I'd love to see Austin (and Matt do, if he is going this route) end up with a winning program that gives him a legit shot to play in the postseason. If he was going to go Major, I'd love to see him in a Gonzaga uniform. Another team (not Major) would be Vermont. Just my own thoughts; not saying he would fit in perfectly at either program. With all due respect to the Catamounts, if I’ve wrapped up my HC career, and am looking to do a Grad-transfer year someplace, UVM would be near the bottom of my list. (Unless I’m looking for a Master’s in smoking weed.)

If Becker saw AB as a talented starter and difference maker for him next year AND had an extra schollie now, that would be a starting point for a one-year UVM grad schollie discussion. Not sure that is the case on either front at UVM. (Not even sure if they do basketball grad transfers at all.) But I think that the AE or a similar level might have a team that sees (or will see) AB as a player who meets their needs.

Every coach wants star players but sometimes coaches look at less heralded players and come to the conclusion that they have a better chance of winning when that payer is on the floor than when they're not. Usually it's because the unheralded player is willing to do unheralded things: box out, take a charge, bend his knees on defense, fight through picks, keep the ball moving on offense, hit the open shot, and play with an edge. I give you AB.

I suspect there will be some coaches at higher levels who value what AB would bring to the table in terms of leadership and intensity. I do think this year will be tougher given some of the issues with current Seniors staying an extra year but, if a team is sitting on an extra scholarship in the Spring, a one year guy like Austin who can bring something different to your team can make a lot of sense.

But I'm in no position in life to be judgemental in that arena. How about a Rice or Northwestern?

I know little about UVM undergrad life, but some of their grad schools have a solid reputation. And if you do not mind the cold, Burlington is a fine small city, especially if you like to ski.

Nate Sestina went from Patriot League All-Conference Second team to playing a meaningful role at the #1 basketball program in the country. I'm not suggesting that AB is a Sestina clone or that he'll end up in the SEC or ACC, but I also don't think he needs to aspire to play at Fairleigh Dickinson or St Frances PA either.

It would seem that the first decision AB needs to make is whether he wants to try and be a complimentary role player at a bigger program or a main cog in a lower level league.

Perhaps his first decision is what degree he wants to pursue...then to choose what schools he would like to attend to pursue that goal.

I suspect Austin will want to play somewhere his family can see him play in person and where he has a decent chance to get to the Dance.

Austin came up on the William & Mary board as a potential grad transfer for next year.

Agree Wonder if Richmond would have any interest. A quick look at Richmond’s roster shows they have 4 grad students this year, all of whom were undergraduates at Richmond. That’s interesting. I think they are all, at least theoretically, able to return. If I understand the new pandemic rule.

I know this is sneaky to put here - but the 'other' Austin 'Masel' made a 'top 10 espn play' today - robbed a UVA batter of a home run in right field yesterday and indeed it was on the 'top 10' this morning - he and Rinaldi are regulars in Richmond's lineup this season.

Doubt this will have any bearing on Austin’s future school. The William and Mary interest is his level.

^ Extremely doubtful. There is nothing in common with the Conn of when RJ was there and now other than the name of the school.

George Blaney is close to his former Seton Hall player, Danny Hurley. Though I do not think Hurley would have interest in Austin.
