This is very impressive--thank you Mr Collins.
Does this guy have a way with words?-- "When I’m composing poems, the classical languages are among the candles that light up my page.”

Humanities and the classics must be fostered and supported. Kudos to Mr. Collins and HC.

He's a very talented poet but writes poetry that is still accessible. I think this is very hard to do. Wonderful of him to make this gift.

I have attended several Poetry events that featured Billy Collins. Most recently, his Holy Cross evening, sponsored by the Alumni Association. My wife just gave me his book “Whale Day”, last Christmas. If you have not purchased his books, you should, as you will enjoy his collection of poetry. With the popularity of Amanda Gorman as a young poet, interest in poetry is on the upswing. Once the Prior Center for Performing Arts is opened, the Holy Cross English and Classics Departments should sponsor the “ Billy Collins” Poetry Festival, similar to the Sunken Garden Festival each summer. www.hillstead.org/sunken-garden-poetry-festival/www.hillstead.org/wp-content/uploads/2014/10/Chronology-Poets-list.pdf

It'd be interesting to see if there are plans for the school to market the Classics department in a more prominent way. The article states it's one of the best undergrad only departments in the country.

Two scholarships will be awarded annually to current students who have demonstrated a commitment to major in classics and also show financial need. This adds to the financial aid already available to classics majors, i.e. to walk ons. With below it appears that 16/17 classics majors would be on scholarship each year. Every year, the Department of Classics awards four-year, full-tuition scholarships to high school graduates who will major in Classics at Holy Cross. The Henry Bean, S.J., Scholarship Each year the department awards two Rev. Henry Bean, S.J., Scholarships. The Bean Scholarship was instituted in 1973 by Rev. John Brooks, S.J., president of the College from 1970 to 1994. Fr. Brooks named the scholarship after Rev. Henry Bean, S.J., who had taught him Latin and Greek at Holy Cross in the 1940s. The William FitzGerald, S.J., Scholarship Every four years, the department also awards a Rev. William FitzGerald, S.J., Scholarship, also a full-tuition merit scholarship. The FitzGerald Scholarship is named after Rev. William FitzGerald, S.J., who taught in the department from the 1960s to the 1980s. The FitzGerald Scholarship will next be awarded for an entering member of the class of 2024.
