Re: the UConn offense. The previous record for fewest yards gained by a Fresno State opponent in their stadium was 125 by Incarnate Word in 2007. UConn had 107 total net yards of offense. (The all-time Fresno State record is 18 yards by an opponent (I never heard of the school) in 1942, -- those WWII games in 1942 produced weird matchups,)
Don't know whether the net yardage differential -- 431 yards -- is also a record.

We beat Quantico in ‘64, lost in ‘63. The 16-0 ‘64 game saw the debut of QB soph Jack Lentz, who rushed for 155 yds on 29 carries and both TDs. He passed for both 2 point conversions.. Both games at Fitton. Quantico was led by HC great, Denny Golden.

A great guy, leader and motivator. Made him a terrific coach to play for as well.

Without going back to the Fresno State media guide to verify, I found Whittier College is a 2021 opponent of Pomona-Pitzer, and then looking at the 1942 schedule for Fresno State, the Bulldogs shut out Whittier in their season opener, --so I'll say the opponent that gained a net total of 18 yards of offense was Whittier, and Whittier will hold that ignominious record until the end of time. Whittier's most famous football alum had graduated ten years earlier, so no finger-pointing at him for the loss. That alum was succeeded by the center, long snapper, and linebacker on two national championship teams for the Maize and Blue.

Weather looking good for Saturday at the moment. From the Hartford CBS affiliate:
Early projections for Labor Day Weekend are good. We should dry out in the second half of Thursday which will lead into a dry day on Friday. It may get slightly warmer on Saturday. A cold front would arrive at some time Saturday night or Sunday. Temperatures will be near or slightly above average.

I remember two of those games very well. Quantico never tried to roll up the score with almost all key players had five years or more experience (and many were all-stars in college). But, when one reporter said their offense was "three yards and a cloud of dust" the coach replied: "That's four yards and a cloud..if you please."

If this is a trivia quiz, Nixon and Ford Ford was arguably the most accomplished athlete to serve as President, yet Chevy Chase pilloried him early on SNL and Ford could never shake the stumbler and bumbler image.

Tulane is now a plausible future FBS opponent. But it would be better to schedule it after hurricane season.

Excellent interview. I have to say that Bob Chesney is so well spoken and at ease in every interview, perhaps the best of any HC coach that I can remember in any sport.
I especially liked what he emphasizes to recruits: Worcester (yes, Worcester), the alumni network and the education as well as playing an FBS team and ability to be in the playoffs (unlike Ivies for those latter two).
The team discipline and resiliency are what he likes about the team.
To be honest, I thought we'd lose Chesney before Blossom.

Never thought I’d think that ‘a loss to UConn on Saturday would be a bad loss’ but that how I feel

FWIW (probably not much), ESPN’s FPI model now has HC as the most likely FCS v FBS upset after UCONN’s performance on Saturday. We are now at 38% (was 25% before). That puts us in line with SDSU beating Colorado State (36%) & Eastern Washington beating UNLV (35%). The only other FCS school the model gives over a 1 in 5 shot is U of South Dakota over Kansas (22%).
Of note (and per my last comment to NYcrusader in the UCONN v Fresno thread), Monmouth (top 15 FCS program) has an 8.5% chance of beating Middle Tennessee (not a bottom 15 FBS program but probably around ~100 of out 130) That game is obviously one to keep an eye on as well.

UConn board has a poster who found a spread for our game = Huskies 2 1/2 point favorites - very close to a toss-up game

That sounds about right to me. No way we are favored despite the Fresno no-show. I am reasonably confident this will be a good and close game like the last one, I would put our odds of pulling out a win at 40%-45% and losing by 3 or fewer points at 75%-80%.

My sense is Edsall loses close games more often than Chesney does. There will be a ton of pressure on UConn if it's within three points in the fourth quarter. They better hope they overpower us and not let us hang around.

President Vince Rougeau strikes me as an outgoing fellow. I hope he is "pumped and jacked" as Pete Carroll used to say when he was Patriots coach, for Saturday's game and will be in East Hartford glad handing with HC faithful and students, hobnobbing with his counterpart at UConn and just plain enjoying himself. That type of enthusiasm and support sends a great message to the players and coaches and the students that Holy Cross supports it's teams.

So I checked the UCONN website to see if their HC game day preview was out yet (it wasn’t) but I clicked on and heard the last 15-20 minutes of Edsall’s live interview on the weekly UCONN football show. A couple highlights: 1) As for the Fresno game, he said he thought the Defense played well the first quarter and did some good things the other 3 quarters despite the stat sheet. He said it was the big plays that killed them starting with the strip sack and fumble return for the TD at the end of Q1 (which was 50/50 on whether the UCONN QB’s arm was going forward) Surprising to me, the UCONN Defense only gave up 7 “ big plays” the entire game (3 on the ground and 4 through the air) He defines “big play” as a run of 12 yards or more and a pass of 20 yards or more. It was the 4 passes (39, 41, 61 and 86 yds) that killed them and he broke down what went wrong schematically and technically on each. Offense was inept the entire game and just frankly outmatched (especially on the line) by Fresno’s front 7. One thing of important note is that they were missing BOTH starting D-Ends. He expects one to definitely be back this week and the other is 50/50 (day to day). He said this will help them tremendously get more pressure on the opposing QB and opens up the Defensive playbook. 2) Not too much on the outlook for HC. Briefly referred to the game in 2017 and said they have broken down all 4 of our games from the spring. Said most noticeable thing on film is that we play much more physical on both sides of the ball. Mentioned the program’s success over the last 3 years under coach Chesney (two PL titles and FCS playoffs against high quality opponents)
Concluded by saying UCONN will come out well prepared with lots of energy to get a W.
