After a very short indoor season, HC has been competing in a few meets this Spring. Typically, this would include a bunch of invitationals. I think that they lost one meet to the COVID shut down. This season has essentially been dual and tri meets. There have been some bright spots. Patriot League championships are 4/30 and 5/1 at West Point.
Gabe Piepergedes (the 2019 IC4A champion) has broken his school record in the 400 hurdles running below 52.3 on two separate occasions. He has the two fastest PL times this year.
First year athlete Mike Mazzocca jumped 6'9 1/2 " (2nd in PL) yesterday in a dual meet against URI. That's more than 3 inches higher than he went in high school. He also won the 110 hurdles in 14.53 (4th in PL)
Senior Michael Pichay will likely go to the PL championship as the top seed in the triple jump--49'+
Senior Daniel Dempsey is currently 4th in the PL in the high jump at 6'5"
I imagine it was tough to train all fall and winter without getting to compete.

Nice to see some good performances. Coach K is a wonderful coach and person so enjoy seeing his athletes have success. Even more impressive given the lack of a proper indoor track facility. The old field house "track" was bad but now they don't even have that!

What alum said..no real indoor track in the Jo. Indoor practices are on the indoor turf football field.

Most team points in school history for the men. They also beat Boston university for the first time ever at the Patriot League Championships. Incredible performances all around.

I see that Pierpergedes, Pichay and women's pole vaulter Christa Moore were among the winners in the awards announced yesterday. Looking at Twitter, I also discovered that Gabe will use his COVID induced extra year of eligibility at Michigan in a sports management masters program. He is in a pretty good position to qualify for the NCAA Championships Eastern qualifying meet.

It was not intentional. Often happens using an IPad, as fingers move across the screen. I have removed the dislike and changed it to a like. 🙂

The team continues with the New England Outdoor Championships tomorrow. Let's see if Michael Pichay can win the triple jump (remember when it was called the "Hop, Skip, and Jump"?). and look out for Gabe Piepergerdes in the 400 meter hurdles
Tidbit-- Austin Butler's high school record of a 198 Javelin throw would have been good for fifth place in New England if he replicated it today

As KY notes, men's track is at New Englands. Gabe easily qualified for the finals in the 400 hurdles. Pichay will attempt to win, and as importantly, to qualify for the NCAA Eastern Qualifying meet. Top 48 from our half of the country qualify. He is a few inches and a few places outside the mark. Frosh Mike Mazzocca is similarly about a quarter inch and a few places outside the mark in the high jump. He passed on the 110 hurdles to concentrate on his best event. Gabe is well within the qualifying mark. I can't recall if anyone has gone to nationals since before I entered college. I imagine Coach K will detail that for us after the weekend.
There are lots of meets this weekend, so the whole field will likely improve some. Think of it like trying to make the cut at a golf tournament on Friday except that nobody can make a bogey--they can only get better.
On the women's side, Christa Moore and Annie Lineberger competed in both the ECAC meet and the New Englands on the same day! They went 1-2 at the NE's. Moore finished fourth at the ECAC. She is almost certainly in the NCAA meet.
Links for live results and video of the meets are on goholycross.com.
KY--Thanks for calling it the "hop, skip and jump." Here is the great American jumper, Michael Conley, at the 1992 Olympics with his best jump--over 59 feet--but with just barely illegal wind reading of 2.1 meters per second. Another great American jumper, Willie Banks, is doing color as his world record is challenged.
Conley's son is the NBA player of the same name.

Small point...in between the "hop, skip and jump" and "triple jump," the event was officially called the "hop, step and jump" for several years. I am not sure that any other track and fiend event has had three actual names.

Congratulations to both women';s and men's track and field. That is the best pair of finishes I can remember in many years. Track is a sport that seems too be slowly improving without much notice. As a former track coach and current T+F official it is nice to see. I am even seeing some Holy Cross shirts/sweatshirts at some of the big meets in North Jersey.

Gabe ran 52.60 to finish 6th in his heat and 37th overall. It took 51.90 to advance. He hit the last hurdle hard.
He had quite a college career. He came in as a multi event athlete who was also a decent middle distance runner. At HC he won an IC4A title, made nationals and will compete as a grad student for Michigan. Congrats to him, Coach K and his assistants on a job well done.
