In the last four games Austin Butler has passed Jim Schnurr, Keith Hochstein, George Kaftan, Jim McCaffrey, R.J. Evans, Torey Thomas, and Paul Durkee to reach #26 on HC's career scoring list. This, of course, is based on total points, not scoring average That's a heck of an all star team he passed.

Was out coaching youth basketball all day (no T’s for those wondering) and only got to watch the parts of the game that are available on ESPN+ a little while ago. Very happy with the win. Team looked much improved from the parts I saw.

Here's a tidbit that might spur some discussion: per KenPom Holy Cross has won 3 of the 4 slowest paced games and has lost the 7 fastest paced games ....

One more thought--Judson Martindale's deep shooting has come around
First 5 games= 3 for 17 Last 6 games= 8 for 14

For future reference, while the video was not working, the "Live Stats" were working perfectly.
It allowed me to follow the flow of the first half and gave me the minute to minute box score and overall game score during the second half.
Hope no one needs it again but we have at least 2 more home games (the sites for the last 2 Colgate game are listed as TBA) and it sounds like the upgrade in technology at Hart is a bit farther away than that.

That is very good for him and for the team. Our style of play needs someone hitting from long range to open things up a bit inside. It is godto see Faw regain his long range shot as well. It was frightening to see BU get right to the rim and be unable to hit a bunny from that close...as it was when it happened to HC in a few games. Today's game could be a complete reversal for them. Would 2 wins in a row be possible? Sure, hat is possible but we need to have hot shooting again - that over 50% shooting would be nice, as well as hitting virtually every free throw. (PS: It sas nièce of ESPN+ to carry the long stretches with no broadcast in their replay and their requests for our patience. That way those who were unable to watch the original stream could have the full "ESPN experience.")

Nice effort by HC yesterday. Really enjoyable to watch. The maturity of the freshmen is understandably slow but coming along. You can see it.
But one thing that was driving me crazy: HCBN, when inbounding in the backcourt, please tell the guards not to run to the corners when the other team is pressing and trapping. That's exactly where BU wanted the ball to go. That's why it is open. Get some inbounds sets that allow for picks to free up the inbound pass in more of the middle of the court and maybe even occasionally GO LONG. Just a thought.....

When we slow opponents at the defensive end (limiting transition opportunities, making them work the clock with on-ball pressure in the half-court) we are consistently better. Would be interested in any data that relates defensive EFG% to opponent time of possession.

My mistake on this (just watched what there was of the replay) - I was referring to Bubba's drive where he used his body nicely to ward off the defender, while laying it high off the backboard.
It felt like. for one of the first times, we got a glimpse of how they want things to go - the use of the perimeter guys to cause challenges for the opposition to get in an offensive flow; at the other end, to score off both attacking the hoop and threes off of penetration. Really liking how the perimeter rotation is developing. Big question mark at this point for the future is the bigs; just don't have enough to go on.
Really looking forward to seeing what happens today.
As for the PL tournament, with such unbalanced schedules the only fair thing to do as far as I'm concerned is to allow everyone to participate. I feel like Matt and Austin are getting the crap end of the stick with this. On the other hand, if the team keeps improving maybe it will be a moot point! At any rate, I think the 12 games against CU-BU might really accelerate the development of the team.
I really wasn't kidding about playing the rest of the games on the road, if the TV production is going to continue to be like yesterday. I plead ignorance, as I do on many things (so no lectures, please), but it seems to me we shouldn't have to look at a free throw shooters' facial expression to guess whether or not a free throw was good. And I would think you learn in sports broadcasting 101 to give frequent score/time remaining updates when the on screen scoreboard is not working. End of rant.

May or not be a coincidence that Ryan got the nod to start for the first time, logged a season-high 30 minutes, and played well at both ends - first time we've put two solid halves of defensive basketball together this season.
Nelson has tried Martindale and Montgomery as starters in that spot - maybe he found what he was looking for yesterday.

Wonder if Montgomery is "hors de combat" today w/the injury he suffered yesterday.
Getting back to the unbalanced schedule, I think that MB and BN opted for the "sure thing" of two more scheduled games w/Colgate versus the uncertainty of a trip to Hamilton a week later. That is, of course, if they had any say in the matter; w/the Patriot League, one has no idea how decisions are made.

I watched the replay of the game and noticed Montgomery was on the floor for the last minute or so and Johnson was on the sideline. Whatever happened to him didn’t appear to be as serious as it looked when he limped off.

Real nice effort by a lot of people yesterday, it sure was nice to see some shots dropping. It looks to me like the defense has stabilized and should be okay going forward. I think that our progress or lack thereof will come on the offensive end. If we can get consistent production from a number of players as was the case yesterday, with 8 scoring at least 5 points, we'll be in good shape. Yesterday we hit the 3's and a couple of the younger guys finished some shots at the rim they had missed previously. While we're not going to hit 50% of our 3 point shots every game we have to do much better than the 25% rate we hit in the prior 6 games. If we can become even average from beyond the arc it should free things up inside for Gates who may only have to deal with one defender rather than three, and for more slashing drives for Montgomery, Humphrey and Johnson. Will be very interested to see if we can keep the offense going today.

This is one of the few things that drives me crazy..Coaches put a lot on the shoulders of point guard to beat the press. Late in my coaching days I liked inbounding the ball to my big and running my guards up the floor in front of him...or throwing the ball up the sideline to inbound it to an open big just above the top of the key..stay out of the corners! It warmed my heart to see Coach Nelson use a second guard as a kickback...Wade took this position as RJ would go to the corner, I still wish a cutter would move to the middle to reverse the ball..

I spend more time than a person should thinking about this. Against any kind of zone press, my youth travel teams try to inbound to a big on the sideline a little higher than the foul line extended and then pass it immediately to one of two guards running up the middle of the floor. Usually works okay. But not always. Like hearing other ideas.

It looks to me like the defense has stabilized and should be okay going forward. I hope you feel good about jinxing us. Defense as of 3:30 mark in the first half has been porous at best.

Usually works okay. But not always. Like hearing other ideas. The guy I worked for on a youth team, a veteran coach who knew his stuff; really didn't do that. He wanted a quick cut, catch, then get it back to the primary ball handler; or for the person catching the ball to take it up if that were in order. I always liked the big distributing it, like you do. He'd rather the big was a safety valve, or have that player at midcourt.
