If they’re playing FCS teams, the only reason for HC not to be in the regular rotation is if they’re afraid we’ll beat them. That’s a legit fear for both teams at the moment. I suspect HC brought more fans to East Hartford than most or all FCS teams that have come through there in the last several years which is good for the top line. But it's hard to figure out how it helps the bottom line to pay out almost $20 per attendee based on 2017 attendance. Concessions, swag, programs and parking? UConn also has required donations on top of the face value of the tickets for season ticket holders.

But it's hard to figure out how it helps the bottom line to pay out almost $20 per attendee based on 2017 attendance. Concessions, swag, programs and parking? The way I costed out such proposals when I was a marketer was to amortize the extra cost versus the extra benefit, By that I mean I'd not cost out the $400,000 over the total attendance but against the incremental attendance and any other benefits both short and long-term. So if UConn pays HC $400,000 and draws 10.000 extra fans the cost is $40 per incremental fan . This assumes there was a zero cost alternative opponent. If, instead, you're comparing it to paying a lower amount to a less attractive opponent the comparison is easy: Pay HC $400,000 and draw 24,000 fans versus paying Northeast New Jersey State $140,000 and drawing 11,000 fans, HC draws 13,000 more fans for $260,000 more or $20 per incremental fan. Of course, there are other considerations: brand exposure, target consumer sampling (would some HC fans return for a non-HC game at UConn?), possible qualification for a bowl game, etc

How many people are lining up to watch this horrendous program?

Pretty early, especially for older tailgaters I imagine it will be too early for the younger college crowd as well. I hope we do not have to prepare ourselves for a small turnout. HC should be sending multiple bus loads of kids down to UConn. I think when I was in school we would call it a kegs and eggs tailgate.

I believe you may be overly optimistic How long has it been since HC sent bus loads anywhere ? probably since some of us ponied up the cash to send a bus of students to Dayton for the NCAA basketball tournament game EDIT: Wrong---newer bus trips noted in posts below

I believe you may be overly optimistic How long has it been since HC sent bus loads anywhere ? HC sent a bus to UCONN in 2017. I know because my oldest son was on said bus. HC also sponsored a really nice tailgate at that game.

Presume that means one. Good, but far from busloads. I think we sent a few bus loads of students to Yankee Stadium. As home team the AD invited our NROTC color guard to the game but required that they pay for the bus trip. The O'Callahan Society offered to pick up the tab but our CO would let them go because our cheerleaders didn't have to pay the fare. A local NYC HS JROTC unit performed the honor.

I don’t think it is much worse than 1:00 (a pretty standard college football start time) and we’ve had plenty of 12:00 starts. Just don’t see it nailing turnout much, IMHO.

I think the AA should make the r/t bus down to East Hartford free to students and get a many as possible to the game - I think the pre-season hype (even among students) will be the most in many years

HC should be sending multiple bus loads of kids down to UConn. I think when I was in school we would call it a kegs and eggs tailgate. It is Labor Day weekend, but I notice that there are classes on Monday (Labor Day.) I would imagine the goal is to keep the kids from heading to the Cape or some such location. A trip to sunny East Hartford is just what they need. Make it free--bus and food and game ticket. (They have to buy their own beer.) If you got 400 kids to go and it cost you $50 per kid that is $20,000. We are getting paid $450,000. I think we can afford it. If the Athletic Department doesn't want it to come out of its budget see if half can be charged to student activities.
Of course, I also think that they should pay the kids $5 and a free hot dog to go to basketball games.
EDIT: I see that purplehaze and I are thinking alike.

Pretty early, especially for older tailgaters Funny, I would think just the opposite. The kids will be the ones having a hard time getting up that early. Older people that I know will have a bigger issue with a 7:00 kick off at Polar than a noon kick-off. Don't all home games start at noon after daylight savings ends?

That stand on principle cost the color guard members a lifetime memory and a reward for all the time they put in as well as good publicity for HC having an NROTC program. It doesn't make the AD look good either. I wonder if the band attended this "home" game and if they were treated like the cheerleaders or the color guard?

The night games are definitely less attractive to the older crowd. The "sweet spot" as far as tailgating goes is 330pm kickoff. Every Navy home game in Annapolis starts at this time and its great. Get to the parking around noon and you have almost 3 hours to party before having to worry about going in. And no one's forced to stay up past bedtime.

Those 3:30 home starts are dictated by CBSSN as it covers Army home games that start at noon - typical across college football on tv with noon, 3:30 and then evening kick times

I believe you may be overly optimistic How long has it been since HC sent bus loads anywhere ? We actually took a bus to UConn in 1985...miserable day both weather-wise and on the field...22-2 loss. Most stayed on the bus and drank from the keg. There was a very good student student turn-out in Columbus in 2007 for the SIU hoop game...I think they mostly took buses but I forget.

Buses departed 5am for Columbus and returned immediately back to Worcester after the 2 games (Virginia Tech/Illinois followed by HC/SIU). We had a similar arrangement for the game at American for the 2008-2009 championship game. Round trip to DC same day.

Just thinking about this type of trip will make me exhausted for 2-3 weeks.

I think I've been to 4 weddings in steady rain; one was on that day and it was the worst of the 4.
And, another wedding of someone I know happened the same year, the day of that Dartmouth monsoon. That was warmer but worse than any of them.
