Your comment about Walt Bell was most kind. Nice work.

Who is running the athletic department ? No contracts for assistant coaches, grossly underpaid head coach - who wins PL championships and wants to strive and win national championships at the FCS level... The AD needs to wake up and re-sign Chesney for the good of the HC Football Program and himself ( Football is the only winning program he has ). Holy Cross has another chance to have a successful run like we had with Coach Duffner. Coach Chesney is a very special human being with extraordinary traits as a motivated leader of young men. I was at the golf outing and the talk of the day was about getting him a new long term contract with fair compensation and further support to his staff. I can envision many alums going to the Board of Trustees to take supportive action in the near future. Personally, I feel this is the last piece of the puzzle to insure the football program's success into the future.

Am I correct that Chesney’s current contract runs through the 2022 season? Definitely will want to get an extension done sooner than later if that’s the case. Can’t prevent him from leaving if he has enough success at HC but it would be nice to at least raise the bar on what it would take to get him to leave.

As mentioned, hopefully it will be a long term contract.
Let’s allow the new HC President, Vince Rougeau, to take office next month, and have time to review with Marcus Blossom, the contract options and the support that will be needed for Coach Chesney to be successful.
Unlike HC Presidents in the past, Vince is a lawyer, who is very familiar with contracts, and has taught at both Notre Dame and Boston College. Both Vince and Marcus are seasoned professionals in their fields.
If you were the incoming President, especially one who is an experienced lawyer, would you have wanted your predecessor to have signed off on a long term contract, less than three months before you start your new role and head of the organization?
Already, behind the view of many, there has been a change in attitude I sense, from an always “no”, when you ask for certain improvements, to a “we can do this”. The new Video Board at Fitton is a prime example.
Allow for the new President to settle in for a couple of months, start the conversations between him, ADMB, Coach Chesney, and the Chair of the Trustees Committee on Athletics.
In the meantime, continue to advocate for the changes through the Friends of Crusader Football, to help secure the proper funding for the positions. What is needed for Holy Cross Athletics to succeed is for certain positions to be endowed. Certainly, the AD as well as the Football and M/W Basketball should have this funding, just like the Ivy League Programs, so that HC can recruit and retain the rising stars in D1 athletics.

The strategic plan for the college -- covers ten years forward -- of which the published strategic plan for athletics is a part, will not be signed off by Fr. B. Rather, final review and sign-off will be by Vince [shorthand, I do not know him] and the BofT. Similarly, plans for reconstruction of the Easy St. dorms and for construction of the new residences will be passed to Vince and the BofT.

Unfortunately, Mark Duffner is the only former coach still connected with HC. I hope that he continues to provide support to the recent legacy he helped established. There aren't too many other possibilities, there's only 3 living former head coaches. One is the head coach of a competitor, his loyalties at this point should and do lie elsewhere. Another one (according to the www) is 89 years old. That leaves Coach Vaas; hope from our end he's at least kept abreast of events like this. I doubt there's any animosity at this point. My recollections of the last article I read about him, didn't seem like he was bitter. Peter got caught when the resources for football were downsized but the expectations weren't.

Shorthand accepted as long as you don't call him Vinny before meeting him. Are there any current FB or MBB endowed head coaches in the PL yet? I can't think of anyone being called the Joe Blow'49 head coach in any game stories although you do see that in the I.L. It's a little cumbersome to repeat the name for perpetuity but if that's what it takes. Since Vince is comfortable with contracts perhaps he could negotiate a 10 year naming right so the donor can enjoy the recognition while he/she is still alive and then the honor can be re-sold, with right of first refusal to the same alum or heirs.

The official title of Colgate's football coach (position is now vacant; there is an acting coach) is: FRED '50 AND MARILYN DUNLAP HEAD FOOTBALL COACH.

Hopefully HC got a good deal from the course. Having run some charity golf tournaments I know that the bottom line often gets substantially diminished by the amount due the golf course for greens fees and food. The e-mail invitation for the golf outing included the following: "$350 Golf and Dinner, includes $115 donation to football $250 Golf and Dinner for Young Alumni Classes 2017-2021, includes $15 donation to football $100 Dinner Only, includes $55 donation to football $60 Dinner Only for Young Alumni Classes 2017-2021, includes $15 donation to football" Extrapolating from this information, it appears the golf course received $190 for each golfer and $45 for each dinner.

A portion of the $190 will be for things like prizes for the winners and gifts for the golfers. Not a large portion, but something

That can be used when introducing the coach either in person at a function or a written or media interview/talk and then afterwards it's just "Coach Jones". A very generous endowment by Fred and Marilyn Dunlap or their children. Colgate, like the rest of the PL schools has a lot of class.

Peter got caught when the resources for football were downsized but the expectations weren't. Combined with the school having no clue how to implement an effective "need based" football program. This....a thousand times....much of the reason we floundered in football during the non-scholarship-era of PL football. We basically vacated our position as the "top dog in PL football" because of this...other schools in the PL, particularly Colgate and Lehigh, had a long tradition of fielding "need based" football teams which we really nevah got a feel for.
