With the Delta Variant Surge, will Holy Cross and other PL schools require proof of vaccination to attend events on campus this fall? It is an issue that must be addressed and stated regarding policy within the next three weeks. Has anyone seen a statement from a school regarding attendance at their home games for the 2021 season? Outdoors or indoors? Big difference. Should be consistent. Vaccinated status whether outdoors or indoors regarding venues, where people are clustered together for an extended time period should be considered. The best explanation I heard regarding viral transmission, is the cigarette smoke stream analogy. If the Covid virus had a scent regarding transmission load similar to tobacco smoke, one would want to be upstream and not downstream of the trail. However, unlike cigarette or cigar smoke when you can tell by smell when you are beyond the immediate irritation or smell distance, Viruses do not provide a scent regarding how far one should distance to avoid infection. Just as Broadway theaters and the Lollapalooza festival are requiring Vax status to attend, HC, the PL etc., should follow the same protocols to ensure athlete and fan safety. Bottom line, the protocol for all events should be, if you are not Vaxxed, do not plan on attending any events indoor or outdoor on Mt. St. James this fall. Keep yourself in another place other than Fitton, Hart, Hogan, etc.

Outdoors or indoors? Big difference. Polar Park has no mandates for either the outdoor or indoor areas and masks are few and far between. Same with Yankee Stadium and Citi Field...for now. Definitely prepare yourself for these venues to pull a 180 on masks and vaccination/ proof of negative test needed for entry.

My company re-instituted indoor mask mandate for all company employees regardless of vaccination status, as of today.
NYC likely to institute the same today. Norwalk CT brought back its indoor mask mandate over weekend, effective today.

While the term vaccine seems to be used in an all encompassing fashion for the current public health debacle, would seem to me to be more accurate and appropriate to incorporate the phrase 'gene therapy' into the ongoing efforts.
Here are two interesting reads on the topic of gene therapy which seem to be balanced in terms of the pros, cons, and ethical questions therein:
Gene Therapy and Covid-19 Vaccines, June 2, 2021: www.nature.com/articles/s41435-021-00136-6
The Ethics of Gene Therapy, 1997: www.ndsu.edu/pubweb/~mcclean/plsc431/students/bergeson.htm
I will defer to those frequenting these parts as to just how much you want to trust and embrace those who are involved in this activity of gene therapy.
BTW . . . you gentlemen see what is happening in France, Greece, and especially Australia? Worth a peek . You see what is going on in the Uk? Worth a peek

The only "semantics" in play here seems to be labeling something as "gene therapy" in the sense that they contain genetic material, vs. saying they are something sinister because they can alter genes in the recipient. The label or categorization is meaningless if the boogeyman consequence of gene therapy isn't in play.
Again, the money quote from Phreek's article:
"So the chances are zero that that can happen," Offit says.

UK is instructive. Bring the booster online for older folks ASAP. I think one could walk into a CVS or Walgreens and get a third shot if he or she was willing to lie and say it was their first. But if you got vaccinated you are likely a rule follower when it comes to your health and willing to wait until Dr. Fauci gives the go ahead.

