work for room and board

This is great news. A step in the right direction. Another Jesuit institution, Xavier, just hired their first lay president who will start July 1. The trend continues.

Sorry, Ray, but I'm with KY on this. This is important to me or it is a sign that Holy Cross is not only losing the "Jesuit" but might also be losing the "Catholic" in our alma mater's identity.
On a lighter note, and so not to disappoint 8485 (and others?), a non-Catholic is even more likely to not bring back the Crusader (no, don't give me "we're still called Crusaders" nonsense).

Yep, that's likely a "given" and maybe Phreek can expound on some houses HC has bought recently that will suffice at least temporarily. Oh, and don't expect me to donate more for the "campaign for Vince's new home".

I am going to assume he is a practicing Catholic until I see something that says otherwise.

Perhaps the fact that the omission of his faith or lack thereof in the announcement indeed means he is a practicing Catholic with the thinking there is a presumption of Catholic unless they said otherwise? Like some other posters, it is important to me but it'll all come out eventually and I can be patient . . . . . for a change.

Are we looking for video of him attending Sunday Mass for the past X years? I don't see how you can read this bio and have any questions about him understanding the importance of Holy Cross' identity as a Catholic, Jesuit institution. Whether or not he goes to Mass on Sunday (frankly, none of my business), everything about his life's work says he has that understanding.

Congratulations to Vincent. I hope he is able to continue to further our Catholic identity, fundraise (I admittedly was hoping for a Jesuit or an alumnus of the College), and someone who supports athletics (without micromanaging). I am hopeful and optimistic.

Yep, that's likely a "given" and maybe Phreek can expound on some houses HC has bought recently that will suffice at least temporarily. Oh, and don't expect me to donate more for the "campaign for Vince's new home". I looked at 32 College St. for a President's house, and it looks to be too small, and would need to be enlarged. IIRC, this was once on the National Register of Historic Place, but HC may have de-listed it. His wife is a pediatrician, so I assume she will continue her practice (northern Middlesex County). She is a graduate of Yale and Yale Medical. Perhaps there is no rush for him to move to Worcester. ________________________________________ I will remind that "The College is an Equal Employment Opportunity Employer and complies with all Federal and Massachusetts laws concerning equal opportunity and affirmative action in the workplace." The college cannot and does not set a pre-requisite qualification that an employee be a Catholic, a Catholic in communion with the church; a devout and practicing Catholic, etc. The college once did prohibit any one other than a Catholic from enrolling, but the U.S. government put a stop to that.
