Can't one argue that this league will actually help maintain the integrity of college athletics? In other words, those who purely wish to use college athletics as a springboard to the top leagues will simply choose another route that actually pays them in a transparent manner.

That is legitimate, but it also continues the total emphasis of hoops and dollars over academics. This league may fail, then the players not only lose the chance to play in college, but in high school also, possibly resulting in increased drop outs. Maybe some of them would have attended college and eventually graduated, even after becoming professionals. Just a continuation of skewed priorities.

Does playing (and prospering) in obscurity* against better competition really produce better athletes?
*no one gives a rat's behind about whatever "league" this will be, or the "G league" vis-a-vis the NCAA, with all its faults. And these kids never get to see who rises to the top competitively when there's thousands/millions watching and if you lose, you go home.

I think the effect on the playing ability for these participants is unknown at this point. While the following is also uncertain, I don't think the objective is to build this league as a market competitor to the NCAA. Obviously, the key will be for the organization to maintain its cash flows.

The level of obscurity of the G league may change if the national media begins to hype future Kobe Bryants and LeBron James in that league or this new league. It's safe to say there are no current G leaguers getting that type of attention. The one and done types go right to the NBA.

Fwiw, two of this year's top four projected draft picks - Jalen Green and Jonathan Kuminga - played in the G League this year instead of college. Had they gone to college, they would be getting massive attention. But in the G League, very little publicity.

Good to know. The G league gets so little publicity I hadn't noticed. For comparison, the city of Portland did not build a $154 million new building for the Maine Red Claws. They play in the 106 year old Portland Expo, same as Portland High School.

Green and Kuminga will not be hurt by playing in the G League they made $500K, had no interest in going to school and will still be top 5 picks in the draft. Only question is whether $500K is more than the going rate at the top power 5 conferences.

I much prefer the one-and-done(s) keeping their showcasing butts out of college hoops.

I don't mind their butts there either. I hope that the situation with media attention remains as it did for those 2 young men mentioned in one of the posts- that is, little or none.
