Because they were only tentative and one or both schools decided they didn't feel like playing I'm sure it was HC. Colgate had a lot to play for, i.e. the #1 seed. Now they may drop to #2 and have to travel to Annapolis for a championship game. Also Colgate didn't have any long bus ride to dissuade them from playing over the weekend..

First we would have to win either the 8-9 game or possibly the 7-8 game and then play Navy, a somewhat easier opponent.

From HC's standpoint, two games in Hamilton, return home, which then leaves one day of preparation against an opponent you probably haven't played this season, before a game against that opponent on Wednesday.

No MBB games showing on the HC website schedule. That may be a good thing insofar as a.) if our friends at AWP hold serve this weekend and send BU home with a couple losses, b.) the Mids do the same to Loyola, and c.) Lafayette does us a solid against LU, we'll should be at Colgate for the 1-8 game. The Raiders not knowing how well we've been playing over the past week will be ripe for an upset. Everybody on-board? Note that in your scenario, Colgate would fall to #2 and Navy would be the 1 seed.

I could see the advantages of playing Colgate but can see the advantages of resting and preparing for the tournament, too. I was hoping for a split if we did play. Colgate should volunteer to drive to Worcester if the games are that important to them.

Having the weekend off is probably a good thing.

HC coaching staff will be watching a lot of ESPN+ over the weekend. Much better, IMO, then watching Crusaders and Raiders run up and own the court for the fifth and sixth times this season.

I disagree. The goal this year is to play as many games as you can and improve. Coaches watching Loyola MD play is better then coaching in a game against the best team? Really?

Good chance a prepared and rested HC wins a play-in game. if so, next game would be HC against Navy or Colgate. Maybe Gates is back by then. Maybe HC gets Navy. Accepting your premise of repeatedly playing the best team so you can improve -- a take on the 'repetition is the mother of all learning' as the nuns would say -- would suggest that HC ought play a team like Colgate 10x a year.

I don't see why we can't get 2 games in the playoffs.. We can win the play-in game and then get a quarter final game...

You would think they would want the tournament to start sooner than later because what happens if a case pops up on one of the teams? The games will be pushed back? So playing these extra regular season games might not be worth it. I think Colgate and Navy are the two best teams and the most deserving record wise to represent the PL. But who knows this year. If a team tests positive, they will just forfeit. No time to push games back - given a likely 10-day quarantine - even without playing the extra regular season games. This is an interesting point and quandary. I haven't spent the time to poke around the interwebs for an answer, but what happens in the NCAA Tournament if a member of a team tests positive for corona? Does that team have to forfeit. Seems pretty ridiculous, if so.

I agree - little to be gained by making the trip to Hamilton. I wonder if HC gave Colgate the option to come to Worcester to play the games, otherwise no dice.. I would be ok to play the games if that was the case. Could the teams agree to play one game and not two? Would have given some recovery time with the Tournament starting Weds.

Given the tightness of the schedule, there is practically no time to quarantine and repeatedly test other members of the team to see if others are positive..

I believe that I saw on ESPN last night a statement that, if an NCAA entrant tested positive before the tournament started and, as a result, that team had to be quarantined, the particular league involved could designate another entrant for the slot. But, if that happened after the start of the tournament, the positive test/quarantine would result in a forfeit with the non-forfeiting team in the bracket moving on. Hopefully, that occurrence will be minimal, particularly in the later rounds.

League naming a substitute team makes sense if you're in a one bid league, but what if the 10th ranked team in the ACC that was seeded 11 gets a positive result, the ACC gets to name the 11th ranked team from the ACC as an at large? That make very little sense.

NCAA sense = $$$ Conferences $ share is based on # of teams that dance

Understood, but if at large teams are selected by a committee, why would replacement teams be selected by conferences?
And I'm not talking about favoring a 2005 HC mid-major vs. a P6 conference. Here's the current Net Rakings of the ACC and Big 10
11 Florida St. 14 Virginia 32 Clemson 40 Georgia Tech 44 North Carolina 48 Louisville 49 Duke 51 Virginia Tech 56 Syracuse 73 Notre Dame 78 NC State 87 Pittsburgh 156 Wake Forest 165 Boston College 167 Miami (FL)
3 Michigan 5 Illinois 6 Iowa 7 Ohio St. 18 Wisconsin 26 Purdue 30 Rutgers 31 Maryland 41 Penn St. 54 Indiana 65 Minnesota 68 Michigan St. 88 Northwestern 142 Nebraska
For arguments sake, let's say the last team in as an at large is Syracuse at #56
The Big 10 has 10 teams in (Michigan thru Indiana) The ACC has 9 teams in (Florida St thru Syracuse)
2 days before the tourney, North Carolina has a COVOD outbreak.
Do you think the Big 10, SEC, PAC 12, Big East, etc. will be satisfied with the ACC selecting their next team up (Notre Dame at 73) when there are 6 teams from the P6 Conferences higher ranked than Notre Dame?
58 Xavier - Big East 59 Ole Miss - SEC 60 Stanford - Pac-12 63 Kentucky - SEC 65 Minnesota - Big Ten 68 Michigan St. - Big Ten 73 Notre Dame - ACC
And of course there are the 9 other schools from non-P6 conferences that are also passed over.
And what if it's Michigan (a likely #1 seed) who tests positive? Does Minnesota replace them as a 1 seed? Doubtful.
I know it's the NCAA and generally when they make decisions like this, very little common sense comes into play. But it seems to me, once the field set, there's not much option but to have the infected team forfeit ... even if you're a 1 seed.

Otherwise replacement teams will be selected by the NCAA based on the "last four out" list.

Once a tourney game is played, there are no replacements Actually a few days before that. The deadline for replacing teams in both the men's and women's tournament is 6 PM on Tuesday March 16th. The men's "first four" is on March 18th and the women start on March 21st.

Bison 137 Your message clarifies the situation regarding at large berths and hc8485’s concern. The “non-replacement” rule will make completing a bracket more challenging than usual.

Yes, definitely more challenging, but no real way to predict. A #1 seed could pull out and be replaced by Richmond or Michigan State as the new top seed. So the first round matchup would be a 16th seed and what would effectively be a 17 seed.
