Interesting last 24 hours in the NBA - Mark Cuban had ordered that the anthem not be played at Mavs games this season and indeed it was not - then he had to go public with his policy which received mixed reviews as you can imagine - now czar Nate Silver wisely has stepped in and doesn't want to offend any fans who might be on the fence about returning to NBA arenas and the general public's reaction to such a policy if it spread to other franchises - Smart move just announced by the league office that the anthem is to be played before all NBA games and Cuban is complying.

I've heard some debate about this and some thought that no one cared because it was going on for 10 games or so with no complaints. Other than the finals of a sport, it is rare to hear the national anthem on TV. Only those in attendance would have an opportunity to be aware. Mavericks timing was good because this was the year to fly under the radar. No fans at all in MA, so if the Celtics tried it, only game personnel would know

It is too bad it has all come to this. The national anthem before a game was a chance for us to leave all our differences aside, stand together in unity, and after have a couple of hours of a politics free environment. It was a way to decompress and let the air out of the balloon of a politically charged environment. Now, even sports is politicized. There are fewer outlets for the public to come together and enjoy each other. Another reason to be at each other’s throat. The balloon will soon burst. Tryin to take the anthem away before games will cause even more resentment. Why people think it’s a good idea to end this tradition is beyond me.

I always enjoyed it, but never understood why the anthem has to be mandatory at sporting events. I'm patriotic, but forced or contrived patriotism is kind of disrespectful imho.

Some people wonder why it even makes sense to play it before sporting events. It's not played when you go to the movies, or before a golf match, etc. 2. There is a reference in the never sung second stanza that references slaves that unsettles people. 3. For many black people the song represents the institutional and systemic racism that they deal with every day. Hence many athletes kneeling during its playing. Many black people consider Lift Every Voice and Sing the Black National Anthem and would like to make it the anthem for everyone.

When Kate Smith (R.I.P.) regularly sang "God Bless America" in Philly (Flyers games?), I believe, was that in lieu of or in addition to the National Anthem?
Hey, if no National Anthem sung before NHL games, they don't have to also sing that goldarn "O, Canada" too. I kid. The Canadian anthem sure sounds musically better.

The anthem should only be played before international sporting events.

I don't go to a lot of Broadway shows but in the 5-6 I have gone to, I don't recall any of them being preceded by the National Anthem.

Will HC soon be playing the Irish National Anthem before WBB games? The Irish Anthem is sung before boxing matches in Ireland and was sung in Las Vegas before the Connor McGregor/Floyd Mayweather bout, as was the Star Spangled Banner. Not necessary but part of the show I guess.

Well, IIRC, the great George M Cohan was known to have the Star Bangled Banner present in a number of his shows - both in the flags that were physically present and through music...the National Anthem.

I've never been to a Broadway show that involved George M. Cohan so I'll take your word for it, but I've been to a lot of Broadway shows and there's been no National Anthem. Maybe we should reach out to Bart Sher.

So, who else is old enough to have watched "Yankee Doodle Dandy" starring the late, great Jimmy Cagney starring as George M. Cohan, a native born Ocean Stater (Providence)?
In NY, on WOR channel 9, they had a daily series "Million Dollar Movie" (which was a lot of money in those days). I must have watched "Yankee Doodle Dandy" at least 15 times.
From Wiki:
I did not realize Cagney won an Oscar for his Cohan role.

Loved the Million Dollar Movie (Channel 9 in NYC). There was also the 5 o'clock movie on CBS. It started with a picture of an anniversary clock while "The Syncopated Clock" played in the background. Some vintage B+W films there as well.
My favorites there were Gungha Din (saw it about a dozen times) and Sahara (starring a Lee tank I'm North Africa (at least 20 viewings). .

The increasing politicization of sports makes me much less interested in them than I once was. I am definitely not alone. In my opinion, the whole Kapernick thing could have been handled differently by Roger Goodell and the NFL in a way that respected the flag and all that it means to so many while also supporting the players in a strong and tangible way to help them bring light to the social justice issues that impact them and maybe actually try to improve them. Instead, everything has to be a fight, no one listens to anyone else and the country is in much worse shape for it. Doesn’t appear to be getting any better and we have no one in leadership on either side who appears willing to actually lead in a constructive way. Imagine if all the hundreds of thousands of hours that have been spent on social media arguing about kneeling for the anthem at sporting events or whether we should play the anthem at sporting events had instead been spent volunteering in our communities and making real people’s lives better. Crazy, I know,

Nobody could talk a song better than Jimmy C.
IIRC The Million Dollar Movie on channel 9 used the theme from Gone with the Wind in its opening, on return from commercials, and in promotional ads.
Did WABC channel 7 in NY have the 4:30 movie or was that a bit after your time? Remember them having Go Ape Week two or three times a year and they’d show all 5 of the original Planet of the Apes movies, in order, on consecutive days. Probably saw all 5 movies a dozen times.

Yes, "Gone with the Wind" was $1 million dollar theme song. Saw the original King Kong movie there as well as the cheaper but sweeter version ape movie "Mighty Joe Young." Yeah that other show was after my time.
Oh, they didn't play the national anthem before each of those movies. 😂

One extra pea for lunch would show up in some of the ladies costumes. Those are tight.

We had "Dialing for Dollars" the two o'clock movie on WNAC-7 in Boston with host Ed Miller.
