Congratulations on the new dog house. UConn still has the Civic Center available which may mollify the seat counters in Wakefield, MA. HC has the DCU available...post Covid.

If only EB Williams had owned the Caps instead of the Orioles, maybe, just maybe....

Merrimack's rink is smaller, about 2,500.
$68 million is a lot for a rink that size. Colgate's new rink, only several years old, seats 2,300 and cost under $40 million.

But Hockey East capacity restrictions?? UConn men are playing the vast majority of their games in Hartford during "normal" times and thus is a women's rink and a men's practice facility.

I read somewhere that UConn is anticipating splitting their home games between the new facility and the XL in Hartford

"When UConn joined Hockey East in 2013, it promised to build an on-campus rink within four years since Freitas Ice Forum doesn’t meet the conference’s requirements for men’s hockey, though Hockey East eventually backed off of that timeframe. In September 2018, the UConn Board of Trustees approved a plan to build a new 2,500-seat arena with 500 seat-backs in Storrs with the option to expand to 3,500 seats if necessary. Though Hockey East requires arenas to hold at least 4,000, UConn received a waiver for the project since the expectation is for the Huskies’ men’s hockey program to continue to play most of its games at the XL Center in Hartford." www.theuconnblog.com/2020/9/22/21450996/uconn-huskies-mens-hockey-new-arena-to-hold-2700-fans-construction-slated-to-begin-in-april-2021

Don't kid yourself. No school spends $68 million on a practice rink.

Don't kid yourself. No school spends $68 million on a practice rink. Unimpeachable logic. However the XL Center is owned by the City of Hartford with significant backing from the State I am sure. UConn is a State University, so do the math there. If HC plays Uconn in men's hockey it will probably be in the new arena.

They finished 4th this year and have advanced to the semis of the league tournament. Not bad for having only been at this level a relatively short while.

UConn men have NEVER played in the Semis (at the time of this posting) and this is ONLY the second time they have made the quarterfinals....The women have been in the conference alot longer though so they have been.

Very vague as to whether the men’s team will play any/any HE games at the new barn.
“The new arena will host all games of the UConn Women’s Ice Hockey team – which has been a Hockey East member since the 2002-03 season – and will be home to the men’s team, which has played at the XL Center in Hartford.”

Guess the 4,000 seat on campus rink requirement has been changed by Hockey East.
Seems a pretty steep price of $70 million for a 2,600 seat rink.
Major athletic projects now underway at Sacred Heart ( Ice Rink) Fairfield (Convocation Center) and UConn (Ice Rink).

Major athletic projects now underway at Sacred Heart ( Ice Rink) Fairfield (Convocation Center) and UConn (Ice Rink). The whole thing seems strange. If UConn is making that kind of investment, why wouldn’t they find a way to make it 4000 seats or at least closer? Not only because of the HE requirement but a serious hockey school should have more than 2600 seats. And there’s still no clarity on whether they will, in fact, be allowed to play HE games there. If they can’t, seems like our tax dollars could have been put to better use.

Edsall extension and now this boondoggle. Memo from the state to you 92 and the rest of the CT taxpayers: assume the position.

The money isn't really coming from the state anyways...here is the way they are funding it.

The AP story confirms that the men will play in both Storrs and Hartford but doesn't offer details about whether any league games will be played on campus--although it appears it is allowed. apnews.com/article/hockey-business-education-sports-5e8eca9fc9208a59f57cf9a32a943f97I would be inclined to get season tickets to games in Storrs if I got a lot of HE games. A loud on campus hockey game in a modern facility could be a lot of fun. I am shocked that the UConn Foundation says it can raise $20 million for this rink. In five of the past six years their total contributions received have been between $32 million and $41 million. But, it only takes a couple of mega gifts (or one if you know the Luths) to make this happen.

Tony Rizza, a former soccer player, gave $8 million of that. I am not suggesting that the Foundation is BSing us. I just am amazed that they could do this well for hockey
