Any comment on the talent or potential of this group for those who follow amateur hockey? How well does it represent the recruiting ability of our new coaches.

I hope they all stay four years, graduate and become great Crusader alumni whatever their skill level is.
Coach Riga will have the time he needs to improve the program the right way. Four years from now he will have all his own recruits and four years of D-1 head coaching experience. It will be very rewarding to watch if team performance steadily improves.

That's a lot of "ifs" and hopes. Fingers crossed . . . . . . and maybe Hockey East?

Apparently that requires a big check from someone for a facility upgrade, which doesn't seem to be a burden placed on other sports. But fields aren't as expensive as buildings.
Women's hockey took advantage of lower capacity facility requirements to join Hockey East for a smaller investment by HC. I don't see that as unfair but I guess an argument could be made that it is unfair to men's hockey. I don't recall any charges of unfairness when the women were in a D-3 league and shut out from any division NCAA tournament and the AHA had no women's division for them to move to D-1 in a more gradual leap in competition than straight to HE.

Liam Connors is a great forward and a workhorse. On the shorter side but great hustle, speed, and a good shot. Did really well for us in 4 years of prep including the last as a captain. He was a point per game guy his first 2 years and almost 2 points per game his junior and senior years. Originally committed to BU but I believe he was asked to play another year of juniors due to returning 5th year Covid starters. Reminds me of a Marchand or Brendan Gallagher.

The AJHL and NAHL sometimes have a few under the radar guys It will be interesting to see how many of these kids from the incoming class (1) have an impact in their HC careers, and (2) have a 4-year career at HC. As noted, very few impact players from the top-5 Jr Hockey leagues across N/America in recent years at HC. Riga has work to do. We know it, and he knows it. Time will tell.

I believe Thomas Gale was supposed to come last year but due to COVID pushed back his enrollment to this year as he had a year of junior eligibility left. And due to COVID, his junior season in Canada never got off the ground and was able to finish the season in the NCDC, where he was the top goaltender in that league the previous season. He should push both Gordon and Radomsky as they have been consistently inconsistent in their time at HC. John Gelatt had a pretty good year in the NAHL (8th leading scorer in the league and over a point per game). All of the incoming players were recruited by Berard and his staff. There are also 3 or 4 more verbal commitments for the following season from Berard but I don’t know their current status with Riga coming on board. 2 of those are playing for Brooks, the top team in the AJHL, one is playing in the BCHL (West Kelowna) next season and the 4th was a goalie who got some time in the USHL (Youngstown) this past season.

The upcoming season will provide an apples to apples comparison of Berard recruited players coached by Berard and staff vs Berard recruited players coached by Coach Riga and staff. Not that every variable can be made equal season to season, of course.

Hopefully he will do much, much better than Nelson did with Carmody's players. (I know, I know, he lost some of the "best" players even before the season started).

Both Nelson and Riga had similar career paths before being hired at HC when it was "their turn" to move up to head coach. You can't say each weren't well prepared but after our success with Coach Chesney I hope there will be future opportunities for other new coaches at HC that have proven they can turn one or more previous programs around as head honcho, not head assistant.

Those who can, do. Those who can’t, teach. Trust me, I didn’t make that up.

It comes from someone who probably didn't know a thing about teaching. After all, if you "can" teach, it is a good thing if you "do teach." (BTW, the third part of that old saw is "If you can't teach, then teach teachers.")
