I can't believe that I was rooting for Oral Roberts but I was. A #15 seed taking down a #2. Great game.

I had no problem rooting for ORU - 82 pct ft team for the year - that's what won the game for them - love the tourney!

I think everyone outside of Ohio was rooting for ORU. Except my third son who picked the Buckeyes to win it all. He’s not in a good place.

They started in D1 in 1970. They were one of those places like Jacksonville that no one had ever heard of that had a lot of success their first few years; no doubt aided by the southern and southwestern big schools not yet fully recruiting Black players. Made the Elite 8 in 1974 then kind of fell off the map.
In 1971-2 I saw them play Harvard (they came to Boston and played BU as well). Spectacular game, something like 100-99; up-and-down action with no shot clock or 3 point line needed
And that was Harvard's brief foray into trying to build a respectable basketball program, something they've of course revived under Amaker. Star player was James Brown, the Fox sportscaster. Also Ken Wolfe, long time MNF producer. Talented team with a terrible coach that never could put it together in the Ivy League.

My favorite story about ORU was when a player twisted his ankle and was taken to the locker room. It is said that Oral Roberts himself went and laid hands on the player praying ghat he be healed.

Alabama up by 1 on Iona at half.
Let's Go Gaels!
Freshman and a walk on are playing great versus the Crimson Tide.
Can Pitino shock the world?

ORU's big star was Richie Fuqua who was a threat to shoot as soon as he crossed the midcourt line--jump shots from anywhere in his half of the court. I believe he was drafted by the Celtics but did not make it in the NBA. Looking up his stats: one year he average 35+ field goal attempts per game

At that game I mentioned, Fuqua let it fly from what would now be well beyond the arc on a couple of 3 on 1s. Couldn't believe it and he made at least one of them.

Abmas, one of The ORU's two stars and the nation's scoring leader, went to Jesuit Dallas HS and had only 4 offers; two of which were from Army and Navy. And they knocked off #7 seed Florida last night. And he's only a sophomore, majoring in biomedical chemistry!
