Coach mentioned RChamp might be the choice to be in the back of the 1-3-1. Gave CLS the edge in where the frosh are right now. Also said that AnT has gotten stronger over the summer, and hopes that he will do a better job driving through contact at the rim (like he did as a frosh). He also mentioned his speaking with with AnT about his shooting after the season was over. Paraphrasing here, but it was basically "hey man, you took 10 shots a game. If you don't shoot it better you will be getting half those shots". Coach thinks he will shoot it better. That prompted me to ask my question: In a long winded fashion, I was trying to get him to give his thoughts on how much stock he put into the 5 offensive positions on a team. I got about 4 words out before he intejected "Make Shots!!". After, he said he did not like constraining players with labels regarding what position they played; basically, he looks for having multiple players with multiple skills. So, it doesn't sound like he cares who gets the shots, points, assists, rebounds, etc. He also pointed out it was in his background (I think alluding to his Princeton upbringing). Fun night to get in the mood for the season. I had trouble telling whether the immediate interjection from Coach Carmody was an attempt at humor, general exhaustion at the number and types of questions (not any particular person or question, per se), or just an attempt to give as little information away about the offense, without offending the asker. Still not sure whether the answer truly boils down to the favoring of the 'Jimmys and Joes' or wanting to say as little as possible, but in the nicest possible way.

I think Carm keeps everything pretty close to the vest and, if we're being honest, doesn't enjoy having to do alumni engagements type events and "coaches nights" -- fine by me, as long as we continue to win.

I just watched the Coaches Show. I'm a huge fan of CBC but.........he insulted Brian, the interviewer. I'm sorry. It was uncalled for. Not sure what you're referring to. I was standing right there and there and didn't observe anything insulting. There was some good natured banter between Coach Carmody and Glasheen but nothing that came across as a perceived or intended insult. For what it's worth, I was standing near Glasheen's dad and not only did he not seem insulted, but Mr. Glasheen enjoyed the banter and thought the levity added to the interview

He told Brian how to do his job--twice, was sarcastic, shook his head in mock disgust as he look out to the audience, was genuinely pissed when Brian mentioned the Kansas game. Brian was just a young guy trying to do his job. I saw a mean streak in CBC. I knows he doesn't enjoy these type promotions, but Brian and WEEI help CBC make his big bucks. He should be more courteous.

My sense, too, is that, at least on this particular evening, he didn't love the idea of being there/ doing it... but, I think whenever he interacts with the alumni or the public-- regardless of how he really feels or what he really likes-- he moves the needle in an even more positive direction. I, for one, came to the evening excited about this season and liking Coach Carmody and left even more so. There's something very fortunate about finishing 15 - 19, when five of the wins are the PL championship tournament and NCAA play in game, vs. being 15 -19 and being tossed in the PL quarterfinals: We're all excited about the new season.

CBC was talking about the tough OOC schedule. and the good that comes from playing such a schedule. CBC said the tough games are very beneficial as long as they don't get beat by 40.....another shot of humor when Brian ask about Kansas last season...Something like "Oh you have to bring up the Kansas game." A little more banter on the subject with smiles and grins...Nothing malicious!

He should be more courteous. I am sorry you took it that way. I saw him joking with Brian and trying to keep it light. I never expect to hear significant insights (except, perhaps, in post-game comments) in a public forum from any coach of a serous program. He was, IMHO courteous and informal - which shows a positive side to him. He was clearly not robotic and Brian seemed to pick up on his tone pretty quickly and played along with it ("They're not numbers, actually. They are just bullet points.") I heard no sarcasm or any serious telling him "how to do his job." His comments on the open guard spot and on the three very different games of the eating candidates were helpful. I also kind what I heard about AT's improvement in both strength and play. The season can't come soon enough...even with some of those very tough early games.

Back to basketball.....
He did talk about how the success of the team will be with the sophomore class (mainly MZ, JF, PB, we know what we're getting in KC). Sounds like all three of them had nice offseasons. Out of those three, I am most excited about MZ. I thought he had a nice non-conference season before hitting the wall. I could see him stepping into CH shoes and putting up a 10 pt 3 reb 3 assist stat line for the year (hoping shooting 40%+ from 3).

When I talked with ADNP in Dayton I mentioned that Coach Carmody had a dry sense of humor and NP responded that "Yes, you really have to pay attention." I was not there last night but I have to think that dry wit was what Coach was employing with the interviewer
.Okay--just watched the interview--very informative and entertaining. Coach could not have been more cooperative and cordial to the interviewer,

Luckily for Matt, Coach told Non Alum Dave he doesn't believe in 1 - 2 - 3 - 4 - 5. HAHA

I thought that emphasis on the sophomores was right on point. We pretty much know our seniors and their abilities. The big jump in performance often comes (as has been said) between freshman and sophomore years. If we do get contributions from the freshman, that is still to be seen after the season starts. If their talent and potential can be turned into on-court performance, this could be a very good year.

Note that Coach talked about them being in the weight room-I have to think that increased strength and improved conditioning can play a big role in that frosh to soph improvement that we hope to see. MZ is intriguing as I think he has a higher upside than what CH was able to contribute. Coach also talked about AT--confidence and strength--as I've said in prior seasons, if he can return to his freshman level of performance we will be in great shape as a team.

Yes, he made specific reference to the confidence and physical strength being of benefit as AT drives to the hoop boldly and finishes strong, even in traffic vs. anticipating potential contact and kind of backing off as he gets close.

It really takes a full year for a shoulder injury, like a labrum tear, to return to its pre injury strength and range of movement. I believe last season AT was still hampered by that recovery period. I look for him to have a great senior season!
