Details to follow.

This has been looming for many years, and was inevitable.

This will escalate the arms race among the Power 5 schools--look for some very lucrative advertising deals for key star players.

Much like 22+ year-old athletes who make thousands and millions more than I do, soon, college-age athletes will do the same. They have an in-demand skill that the market will bear payment for, so how can I complain with that? The haves will beat the have-nots in college athletics, and we'll increasingly see the same 10-12 programs in each sport dominate the landscape.

So, now if we're in a recruiting battle over a kid, all HC has to do is "arrange" for the kid to do a 30 second radio spot for Duddie's Honest Used Car Sales for a million dollars

We could have sponsored athletic scholarships/stipends. "HC would like to introduce John Smith, our new Coney Island Hot Dogs/ Two For The Price Of One Every Monday nose tackle."

Important to note that this decision did not address compensation for name image and likeness. Nor did it go to whether an athlete may be compensated as a salaried employee.
The NCAA, or perhaps more accurately, the BCS is on cracking ice as it tries to sustain a business model where the costs and revenues, particularly salaries, of an athletic program are disproportionate to the salaries and expenses on the non-athletic side of a university/

Maybe New York Tech was ahead of the game in just dropping athletics altogether.

I disagree. Perhaps there will be a reduction in the # of administrators, coaches salaries, or facility spending, mostly at public and power 5 schools that receive the largest % of the $. This ruling is no different than the 3rd circuit ruling in Hart v. Electronic Arts, which along with Keller case established resulted in a national class action settlement and creation of a $60M fund for 22,000 athletes who’s image was used in the EA video game product without consent. EA was required to change their product, the NCAA was forced to change their rules and now a student in a EA Sport video game (or other product) can be compensated for the value of their image in that product. I expect the P5 schools will use this ruling to break away and form their own revenue sharing model without the burden of NCAA over sight. Smaller conferences like the PL will need to be more focused on revenue generating with an eye towards creating a marketplace for students to seek renumeration for their images. Students will have a voice in this process and change will be the norm.

Reduction in coaches salaries or facilities spending? John Wooden's largest salary was, in 2021 dollars, somewhere in the neighborhood of 150-200 K a year. He was underpaid vis-a-vis some contemporaries, but that number tells you all you need to know.
