Maine joined Howard this week as the 4th and 5th D.1 men’s basketball teams to cancel the rest of the season due to covid concerns . UMaine had not practiced since Jan 17. Looks to be the prudent decision

I wouldn't be surprised if Umass Amherst followed quickly, given the lockdown going on their campus.

If we don't make the cut for the PLT, maybe we can get into another league tournament that needs an eighth team that's still standing.😉

Howard and Maine a combined 3-11 this year. Teams playing for something definitely less likely to cancel when confronted with challenging circumstances.

^ "challenging circumstances" beyond schools control is what puts teams in the hole not being able to compete. Not like they were hoping for this outcome.

My only point is that it seems to only be teams who are struggling who are not able to dig out of the hole. The records of the cancelled teams are what they are. At some point the struggle isn’t worth it and maybe that point comes sooner when your record isn’t very good.

The Colgate women are a good example as they have been crushed with injuries and even had to ppd games for being under the ncaa minimal of players.

Looks to be the prudent decision Could you please remind us what the other three schools are. Obviously, these are over and above the Ivy League. Since you knew they were 4th and 5th, I'm hoping you can help me be lazy and not do the leg work. I think of Maine and Howard as low majors. I'm curious where the other 3 programs land in the pecking order. If UMass joined the group as some here speculate is possible, I think that would be a bigger story than Howard and Maine combined. On some level, Howard and Maine is a good thing. There was another thread where it was discussed about high D-I women's programs shutting down more than men. The cynic in me made me wonder if money was a factor. I wouldn't expect COVID to hit women athletes harder than men

Chicago St., UMD Eastern Shore, and Bethune-Cookman are the other three.
