Awful lot of action in the PL this year - although his record wasn't very good, actually though he had them going in the right direction the last couple of years, were lineup to be decent this past season until the injuries sank the season

I wonder if the AD expects the women’s program to mirror the success the men have experienced - 19-11 record in 2019-20 was impressive - I wonder if Cleary was the one who wanted to move on now

Wouldn't surprise me to see the men's coach move on this year or next. This clearly was not the choice of the women's coach.

That article puts things in perspective. Thanks Old School. If any coach deserved a Covid Mulligan season it would seem Cleary deserved it. He steered the program to it's second winning season in 33 years in his fourth campaign, right on schedule and then lost four starters before the first game and had to cancel the season after nine games due to injuries. I would guess he will receive the majority of his contract.
Fortunately for Coach Cleary he is male with experience coaching WBB so he has the universe of both WBB and MBB programs to apply for jobs in. Somewhat surprising with all the progress in gender equity in society and especially in academia, women coaches, for most intents and purposes only have the universe of WBB to apply for jobs in.
I suspect this imbalance may be rectified over time not by large numbers of women integrating MBB, but with less men coaching WBB. But that's just a guess.

The Colgate AD may have factored in that his winning season last year was primarily due to all of his predecessor’s recruits. But they all graduated last season and the current talent level is not as high. 2. It is likely that his contract ran out with this season. I think it is at least remotely possible that Colgate may have offered to give him a one-year extension to make up for this Covid year but that he declined. 3. A college WBB is not going to switch over to being a MBB coach, regardless of the gender of the coach. Clary will likely end up as a D2 or D3 coach. He was successful at Bloomsburg prior to this job. 4. Cleary was hired by former AD Vicky Chun. Colgate’s new A.D. is a product of two P5 programs. It wouldn’t surprise me if she hires a P5 assistant coach to take over the Colgate job.

Of course it doesn't say how many years the extension was for but I assumed it was a multi-year extension. Maybe it was a one year extension to see how he would do with only his own recruits. Still it was a snake bitten season for Colgate.

Cleary had three years left on his contract. AD and associate have a background in track & field. P5 or no, they are new to these decisions. Very tough for a women's coach to move to men's but it would be cool if it could happen. Like if Dawn Staley took over UNC men's or something similar. Cleary will be challenged to land his next coaching job no matter the level. Being male won't help him.

Also, Tennessee asked Pat Summit on multiple occasions during her HOF career in Knoxville if she’d be interested in coaching the men’s team. And she turned them down every time. Her reported reasoning? “I wouldn’t want people to think I looked at the men’s game as a step up.”

Well being male is probably the worst thing he has going for him now a days. He probably has enough connections to land an assistant coaching position within women's basketball. Good luck if he gets hired again as a head coach. I'm not going to say it won't happen but its a tough job market for males on the women's side. Most AD's will do everything possible to hire a female. The coaching landscape is much different today than when Geno and BG broke in. As far as moving over to a men's position that never happens unless he has big time connections. He won't ever be hired as a men's head coach right now because AD's will look for experience coaching men. Men's & Women's basketball are viewed as two completely separate sports. Unless he lands an assistant position in WBB most likely he will be forced to find another career.

I was stunned to find out he his only around 44/45 years old based on his college graduation year.

I was on a committee to hire a head girls basketball coach in Central Mass 5 years ago...we'd have been thrilled to talk to/hire a woman; there weren't any close to having the qualifications. I'm sure college ball is the same way; women have an advantage but there aren't a lot of them.
The league we're in has 3 women coaches out of 12; ironically, two of them are HC grads. And one woman is the head coach of a boys team; as is Judson Martindale's mom in another league.

Good info on Cleary's men's coaching experience. I believe though, that once you cross over to the women's side, the door back to the men's side closes behind you.
