On today's Red Sox radio broadcast, Sean McDonough told long time play by play announcer Joe Castiglione, he had been busy calling the Alabama game on Saturday and asked how Joe's alma mater Colgate had done against BC. "They took home a big check" said Joe. Joe was in the Colgate President's box at Alumni Stadium. Maybe he'll go to Polar Park, too.
A few minutes later, discussion turns to the UConn upset and subsequent retirement of Edsall with Sean calling Bob Chesney a "rock star" and Joe giving a plug for Colgate- HC at Polar Park on Oct. 23.

According to an article posted on the Telegram's twitter page there will be three high school games played at Polar Park before the HC game including two early in the day on 10/23.
You'd think HC would get the priority and first use of field......

Why would they have high school games played in advance of the main attraction? With two earlier games, a sellout crowd arriving for main event, and the possibility of a less than desirable playing surface, I smell the possibility of a colossal $hite-show.

I will say the Woo PD was cordial on FF unlike in the past. Much more of a "umm, do you mind wrapping things up here and go into the game please?" Have the WooSox been getting crowds of 9K+ regularly? The game I went to was pretty packed but it was a Friday night in August...just curious how they've been dealing with pretty big crowds, parking etc logistically.

There are major logical flaws in this case, but it's not an unheard of practice. There have been high school games before minor league hockey games in Worcester. I think there have been Patriot League basketball games that were "opening acts" for Big East games

Apparently, gks was fed some bad info. (Maybe from one of the Fitton Field food trucks??) Sanity prevails. I just Googled "Polar Park High School football", and see that there will be two high school games played on Sunday - the day after we play. That makes MUCH more sense

Here's the complete article from today's Telegram:
St. Paul and Littleton will kick off high school football slate at Polar Park
Joe McDonald
Telegram & Gazette
WORCESTER — The WooSox want to create a new tradition, and it starts Oct. 24 when the team will host a pair of high school football games at Polar Park.
Final details have not been announced, but St. Paul High School will play Littleton High School in the first of two games at the home of the Worcester Red Sox. The high school games will be played the day after Holy Cross plays the first-ever college football game when it hosts Colgate Oct. 23 at Polar Park.
“We’re going to see how it goes and what we might be able to do next year, whether it’s expanding the football program, or playing different schools every year. Do we make a high school tradition out of it with St. Paul? It’s really in the early stages, but I know they’re really excited to play a game here,” said Hannah Butler, WooSox director of Polar Park events.
St. Paul's Colin Johnson and Tevin Mazyck celebrate a touchdown against Nipmuc in a game earlier this season.
The WooSox and St. Paul have a unique relationship. The school held the first private event when Polar Park hosted the junior and senior proms last spring.
“It’s nice to have them back for a football game,” Butler said.
Butler declined to say which schools would play in the second game, electing to let the schools make the announcement instead, but there is no shortage of big games slated for that weekend and they would certainly benefit from the Polar Park atmosphere. St. John's is scheduled to host Xaverian on Friday, Oct. 22, while four city schools are slated to face each other on Saturday, Oct. 23, as Doherty will play North and South will take on Burncoat.
The baseball games are done for the season at Polar Park, but that doesn't mean fans are done coming to watch games this year.
Polar Park will be a year-round venue and will hold more football games, along with concerts and other sporting events in the future. The ballpark will become the epicenter of entertainment in the Canal District.
“It’s incredibly important to connect with the community in this way and this is going to be the first of many high school sports we play at the ballpark,” Butler said. “We would love to one day host the (MIAA) baseball state championships. This is just the start and we’re super excited have football and get to play more than one game. It will definitely be exciting.”

St. Paul's High School has an interesting history. Holy Name High School (Amy O'Brien, Dwayne McClain and others) was located across from Crystal Park, near Clark U. and then moved to Granite Street. In 1963, Marian High School was a newly created all girl's high school. off of Grove Street. Then St. Peter's (Al Stazinski, Rich Gedman) merged with Marian, departing its south Worcester location. Last year it was announced that St. Peter - Marian was merging with Holy Name with the new name St. Paul Diocesan Jr./Sr. High School. on Granite Street.

The way the article was written they are implying that SJ/Xaverian and the city school will be playing there. If I read it wrong that's on me.

FYI: Rich Gedman did play for both St. Peter's (before the merger)and St. Peter-Marian (after the merger). The schools were merged in 1976. As for Al Stazinski.... Al did not go to or play for St. Peter's. Al was a standout basketball player for St. Mary's H.S. in Worcester. I know because we (St. Mary's C.C.H.S. in Milford, MA) scrimmaged them in basketball in the early '60's at their bandbox gym on Richland Street in Worcester. Their 1963-64 team was amazing in what they accomplished! www.telegram.com/article/20141006/NEWS/310069878

HCFC45 you are 100% correct. Substitute Phil O'Neil for Stazinski whose St. Mary's team was NE champs.

The way the article was written they are implying that SJ/Xaverian and the city school will be playing there. If I read it wrong that's on me. My read is that there is another game scheduled that Polar will not tell us because they want to let the schools make the announcement The reporter looked over the local schedule and was speculating that one of those three matchups would be potential candidates for the second game

Coached the Morris brothers (Joe, NYG) at Ayer and Billy Brooks (Bills) at Fram. North. I'm pretty sure he had a great ballplayer or two at SPM, too.

Have they sodded the dirt infield (as they do at Yankee Stadium) or will it look like the old days when you play on the dirt at times ?

They had AAA go longer than in a normal year because they started later. Not a bad idea around here given that it was a warmer than normal September.

Probably not enough time for the grass to settle in. Looks like the QBs can slide into second base. I always thought a gracious commercial during the World Series would be a Thank you video by the NFL with clips of all the baseball stadiums NFL and AFL teams played in to get their start. Clips like Jim Brown carrying all eleven defenders through the infield at Municipal Stadium. (The place built too close to the "ocean")

Remember the goal posts being on the goal line?
A good trivia question would be: which NFL franchises NEVER shared a stadium with a MLB team (in relation to one franchise, that would sort of be a trick question).

One down and 7 to go. Not talking about any one-off exhibition games, either. Pretty sure the Red Sox played a game in one such place.

Green Bay routinely played a couple of home games per year in Milwaukee until about 1995. Many of those games were played in County Stadium, the home field for the Braves and then the Brewers.

Oh, shoot, I forgot about that. Cross them off. 7 instead of 8. There's another franchise that has to be crossed off that's even trickier than that.
