The Hart Center rink has been half full (750) for one game this season, vs #2 Quinnipiac and a third full for another game and less than a third full for all the other contests. I believe the concept that the existing rink is a drag on recruiting in comparison to new buildings at some schools, but visiting teams aren't refusing to play there, the Board of health isn't threatening to condemn the building and we have the DCU downtown if the Hart starts selling out, so if TPTB want to review studies and think long and hard about spending what it would cost for a new arena while hoping for an Angel Benefactor to emerge, I understand.
The DCU Center is a mile away from the HC campus, same distance as the new SHU arena is from their main campus. If an equivalent to the Martire Family doesn't materialize for HC, would the school borrow to build a new hockey arena or invade the endowment? Either way tuition would have to be increased to pay for it, either to cover amortization of a loan/bond or to replace reduced payouts from a smaller endowment.

We’re not building a new arena or materially improving the current one without a substantial amount of the money being donated for that purpose. That said, the notion that one of the most expensive schools in the country would “have to” raise tuition to pay for anything seems silly. We have over 900 kids in the freshman class. Tuition and room/board is approaching $80K per year. We have money. It’s a matter of how we want to spend it. New/improved housing on campus for students is probably the biggest need. Maybe improvements to the dining experience as that is God-awful right now.

The key for SHU is moving leagues. The difference in the size of the crowd for their opening game against BC vs what they will draw this weekend against us will be stark. The Hart Center was full for an exhibition game against BC, but barely gets 250 people for the likes of Mercyhurst, RIT and the rest of the motley crew of Atlantic Hockey foes. SHU will have the same problem as the novelty of the new arena wears off.
Easy Street dorms, new dining options and frankly Hogan could use some updating should rank as higher priorities for the school. If and when there comes a time to build a brand new arena, it should be a smaller scale version of the Conte Forum where both Basketball and Hockey can play. In the interim, making an investment to improve the facilities under the stands where both the M/W team could have expanded locker rooms and a shared meeting / video / kitchenette area would improve the student athlete experience and help in recruiting. Donations will be key, but hopefully shouldn’t break the bank.

Didn’t we expand and upgrade the locker rooms in the last 5-10 years? I know they’re still not great but I would have thought we would have used all the available space when we did that work. Is there still room to expand down there?

SHU’s women’s team beat Harvard 2-1 in OT on Sunday - despite being outshot by 30 shots on goal

Is there still room to expand down there? Last time I was in the locker room was for the Duke Brady dedication of the video / meeting room. Better paint job, new carpet and locker stalls, but the same exact footprint as 30+ years ago when I was there.

The Women’s locker room is new with the last upgrade to the Hart Center.
Next on the list for major athletic projects will be the new softball complex and Smith Stadium renovations, unless a significant gift is received specifically for the rink. There are plans in discussion for the rink with several iterations regarding what can be done based on latest cost estimates.
Time to buy a Poweball ticket. 😊

There is only one thing that moves the needle here.
WHALE donor: "here's 25 million for hockey."
HC: " that is so generous. The money will help hockey and other 'needs.'''
WHALE: "All to hockey or you get zero."

Since you're from New Hampshire, this post gave me a flashback to the big Neon whale on the sign at the former Yoken's restaurant in Portsmouth with the phrase "Thar She Blows!"🙂

If and when there comes a time to build a brand new arena, it should be a smaller scale version of the Conte Forum where both Basketball and Hockey can play. Pure wishful thinking, of course.... But might as well go whole hog, remove the Hart Center gym and put a new "multi" one in its place. Hockey rink stays as is for practice, you have the Blaney Gym for hoop practice. Play hoop somewhere else for a year or two (as bad as the team is now, wouldn't even need to be the DCU for every game). Might need as many whales as have recently washed up on the Jersey Shore to make it happen, however.

Just announced this week a new $175 million dollar combined facility similar to Conte, that will seat 5,000. The facility will have a separate ice practice sheet. Their “Whale” , the Andersons, is donating $75 million dollars.
