Magarity is going to have the most PL coaching seniority pretty soon.

He could have survived one bad year - but his record over the previous four seasons was 35-87. So that makes it 35-100 over less than five seasons. And they were 12-48 in their first two years in the PL so it's not a new problem.

Magarity is going to have the most PL coaching seniority pretty soon. At the rate it's going, she might get into 2nd place. But 1st place is out of reach until Sue Troyan decides to retire at Lehigh. She has been head coach for 26 seasons and has absolute job security - made doubly secure by her husband being their very successful softball coach. And she is in her early 50's, so she may be there for a long time in the future.

Magarity went 7-7 in the regular season with a team picked to finish ninth. She went 6-3 against teams not named BU. She inherited a team with one senior and 56% of the minutes were played by Frosh and Sophs. Seems like a pretty good first season to me. Hopefully she can continue to build on that. No one except you cares what her record was in her last two seasons at UNH which is a very challenging place to win in basketball for a number of reasons. They were terrible before she got there and will be terrible now that she’s gone.

Bravo, great hire HC

I agree that it is indeed a good hire. I look forward to seeing how the players and team continue to develop next season. I must confess that I am not sure how Loyola deciding to change coaches has any bearing on Holy Cross.

I must con fess that I am not sure how Loyola deciding to change coaches has any bearing on Holy Cross. Uh, everything has a bearing on Holy Cross. Think six degrees of separation Kevin Bacon. Initially, when comparing the career won/loss records of Magarity and Mcinerney (sounds like an Irish Law Firm on the fourth floor of any pre-war building in downtown Worcester) I was concerned. I'm from the Bill Parcels school of thought "You are what your record says you are" but he was referring to the NFL where all 32 teams have the same salary cap. There's a ton more variables in college BB. Combined with all the Hallmark Father Daughter moments and keeping Avery in purple for her last two years, I am a Coach Magarity supporter and looking forward to next season.

I think Magarity is a very good coach hire.
HC had their best team in a decade the year before. Missing all of that talent going into the first year is tough.
Trying to win in basketball at UNH is almost impossible. She had a 26-6 year!
Look at the men's never even made the NCAA

It's more a function of disliking the way the previous regime (Billy's more than AM's) ended than it is for most people that knock Magarity.
I'm not one of those people but I can understand it.

Bravo, great hire HC MM was certainly a curious hire, not everyone, myself included was overwhelmed by it, time will tell if she is a good one. I think most would agree that the team exceeded expectations. I thought they had a very good chance of not winning a game. They were a better team at the end of the season than at the start. I think she did a great job integrating the Frosh class into the program, especially since her first face to face with the kids wasn't until August/September? it looks like that class was very good - thanks BG & AM. I am also particularly impressed by her first 5 recruits. Having watched several of the 3 incoming frosh's games this season, I believe all 3 have an opportunity to contribute meaningful mins.

I consider it very unlikely that any of our players will be around for a 5th year, Avery is on track to graduate next year, maybe Demski, depending on how next season goes, but my impression is they are all moving on.

I was referring to Coach Magarity's accomplishment of retaining Avery for her final two years after the coaching change. It's an accomplishment to keep everyone else, too. But Avery would have had an easy path to transfer if she wanted to like so many on the men's side did.
I agree the concept of a BB player staying for a fifth year at HC makes little sense today. It worked beautifully for Jimmy Murray in FB as he improved his game and got to the NFL. But FB only requires adjusting one semester of studies. For a BB player a grad transfer or starting your career makes more sense.

I'd have to agree with HC13 that MM's hire at the time was more along the lines of a head scratcher than a slam dunk. I believe she was heading into the final year of her contract at UNH on the outside looking in at an extension after back to back dismal seasons. In WBB - and I suppose collegiate coaching in general - the hardest part of rebuilding a program is usually getting enough good players in to have a "breakthrough" season and then continuing to build off that success on the recruiting trail which snowballs to more continued success on the court.
My concern was she had that breakthrough in 16-17, solid year in 17-18, and then proceeded to fall off a cliff winning 13 games against D1 opponents over her next two seasons. Not your typical path to a "better job" especially given the candidate pool she was up against. IMO the hire reflects an AD that doesn't really know what he's doing when evaluating leaders for his programs.

I agree she did a great job in keeping everyone, including the then incoming frosh committed. I'd love someday to have a chat w/Davis, Allen & McCormack who were effectively recruited 3 times - these 3 committed early to BG, then re-recruited by Am & MM. Remarkable not one of them bailed. BPC was a late commit to AM, so her process not quite as unusual.

an 'accomplishment' to retain players at HC ? that's a crazy statement - are you suggesting other D.1 schools are regularly raiding low-mid major rosters when there's a coaching change ? can you give me some examples ? We have had very few outbound transfers through the years - for 90 pct of our players, a full scholarship at HC is not something to walk away from. I hear it's a good school and students seem to like it

Was Magarity the best coach that HC could hire? Maybe, maybe not. But she has experience and has shown she can direct a program. She's had some ups and downs for sure but I am inclined to give her a break and a chance. Just like a player can improve over time, so can coaches. And I am sure she has learned and grown from her time at UNH. And I don't want to get too much into personal matters, but I think MM may have been enduring some challenges in life (as we all do) off the court the last few seasons. Those kind of stresses can be a impactful. She's leading HC now and I am inclined to give her the chance to prove the ADs decision is a good one; I suspect it is. But I am also not inclined to give her credit for players sticking around during the changeover. Patriot league wbb players rarely transfer in that circumstance. Most recently, Bucknell changed coaches and I don't think they lost any players. Navy too. There's also a limited amount of places a player in the PL could land for a scholarship mid-career. It's an exception for the PL on the women's side in my view.....that's a another discussion for another day.

Hmm, do I think it would have been unusual for a 18 yr old kid with no connection to the school look at what was going on maybe have second thoughts about getting involved in the dumpster fire that was going - nope. I'm sure AL & OE would have landed softly they bailed, perhaps some of the others, not so much.

Do I think it would be unusual for student-athletes in wbb programs across the country to have the thought of leaving their school/program? No, I don't. And I would guess that there are a few players on every team across the country that think about it WEEKLY, all season long. Look at the transfer portal....I think it's over 900 D-1 players. That's just the way it is now. But I do think in the PL, it's just very rare.

I don't disagree - it is rare in the PL. The last player to transfer from HC that I can recall was Jen Dynis and that was a while ago. But these kids experience more than the typical turmoil I think

In last three years, coaching changes at: Bucknell Navy Loyola HC (twice) Boston University Army
That's a ton and it's still March. There may be other changes coming. Only one I could see staying put for sure is Troyan at Lehigh (aside from ones hired this year).
A reflection that the league is a leaping point for many coaches who want a bigger program and/or more $; and also that in this era of coaching, careers walk a tight rope in wbb.
