Jacked:
The new Video Scoreboard that will be installed within the next month at Fitton, will be first of many (possibly 7) if all venues, Baseball, Softball, Tennis, Basketball, Hockey, Soccer and Lacrosse that will be upgraded over the next five years according to the new Five Year Athletics Strategic Plan released last week. Track and Field / Field Hockey may also be upgraded, but they along with Swimming have been replaced within the last couple of years.
There will be quite a few phone calls and zoom sessions between Worcester and Brookings over the next several years.

If baseball gets a board, softball will as well. The 'problem' with field hockey and the running track is the lack of a camera platform(s) I think Fr. K. field will be the first to be upgraded; that field gets a lot of use, The stands are too small, no concessions or restrooms. ___________ SDSU's new (in 2016) stadium cost $65 million, probably built with non-union labor, and in a state where construction costs less than it does in Massachusetts.

SD is mostly non-union labor, I know there are a couple unions but not many. Cost of living is very reasonable, no state income tax and such things can be less costly to live out here...but then you have to deal with the weather. Massachusetts can have rough winters too but I think that’s for us South Dakotans weather is probably our biggest negative.

Great to get such insights into life in SD. Good that you enjoy it, but I cannot picture myself there on a permanent basis. There are many places in SD I would visit again, but you are right about the winters.

Great to get such insights into life in SD. Good that you enjoy it, but I cannot picture myself there on a permanent basis. There are many places in SD I would visit again, but you are right about the winters. The weather on the west side of the state is much like Denver weather and quite unlike the weather in eastern South Dakota. Like Denver, the Rapid City area can get a lot of snow in April (very infrequent) but it can also hit 60 nd 70 degrees in January (not as infrequent). The Black Hills of South Dakota are outstanding. I live on the eastern edge of the State, an hour north of Brookings, but have family in Rapid City. On the topic of the new Daktronics board at Fitton Field: Daktronics has just a few competitors for large video displays at sports venues. I think Daktronics is universally recognized as the industry leader. You'll be impressed with the product and everything the board can do during a football game. Brookings is the home of South Dakota State and Daktronics. SDSU's scoreboard LED display is listed at 3,100 square ft and I believe it is the second largest in FCS (behind Tennessee State). The new board at Fitton Field is listed as a 900-square ft display. 900-square feet is also a very large video display that will be impressive -- wait until you see the television-quality display that is bright enough to be viewed at mid-day from every seat including those very close to the board itself.

For perspective, the size of a standard billboard such as you see along highways is 672 square feet

I think the dimensions are 18.75’ x 48’.
Or 16 yards long. Seems pretty big.

The standard large size billboards, or bulletins as they are officially called in the biz are 14' x 48'.

Clearly the "Dak" in Daktonics stands for Dakota. As Johnny Carson used to say, "I did not know that".

While watching the baseball game on Wednesday afternoon, between HC and Bryant, I noticed that the old scoreboard has been removed from the support beams in the football stadium.
Good sign that the replacement process and the installation of the new video board is now underway.

Aren’t we the 16 seed. No home games until the Fall Road Warriors!

That looks pretty straightforward. I’m available to install a few sections on Saturday if needed - as long as I get to ride on the scissor-lift.

View AttachmentThe “Go Cross Go” sign will be reinstalled on the back side of the new scoreboard to cushion possible impact. Will be very happy to see it in full operation. Wonder for non game events if the netting and the goal post will be removed as to not obscure the video board in operation?

All of the video panels for the new scoreboard are now in place. Also Fitton Field sign has been added on top, as seen in the announcement. Had a chance to see it from the back while watching the baseball games this afternoon.

There appeared a few people in the stands along first base side. If so, it is extremely limited. I was watching on ESPN+

There appeared a few people in the stands along first base side. If so, it is extremely limited. I was watching on ESPN+ I tried to get in but they said only parents and students. There was about 25 people there at most. It's just frustrating. Let the fans in. How many is there anyway? With the state lifting capacity restrictions, HC doesn't need to be over cautious anymore. Finally ok weather and the fans still can't go. The stadium is massive! Empty seats everywhere. I am just frustrated. There is no science behind the decision by the school. If you want to make the masks a mandate fine, if you want to show vaccine identification fine. Why did we get the shots, so we can do things again. Yet we still can't. They are leaving this stadium open to players parents from both teams that live across the country. The students going, give me a break. On a normal year 100 people max.

Does Daktronics send its own crew from SD to install these boards? Not absolutely certain of this response: Yes, Daktronics sends a crew but I think they also pick up local electricians to complete the install. The board will have been tested before shipping to location for assembly. Please post a picture when the install is complete.

It is to be used during commencement in about three weeks, so there will be photos. I'll post a link to the commencement livestream.
