Meanwhile, statistics cited in multiple sources this week, notably including by Mitch McConnell, indicate that 97% of the Americans currently hospitalized with COVID come from the ranks of the unvaccinated. That's a very good indication that even in those breakthrough cases, the vaccine is limiting the worst outcomes and limiting the symptoms (if any) to the more manageable set. .
Didn't they say from the get-go that these vaccines effectiveness rates were about not getting hospitalized and dying? Didn't Aaron Judge test positive but have zero symptoms? Yes that was a breakthrough case, but not one that I really care about. Life would be better if the disease were eradicated. In the meantime, we need to focus on areas where emergency rooms are being overrun. I'm lucky to be in MA, where cases are rising, but hospitals are able to keep up with the demand "San Francisco" by Scott McKenzie - If you go to San Francisco ,you'll wear a flower in your hair" should be changed to "Massachussetts" - "If you go to Mass-a-chu-ssetts, you'll wear a flower in your hair." Eh!

Both songs (Bee Gees/Mass and Scott McKenzie/SF) released in the same year. Bee Gees harmony should be the state song, given how sucky the state song is.

Well there's always the state folk song by a native Massachusetts person (even if he did have some issues with local law enforcement)

It'd be like the famous song, Route 66; in that most of 128 exists under different numbers these days.

Well there's always the state folk song by a native Massachusetts person (even if he did have some issues with local law enforcement) Beautiful. First time I went to the Berkshires as a young adult I said "Wow, how long has this been here in Massachusetts?" Eternity I guess but I didn't know first hand.

Maybe not eternity but at least since 1945. While I wasn't there, I'm told my parents, after getting married in Worcester (courtesy Fr. Hart), reportedly honeymooned in the Berkshires. This pre-dated Brownie cameras (anyone remember them?), so no pictures to document their stay.

The Washington Post has an interactive graphic which calculates and displays the number of COVID cases in the unvaccinated population, and compares that to the total number of cases in the total population earlier this year. In Massachusetts, the adjusted case rate per 100,000 for unvaccinated individuals on July 17 was similar to the case rate for all residents on May 21. "Bubba" and "Billy Joe" are stubborn, but not crazy. They'll be getting to a vaccination site PDQ, imo.

Three quarters of new COVID-19 cases in Singapore are among vaccinated people
Jul. 23, 2021 7:20 AM ETBNTX, MRNA...By: Dulan Lokuwithana, SA News Editor3 Comments 3d illustration of the coronavirus vaccine. Covid-19 corona virus vaccination. K_E_N/iStock via Getty Images Singapore one of the leading countries in the global immunization drive against the coronavirus has recorded as many as three-quarters of new COVID-19 infections among people who were inoculated, Reuters reported citing data from the country’s health ministry. Over the past 28-day period, Singapore has reported 1,096 locally transmitted cases out of which 484, or 44%, were among fully vaccinated people. The partially vaccinated individuals contributed to 30% of cases, while the remainder were unvaccinated. Among the seven hospital admissions due to COVID-19, only one person with partial immunization had required oxygen support along with six of the unvaccinated patients. Having inoculated approximately 75% of its 5.7M population, including half of the populace fully vaccinated, the city-state has become the second in the global vaccination drive, according to a Reuters tracker. Commenting on the data, Teo Yik Ying, dean of the Saw Swee Hock School of Public Health at the National University of Singapore (NUS) said: "As more and more people are vaccinated in Singapore, we will see more infections happening amongst vaccinated people." "It is important to always compare it against the proportion of people who remain unvaccinated.... Suppose Singapore achieves a rate of 100% fully vaccinated... then all infections will stem from the vaccinated people and none from the unvaccinated." According to the data over the past 14 days, the infections were nearly 88% higher among the vaccinated people over 61 years, compared to those in the younger age group. Singapore has used Pfizer (NYSE:PFE)/ BioNTech (NASDAQ:BNTX) and Moderna (NASDAQ:MRNA) COVID-19 shots in its immunization drive. Recording 162 new locally transmitted infections on Thursday, the country’s new COVID-19 cases have reached an 11-month high, prompting authorities to tighten the pandemic-related social restrictions. What I've been saying- vaccinated people (like 99% of our posters, I would think) don't get nearly as sick and life should go on for them.

