Looking at the webcam this morning as they cut down trees by Hogan, four students were headed up from Hogan toward Luth. Three of comparable height, one was a head taller than the others.

Where were the trees, on the side facing the lower campus? I can't for the life of me think of any trees on the other side.

Look at the Jo webcam now facing the upper parking lot and the Luth... there are 2 stumps on the bottom left of the webcam... saw the 2 trees being cut down this morning around 7:30 - 8:00am... they made quick work of them...

When do college athletes go home? Do they have time for a summer job to make a few bucks? The latter comment applies more so to student-athletes at a college like HC. Not so much for kids at big-time schools.

Holy Cross only started a summer session several years ago, and this year there are two summer sessions, the first session is already underway.

Even if you are on a full scholarship you still need some spending money and it isn't a bad thing to earn some in the summer. Kids at the big time schools may not have to worry about where the spending money comes from, unfortunately. I thought the summer sessions were limited in size and scope.

My daughter's in college. If she wanted to dedicate herself to a sport and was a good enough athlete; we'd have called her efforts her "job" (paying $70k a year) and paid for her spending money. We'd have considered it a very fair deal.

Kids at the big time schools may not have to worry about where the spending money comes from, unfortunately. I thought the summer sessions were limited in size and scope. IIRC, this is the third summer. A second session was added this summer for students who could not matriculate four courses per semester during the COVID semesters. IIRC, there is no tuition charge for these students. I have not heard what the enrollment is. _____________ My nephew played college hoops a few years ago. Before he even enrolled for freshman year, he commuted to campus during the summer to work out daily. His commuting partner was another incoming freshman on the football team (who eventually became the team captain). And there were days, when the hoops coach would bring him over to the court, and run drills, etc. A coach on the football team asked him to try-out for football, but he didn't. I narrate this because its long past the point where student athletes in a major, or even mid-major program, have summers to themselves. Over the course of four? summers before starting his junior year in high school, and after AAU season. my nephew did two overnight camps with Coach K, one camp at Clemson, and an invite-only camp at U of Texas. He did have the summer before his senior year in high school relatively free, no AAU and no camps. He had already committed. Even so, there were several New England schools encouraging him to take PG year at their school.

For what it's worth, the last two basketball players I knew well enough to have actual conversations with, both stayed in Worcester the summer before their senior year. One had a job at the school, the other one had a pretty nice resume-building job/internship at a local business. Both were from out of state so commuting was not really an option

Does the NCAA have a rule prohibiting D-1 athletes from holding jobs while on scholarship? I seem to remember a big article from SI many years back regarding athletes and jobs. One players job was to watch the grass grow on the football field and tell the groundskeeper when it was time to cut the grass..

Yes. Just have to report what the job is and the particulars to a school's compliance depart. Same as in-season.

I would certainly assume so. I can't imagine the two guys I mentioned above were working jobs in violation of NCAA rules. Especially since one of them worked for the school

There was a women's basketball player who graduated in 2020 and interned, presumably with pay, at Goldman Sachs? I assume that athletes who work at a coach's summer camps are being compensated, and they are not doing this simply to ingratiate themselves with the coach. Coach K had most/all? of his roster working at the two summer camps my nephew attended. He beat Jay Williams on a crossover dribble in a one on one when he was in 9th grade, Williams recovered and, as he was driving to the hoop, swatted the ball back into his face, bloodying his nose. Coach K & the whole Duke team signed the bloody camp t-shirt. My nephew was happier than a pig in sh*t.

I can imagine Williams being a little angry having to work that basketball camp for only $120 per hour

I can imagine Williams being a little angry having to work that basketball camp for only $120 per hour And to get beat by a 14 or 15 year old on a crossover! I recall being told he signed my nephew's sneakers afterward, and I'm pretty sure the sneakers are still in some closet at his parent's house. Blood treasure..

I’ve never seen this drill before. Seems like it could result in knee or back injuries.
