Agree with Dan that Erving should be offended, and so should Jack Leaman from high above.

I love the wisecracks on Twitter even though I have no problem with anyone dumping on Umass for the statue proposal. danshaughnessy.blogspot.com/

Maybe they should install the statues to Camby and Calipari, and then take them away!

This is embarrassing.
Even sadder that the last 25 years of UMASS basketball have been so mediocre that they feel that a vacated Final Four is all they have to hang their hat on.

Mediocre is a solid descriptor. But, over the last five years, UMass has been looking up at mediocre, at least in conference. They've gone 27-63. That's not Fordham-bad, but it's bad.

Well, how's an 8-40 record?

Well, how's an 8-40 record? Hopefully similar to a 3-28 score in the third quarter of a Superbowl.

While I obviously agree that honoring Calipari is craziness, I think Camby can be handled differently. UMass didn't vacate his career, right? Just the Final Four banner? He's clearly one of the most significant players in UMass hoops history.

If "both or none" I would hope they pick none.
If one can be separated, I would say go with a Camby statue. He was quite the ball player and he helped put UMass on the map for hoop fans.

He's clearly one of the most significant players in UMass hoops history. True. And the Knicks erred in trading him way too early. Was Camby involved in any of the NCAA violations that led to the vacated Final Four? If not, then absolutely he would be deserving of such an honor.

He was involved in those infractions He took jewelry, etc from an agent while he was playing, Thus he was a pro and their wins were forfeited. He may not be as bad as Calipari, but he was no innocent victim

Actually, wasn't Camby pretty much the focal point of the infractions?

I believe Camby paid Umass back the money they lost, just for the record.
Calipari didn't hit his stride as a legitimate cheater, if you will, until he got to Memphis. Before that, if he were John Wooden and a few others, his "lack of knowledge" of Camby's financial arrangements probably would have been an adequate defense.

And with the exception of Richard Pitino at Louisville, they always go hard on the Final Four losers and never on the winner. See Gilbert, Sam.
