The women came from behind to win their first game against Lafayette.
I watched the first ten minutes of the first set, and though HC played as if they had just gotten off a long bus ride. (They may have.) HC's first serve went into the net, and it seemed to be going downhill from there.
Four set victory; HC winning three straight sets after losing the first. HC hosts Lafayette on Sunday.

Kudos to the volleyball team for a good start. Looking at their roster it appears that they have players from a wider geographical range than perhaps any other sports team at HC (except for maybe football). I wonder if there is any reason HC is getting players from Calif., Iowa, etc. Do they have scholarships to give?

Need to recruit in areas where volleyball is highly competitive at the high school and club level. States with the highest number of participants at the high school level are TX, CA, FL, and most of the midwestern states. New England and the Northeast, other than NY, are not recruiting hotspots. One reason may be that in much of the country tall girls increasingly are choosing volleyball over basketball University of Minnesota's roster: 6'1", 6'3", 5'9", 5'9", 6'0", 6'5", 6'2",6'5", 5'9", 6'3", 6'0", 6'5", 6'2", If HC's women's hoops team had a roster with comparable height, would it not dominate the PL, at least in rebounds and shot blocking?

One of our better players, #4 Carter, is a transfer from Marist and majoring in Physics. Marist has strong volleyball teams

Who cares about the Northeast was the strategy

Today's match is tied 1 set (25-20) to 1 (24-26) and the match is in the long break.

Blaney court nice for volleyball. But telecast needs work as the entire court is not displayed

The new automated cameras will need to be recalibrated after this game.

The camera angle isn't great but it looks like the players are all wearing masks. Really wearing them, not just as neck warmers.

HC wins the third set 25-20 and leads the match 2 sets to 1 over Lafayette. A 2-0 start to the season is in reach and could be very nice.

HC takes the 4th set 25 to 16 and the match 3 sets to 1. Well done volleyball...undefeated at 2-0 to start the season.

HC won today’s match 3-1 We have a senior laden team so we should be pretty good in this shortened season - can’t get too excited as the ‘Pard’s are perennial cellar dwellers in this sport

A win is a win, isn't it? It is nice to know that there are some sports where HC is not the perennial cellar-dweller.

That’s a very low bar that I don’t adhere to for any HC team - I invite you to look at the archives of our program and it shows one lousy season after another - as I said we have lots of experience on this team and we should expect success

Nice wins. Last time both teams played, 2019, Laf had a better record than HC

I did not set a bar anywhere. Expectations could mean a lot if the results of games were determined in any way by those expectations. I was merely pointing out that starting a season 2-0 is a positive thing. In fact, the spring sports that have played are presently: Volleyball 2-0 Mens Lax 1-0 For most folks, that is a good start. I am aware of past years, but, of course, this year is a fresh start and there is no need to go back over past seasons (Despite your apparent assumption that I am unaware of how those teams did, I am aware of past seasons and how rare wins have been in some sports.)

Is there any way we can get a “Turnpike Trophy” with Lafayette?

I spent a few minutes at a local high school match with the Harvard coach a couple years ago.
She made it very clear in as positive a way as possible that there were no Massachusetts recruits worth pursuing.

Don’t think we have too many D1 players either.

We have a few in NJ, but nothing like the numbers you find out west (esp. California).

Not only has Holy Cross been consistently at or near the bottom of the PL in overall won lost percentage, it has been the same story with the Worcester Cup or whatever they call the rankings of the Worcester area colleges annual overall won lost percentage. It's a systemic issue of being on the fringes of D-1 in resources and student population yet being near the top in number of sports played. Perhaps it's by the luck of the draw, but some things are looking up since MB arrived. He's not "Mack the Knife" but he has been willing to move on from coaches and try to do better. I'm impressed with the WBB and Men's Lax coaching hires. The rapid MBB player turnover last year was ham handed to me, but the team is peaking at the right time this year and I'm rooting for a tournament run like everyone else. And then comes football. Almost too good to be true that we have two seasons of football to enjoy in 2021.