Pfizer Halts Severe Delta Cases; Olympics Ceremony: Virus Update By Bloomberg News | July 23, 2021 8:11AM ET Pfizer Inc. and BioNTech SE’s Covid-19 vaccine provided a strong shield against hospitalizations and more severe disease in cases caused by the delta variant in Israel, even though it was just 39% effective in preventing infections.
Earlier, Japan’s Olympics organizers reported a record number of new daily coronavirus infections linked to the games, bringing the total to 110.
U.K. Shows Signs of Slowing (4:30 p.m. HK) Britain’s economy showed signs of slowing in July as euphoria following the easing of restrictions faded and a resurgence of the coronavirus caused widespread staff shortages.
The government is rolling out daily testing to allow workers in supermarket depots and food manufacturers to avoid self-isolation.
Europe’s Recovery Threatened (3:30 p.m. HK) Businesses in France and Germany reported solid growth in July, but warned that shortages of raw materials, delivery delays and rising costs threaten the outlook. The rapid reopening of economies from lockdowns has led to surging demand for raw materials, leading to shortages across multiple industries.
Taiwan Eases Restrictions (3:07 p.m. HK) Taiwan will allow kindergartens, wedding-banquet halls and bowling alleys to reopen, starting next week, as part of a cautious easing of restrictions. Tourist attractions, religious venues and cram schools will also be able to welcome back visitors.
The number of new daily cases has fallen steadily since reaching a peak in May, with Taiwan reporting 23 new infections Friday. Earlier, Taiwan Premier Su Tseng-chang approved a proposal to downgrade the Covid-19 alert to level 2 from level 3.
Pfizer Shot Halts Severe Delta Cases in Israel (1:17 p.m. HK) Pfizer-BioNTech’s vaccine provided 88% protection against hospitalization and 91.4% against severe illness caused by the delta variant in Israel, according to a report from the health ministry, which studied an unspecified number of people between June 20 and July 17.
The shot was just 39% effective in preventing infections. The report said that the data could be skewed because of different ways of testing vaccinated groups of people versus those who hadn’t been inoculated.
Ho Chi Minh City Toughens Curbs (1:10 p.m. HK) Vietnam’s commercial hub of Ho Chi Minh City is further tightening curbs and will more strongly implement its stay-home order amid an aggressive virus outbreak. The city’s local infections exceeded 40,000 as of Friday morning since its 15-day stay-home order began on July 9, according to data from the health ministry.
Philippines Reimposes Curbs (1:06 p.m. HK) The Philippines has reimposed some restrictions in Manila, including barring children ages 5 and above outdoors anew, after it confirmed local transmission of the delta variant. The capital region, which accounts for about a third of the nation’s economy, will remain under general community quarantine but with heightened restrictions until July 31.
Singapore to Delay Celebrations (10:36 a.m. HK) Singapore will postpone its independence day celebrations to August 21 from August 9 to curb a resurgent spread of Covid-19. The city-state tightened restrictions earlier this week for a month following the emergence of virus clusters linked to a fishery port and karaoke nightclubs.
NZ Suspends Australia Travel Bubble (10:11 a.m. HK) New Zealand suspended its quarantine-free travel bubble with Australia for at least the next eight weeks, starting 11:59 p.m. local time Friday. The decision followed health advice on the growing number of cases across Australia.
“This is not a decision we have taken lightly, but it is the right decision to keep New Zealanders safe,” Prime Minister Jacinda Ardern said.
Jacinda Ardern announces the quarantine free travel arrangement with Australia suspension in Auckland, on July 23.
Signs of China Outbreak Spread (9:49 a.m. HK) China reported 12 new confirmed cases and 10 asymptomatic infections, amid signs that a fresh outbreak at the airport in the eastern Chinese city of Nanjing has quietly spread to other provinces.
Northeastern province Liaoning, eastern province Anhui and southern province Guangdong have each reported one asymptomatic infection related to the Nanjing cluster. The city of Nanjing reported 12 confirmed cases and 7 asymptomatic infections on Friday. Authorities have expanded Covid testing to all of the city’s over 9 million residents.

Thailand Has Record Cases (9:22 a.m. HK) Thailand reported 14,575 new infections on Friday, the highest single-day increase since the pandemic began. Despite the surge in virus cases, the nation’s tourist hotspots including Koh Phi Phi and Khao Lak will reopen from Aug. 1 to vaccinated foreign tourists. The expanded opening program will allow vaccinated travelers to skip quarantine.
Seoul Restrictions Extended (8:00 a.m. HK) South Korea will extend current social distancing steps that ban gatherings of three or more people after 6 p.m. in the greater Seoul area for another two weeks, as the number of cases continue to surge.

Easing the U.K. ‘Pingdemic’ (7:01 a.m. HK) Scientists at the University of Oxford found little difference in the number of symptomatic infections when those in contact with cases had daily tests rather than self-isolating.
The results could fuel calls for the U.K. government to rethink its containment strategy, which has seen more than 1.7 million people holing up as of this week in what’s been dubbed the “pingdemic.”
Longer Pfizer Doses Gap Boosts Antibodies (7:01 a.m. HK) An interval of eight to 10 weeks between doses of the vaccine developed by Pfizer and BioNTech boosts its effectiveness compared with a shorter interval, a U.K. study found.
“Eight weeks is probably the sweet spot,” in terms of the trade-off between getting as many people fully vaccinated as quickly as possible and allowing the population to produce higher antibody levels, professor Susanna Dunachie, the study lead from the University of Oxford, said at a briefing Thursday

As much as I've been trying to avoid this thread, it is like not being able to avoid looking at a traffic accident as you drive by. Like the rest of the country and Crossports too, this subject is very polarizing and I think I suggested 8 +/- pages ago that this thread should die but, like a cat with 9 lives it just keeps going and going. So, my contribution is an article I just read that might come close to some middling ground that many posters might agree with (hope springs eternal! ): slate.com/technology/2021/07/covid-delta-variant-risk-vaccinated-breakthrough-cases.html

www.washingtonpost.com/politics/2021/07/23/alabama-kay-ivey-unvaccinated-covid/Re: sader1970's referenced article on a writer's trip to Florida to visit family. I am supposed to go to a bar mitzvah in Florida in early September. I may not go, given that Florida currently has 20 percent of the new COVID cases in the U.S., and has a governor and legislature who eschew requiring vaccinations, etc. Seven day rolling average of new cases per 100,000 has Florida in second place at 41 per 100,000. behind Louisiana, ahead of Missouri and Arkansas. MA is at 6 (most are in Barnstable County) NH at 2, VT at 3, CT at 6, RI at 6. ------------- Edited to add current COVID hospitalized rate per 100,000. Florida 27, 3rd highest in U.S. Massachusetts 2, tied with NH for 49th highest. (VT is lower)

But why roll the dice and crap out? The consequences are life altering.....
Covid prevention requires adjustments and running new options,....just like the wishbone or veer offense when adversity is directly in front of you.
