It was very true at the time this piece was written.

This is one of the best UMess skeds in years. Remarkable job by Bamford getting the most out it, and it's not even close to "the worst FBS schedule ever" as someone above asserts. All this schedule does it give Walt Bell some easy wins to help his 1-15 record.

When's the last time you watched UMess play?
There isn't a HS team on the sked, so there certainly isn't any "easy wins".
And to reiterate what you aren't grasping: being in UMess' or Conn's shoes makes scheduling extremely difficult.

My first thought on seeing this schedule was that this was an excellent schedule for independent UMass given the circumstances. Pitt BC Eastern Michigan Coastal Carolina Toledo UCONN Florida State Liberty URI Maine West Point New Mexico State Nice mix of very tough games and pick ‘em games and winnable games with some local Northeast flavor tossed on. The 2 CAA games provide home games v local and beatable opponents — but they’ll be competitive.

My point is they can't play on the FBS level as an independent. They are 20-81 since they moved up. If their scheduling is difficult get out of the FBS. Is it that difficult? If they can't beat the FCS teams then they should pack it up.

They were at least smart enough not to schedule another MVC school- last time they did, So. Illinois beat them handily.

To be fair they do also play Pitt, Florida State, Eastern Michigan, Liberty, Coastal Carolina, Toledo... That has to be the worst FBS schedule ever. 3 Power Five teams . BC, Pitt and Florida state. Liberty and Coastal is alright. Known wonder why nobody likes Umass football. Other than schools in P5 conferences who have lots of P5 games, do a lot of FBS schools have as many as three P5 opponents? Any 8 team conference would have 7 conference games and 4 OOC. More than half your OOC would have to be P5. Bigger conferences might not even have 4 OOC games. With an independent like UMass with everything OOC it's easier to get three P5, but I can't imagine too many conference affiliated FBS schools having three P5
