Joe was a Whitton recruit (in my class), not sure the circumstances of Provost getting to HC. Joe was a Boisture recruit who originally was a member of the ‘72 class. He decided to delay his enrollment and spent the additional year at Assumption Prep. Yeah, that's right, now that I think about it. Saw him play hoop in what was then called the Tech Tournament for Jamaica Plain HS, would have been 1968, not 1969. There was mention during the game that he was a fantastic football player and the mention turned out to be true.

Interesting to see that HC comes in ahead of Villanova.

Not especially surprising to me. Villanova is really a basketball school and their stadium from my memory when I went to watch our TG team lose to their eventual national champs was considerably smaller than Fitton.
Not surprising Crusaders pull in more than Princeton or Stony Brook either.
At FCS level in the Northeast, we are actually pretty successful but with a 23,000+ capacity stadium and memories of a full house for BC games, we have expectations that exceed reality.

Could it be those fabulous teams of the golden '80's raised our expectations beyond reality? This is not a statement but a concern I have had for 30+ years. No doubt some of the criticism has been well intentioned and right on the mark. We do have every right to expect HC to be competitive and win. But, are some criticizing the program for a failure to achieve dominance in the PL? Eventually HC will return to normality with a competitive but not necessarily dominant team. And, that is okay.

Interesting that Yale averaged 13,263. Our game was very sparsely attended, as I recall.

What surprises me is that he was only 3 stars considering not just the quantity but the high quality of offers. Nebraska, Notre Dame, Penn State, etc. etc. Just WOW!

ALL, I wanted to confirm with 2 friends that are very close to 2 respective football programs (Nebraska and Kansas) before I commented but here is the back story on Avery. Coming out of his junior season he was on the exclusive ESPN TOP 300 list. As he began to take his official visits and coaches saw him in person (rather than just on tape or from the stands), rumor spread quickly that he was only 5'8 - 5'9 and not 5'10 - 5'11 which had been listed on most recruiting services (Rivals, Max Preps, 247) As word spread, many of the top POWER 5 FBS programs moved on by either officially retracting their offer or just making it clear he wasn't a top priority. As such, his ranking (4 star and ESPN TOP 300) started to drop a bit.
By the end of the his Senior Season, I know many FBS schools including lower level Power 5 (Syracuse, Kansas, Indiana etc.) were still recruiting him (he went on official visits to both Syracuse and Kansas) Virtually all Group of 5 FBS schools listed above (Buffalo, ODU, Temple, Toledo, UCONN and UMASS) were still in the mix and recruiting him.
Whether it was his wanting to play right away and not redshirt, many of his St. Peter's teammates choosing and flourishing at HC, his wanting to compete for conference championships and national playoffs from Day 1 or ALL OF THE ABOVE. Coaches Ches, Vaganek and Co. saw the opportunity and pounced. He's a HUGE GET for our program! Now he just has to prove all those doubters wrong which will be more of a mental battle. His CB ball skills and overall athletic ability are some of the best I've ever seen for a HS to FCS recruit in my 20+ years of closely following the sport.

Great report midwestsader! I am really looking forward to seeing AP on the field for HC. I just love this pipeline to New Jersey in general and to St Peters in particular
Question: does HC, or other schools, make an effort to get the player's real height and weight during official visits? I'm guessing we don't ask the player to get on a scale (do we?) but certainly the photo sessions can help "Here, young man, let's get a photo of you next to coach X".....

I know HC attempts to get height and weight on all players they are interested in who attend junior days, and every player who attends their summer camps.

Is my memory off or did we have issues 3-5 years ago with DBs that were considered pretty good but too short to cover tall receivers and got beat with some regularity?
Then, probably purposely, we started getting players easily 6’+.
Not really making any judgment on this specific recruit because it sounds like he can jump like Luc does on the basketball team. I hope so anyway.🤞

Bucknell is a head scratcher. Western PA is FB country and Bucknell really supports it's BB teams. I assume FB attendance would zoom if they had a Chesney to build the program.

Tyree Blocker was one of the best cover corners ever to play at HC. At best 5’9”. It ain’t the height that matters it’s what’s in your chest.

I remember asking my dad about his recruitment as a college football player. "I got taken into the coach's office and he had me step on a scale" Guess they have to be a little more subtle about such things, eh?

It’s not surprising that this young man would say he was taller than he really is. It’s always been that way until you show up and the college coaches bring you in and weigh you and measure every part of your body. Don’t lie about your 40 time either because if you lie that will also come back to haunt you. Measurables should be taken with a grain of salt. Jake Dobbs at 6’1” isn’t playing at Holy Cross but that doesn’t matter to us because he is a super star in the FCS. The same will be the case with Avery Powell. In my humble opinion.

Redskins had a great DB who was 5’8 1/2 Darrell Green played like he was much bigger with a vertical of 41” numbers and analytics drive me nuts today, give me people that can make plays, know how to win and as I think 44 said have and play with heart

The Nittany Lions suck all the fanbase air out. Their stadium now holds 107,000 or so. When HC and PSU played decades ago, Fitton Field was nearly as large as Penn State's stadium at the time. Doubt that Bucknell has much of a local alumni base.

Small colleges like HC and Bucknell that feel a manifest destiny to be a national/international school has pluses and minuses.