Lambda variant shows vaccine resistance - study The researchers warn that with Lambda being labeled a "Variant of Interest" by the WHO, rather than a "Variant of Concern," people might not realize it is a serious ongoing threat. By REUTERS AUGUST 2, 2021 23:39 Patients suffering from the coronavirus disease (COVID-19) get treatment at the casualty ward in Lok Nayak Jai Prakash (LNJP) hospital, amidst the spread of the disease in New Delhi, India April 15, 2021. (photo credit: REUTERS/DANISH SIDDIQUI) Patients suffering from the coronavirus disease (COVID-19) get treatment at the casualty ward in Lok Nayak Jai Prakash (LNJP) hospital, amidst the spread of the disease in New Delhi, India April 15, 2021. The Lambda variant of the coronavirus, first identified in Peru and now spreading in South America, is highly infectious and more resistant to vaccines than the original version of the virus the emerged from Wuhan, China, Japanese researchers have found. In a paper posted on Wednesday on bioRxiv ahead of peer review, the researchers warn that with Lambda being labeled a "Variant of Interest" by the World Health Organization, rather than a "Variant of Concern," people might not realize it is a serious ongoing threat. In laboratory experiments, they found that three mutations in Lambda's spike protein, known as RSYLTPGD246-253N, 260 L452Q and F490S, help it resist neutralization by vaccine-induced antibodies. Two additional mutations, T76I and L452Q, help make Lambda highly infectious, they found. Although it is not clear yet whether this variant is more dangerous than the Delta now threatening populations in many countries, senior researcher Kei Sato of the University of Tokyo believes "Lambda can be a potential threat to the human society." SARS-CoV-2 Lambda variant exhibits higher infectivity and immune resistance Izumi Kimura, Yusuke Kosugi, Jiaqi Wu, Daichi Yamasoba, Erika P Butlertanaka, Yuri L Tanaka, Yafei Liu, Kotaro Shirakawa, Yasuhiro Kazuma, Ryosuke Nomura, Yoshihito Horisawa, View ORCID Profile Kenzo Tokunaga, Akifumi Takaori-Kondo, View ORCID Profile Hisashi Arase, The Genotype to Phenotype Japan (G2P-Japan) Consortium, Akatsuki Saito, View ORCID Profile So Nakagawa, View ORCID Profile Kei Sato doi: doi.org/10.1101/2021.07.28.454085 Summary SARS-CoV-2 Lambda, a new variant of interest, is now spreading in some South American countries; however, its virological features and evolutionary trait remain unknown. Here we reveal that the spike protein of the Lambda variant is more infectious and it is attributed to the T76I and L452Q mutations. The RSYLTPGD246-253N mutation, a unique 7-amino-acid deletion mutation in the N-terminal domain of the Lambda spike protein, is responsible for evasion from neutralizing antibodies. Since the Lambda variant has dominantly spread according to the increasing frequency of the isolates harboring the RSYLTPGD246-253N mutation, our data suggest that the insertion of the RSYLTPGD246-253N mutation is closely associated with the massive infection spread of the Lambda variant in South America. Highlights Lambda S is highly infectious and T76I and L452Q are responsible for this property Lambda S is more susceptible to an infection-enhancing antibody RSYLTPGD246-253N, L452Q and F490S confer resistance to antiviral immunity Figure1 Competing Interest Statement The authors have declared no competing interest. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention recommended Tuesday that all students in kindergarten through 12th grade should wear masks when they return to classrooms for the new school year.
The newly issued CDC guideline includes youngsters who have already been vaccinated.www.nbcnews.com/news/us-news/cdc-recommends-masks-all-k-12-students-even-those-who-n1275173Last year some US k-12 schools were open and some were closed, some schools were masked and some were unmasked, some had sports and some did not. In some cases this was within the same city or town. These differences did not make a difference in regards to Covid hospitalization/deaths and young people. Educational and psychological outcomes, not so much. Obviously, politics and poor judgment trumped science. Which is why we are seeing pushback regarding the proposed masking of the kiddies. College mask-ups of the vaccinated students are likely this fall. Perhaps there will be a sober look at cost/benefit -at least at a few schools - regarding this cohort of young folks.

The referenced Ghion Journal was founded by Teodrose Fikre, who still operates the website. He is an Ethiopian who is chair of a group titled Ethiopians for Connotational Connotational Monarchy, The name Ghion apparently is taken from the Ghion Ethiopian Restaurant in Washington DC, where Fikre lives. ^^^ For reasons unfathomable, Crossports changes Con-stit-utional to Connotational.
In WWII, there was a one-sided battle that became known as The Great Marianas Turkey Shoot. I am increasingly reminded of that when non-credible and spurious sources are paraded out and dispatched with such ease.

Dr. Ray, what is the time lag between which somebody takes a vaccine and might display symptoms of ADE? Additionally, if you wanted to call the NIH so they can update their site, I might imagine that they may very well appreciate your looking out for them. 😳 When I read your posts I am reminded of the theme from Twilight Zone.

What Fordham's policy looks like today (in part): As of Monday, August 2, the University requires all unvaccinated individuals to wear masks indoors, and in any public space on campus. The University recommends fully vaccinated individuals wear masks indoors while on campus. The University will continue its policy of admitting only faculty, students, and staff at indoor gatherings, events, performances and meetings through the fall semester. Alumni, parents, and their guests may attend outdoor events with proof of vaccination. (So no alumni etc..fans at their nov-dec basketball games)

From the online Boston Globe today.
re: Provincetown.
I believe the total number of cases traced to 4th of July in Provincetown is about 900. Most Provincetown residents are fully vaccinated, though its hard to get an exact percentage because Provincetown is vaccinating seasonal residents (who are not included in Census population counts).

Will Fordham require proof of vax for football and soccer? Yes according to the announcement. In practice if they will actually check is another matter. Could depend on whether a surge erupts when everyone returns to campus or if infections subside like they did in the UK, which would be most welcome.

P-town is a welcoming community that has long-time experience dealing with life threatening illness. Most residents know quite well the need for proper precautions. However, with tens of thousands coming and going as they visit during the summer months, there may be many who are not as careful.
