I like the idea that HC would have another facility that's BETTER than many schools.

Its rather obvious now that ADMB latched onto the idea of creating a single competition field for both lacrosse and soccer based on what BC did. These sport-specific Astroturf fields are used by Pitt, and Stanford, among others. www.astroturf.com/synthetic-turf-products/ligaturf-series-turf-soccer-field/_________ Back to the rink. IMO, a hard decision on the rink is probably 3-5 years down the road. First, ADMB is packaging $7-10M of new construction on top of the hill: new softball field; reconstructed soccer field with artificial turf, and doubling the seating; new restrooms; new concession stand; new press box; relocating sites of the field events; videoboard Probably to be staggered over two years. Nothing done on the rink until this is completed. Second, the new Jesuit residence, assuming this is on Avon or Kendig. This will be built in the next 2-3 years. ADMB will want to ensure that the road next to the rink can be slid to the west and not interfere with the new residence. Third, architects and consulting engineers study the rink in the next 1-2 years, and present options. Fourth, need to replace the rug on Fr. K field in the next 3-5 years. Don't know how long it will be before the field hockey field rug and the track will need to be replaced.

Any clue why the HC rink couldn't look similar to Ferris State?

Interesting idea- blow out the back walls and add seats, I assume. Roof does not have to be raised. This one is 2,493, HC's is 1,600. How many seats would adding the same number of rows as are on the sideline?

This idea is as old as the Testament...
Foley: the answer to your question is money. And further more to that...PRIORITIZED money. So far since the Hart renovation and many other capital projects on the Hill in the last 2 decades, money has not be prioritized to upgrade the rink. And until someone with the money stipulates that, it's going to to be a very hard sell to the institution and Board of Trustees.
Personally, I wouldn't spend x-million of dollars to make the Hart Centre look like Ferris State. More seats isn't the issue at Holy Cross -- the problem is an extremely outdated and plain rink that does nothing to compare to the buildings our competition play in. Recruits and their families want bells and whistles, many of which are not seen on the ice surface or in the stands. Think locker rooms and the "guts" of the building that most fans never see.
The eye test on that picture of the Ferris State rink surely doesn't do that for me.

Ferris State only plays men's ice hockey. So no need for locker rooms for a women's team. I suppose the opponents locker room could be a unisex locker room.
The HC rink footprint doesn't fit with the Ferris State model. HC has no space within the overall site footprint for seating at the ends of the rink.

The underneath of the Hart Center Rink is the worst I have seen in all the rinks I have been in from D-1 to D-3.

Honest question. I’m not a hockey expert, and want to understand what your getting at. Don’t all rinks have a similar base material that is painted and then a sheet of water is frozen on top?

If there is one thing HC does well it is maintenance. The century old buildings are all in good working order. I can't believe HC would let part of the physical plant deteriorate until it isn't functional or a code violation. The campus is the definition of professionally managed.
Regarding spending money on practice and training facilities over playing venues, that is where the need was. We weren't turning overflow crowds away at any HC arena or playing surface and still aren't.

Locker Rooms, hallways, etc....There is minimal space for visiting teams to set up their equipment for example the skate sharpening machine to the refs room basically being a large closet.

Spend an hour on Youtube searching for NCAA Hockey Locker Room tours. Many of the top D1 programs in the country have done videos showcasing their facilities. This will give you a very good idea of what myself and others are referring to when we mention the "guts" or "underneath" of a rink. Student-athletes spend upwards of 40 hours per week in the rink, many of which is in the locker room, video room, kitchen, player's lounge, and gym facilities. Conversely, they spend almost no time in the stands as a spectator.
