Obviously, no one can defend or argue for Gilmore after losing 46-14 to Lehigh at home....it really isn't personal...he just isn't the right guy for HC football in 2016 imo....we need a "new guy"....who that it is, I have no idea...but if HC is serious about having a competitive football program, a lot of changes are needed. Just make this your signature so you don't have to keep posting the same message after each loss. And Milan Brown wasn't run out of town on this board? I've been saying Gilmore wasn't the right football coach for HC in the scholarship-era for 2 or 3 years now......the fact that I'm not backed up on this on this board is sad in the sense that no one cares about HC football anymore. If I don't say it here, who will??? No one cares about HC football anymore......

I know it's not 1986 anymore. I think you answered your own question. Speaking of 1986, the best thing about today was the free GL bobble head.

No, the best thing about yesterday's game was that when I asked the two female students passing out the bobble heads if they knew who Gordie Lockbaum was, one answered for both honestly but sheepishly that she had no idea and admitted that she had asked some people if they wanted a "Gordie Lockhart" bobble head doll. When I explained how he finished 5th and 3rd in Heisman Trophy awards, she had no clue what that meant either. She was apparently impressed when I explained that was for the best football player in the entire country and this was even more of a feat at the level of play Holy Cross plays at.
The worst part of the day, besides the final score; play of our team; and, oh yes, the weather; was that there appeared to be cartons and cartons of unopened bobble heads left over.

To say that no one cares about HC Football is an insulting comment not worth dignifying with a response.
There are many hundreds of alums who support the program in countless ways and given the depth of their support will continue to do so long into the future. These individuals are true and loyal Crusaders through and through. In the conversations and engagement I have with all of these alums, the topic of this board and the exchanges that go on here hardly ever comes up or if it does it is merely in passing.
I will tell you who does care about Holy Cross Football. Ed Murphy class of 1942, inaugural inductee into the Ring of Honor and captain of the team that beat BC 55-12. I had a fabulous chat with him and his son (Dave Murphy's brother '82) as they took their seats yesterday amidst the driving rainstorm that swept Fitton Field for the first half.
Ed Murphy, 95 years of age, cares.

I was one person who attended the game and did not accept a bobble head when it was offered to me. Why? What am I going to do with it, give it to my wife as a wedding anniversary present? As you know, the school also offers a gift to the season ticket holders. I am also one person who did not get my gift. Why? Again, What am I going to with it? To me, it's all junk. I like to keep a clean and orderly house. I don't need any junk piling up in my house.

Sitting Dublin airport last week watching HC vs Harvard, group of guys asked what I was watching. The guy with the ND hat on chatted with his buddy then asked me to remind him of the name of the HC player who nearly won the Heisman trophy back in the day

Yes, I put up a Christmas tree, but it is normally a table top, so a bobble head would be too big. However, I do have a Holy Cross Christmas ornament. Bobble heads are more for kids, which I do not have. If Holy Cross is going to pass out something at a game, a T-shirt would be ideal.

JMJ, so, no kids means no grandkids either. No neighbor kids to give to? I think this was a neat gift to honor perhaps the best all-around football player in Holy Cross history, and now a citizen of Worcester. Despite the fact that at least some of the current co-eds never heard of him! How 'bout next season they pass out Fr. K bobble heads?

At this level, don't underestimate the importance of "coaching continuity" . At Lehigh, they lost terrific coordinators like Gilmore and Checcini and there were times when it showed. When PL head coaches surround themselves with ace assistants, success follows. Tavani has been unable to replace Heffner, Farragalli and they went from champions to being unable to win since 2009. Quality assistants are recruiters and teachers. Look closely at the league's teams. I think you'd find that the better programs find a way to attract good talent, and hold on to it. Money is a problem because the dollars are set aside for the head coach, but not for quality th assistants.
Could this be an issue at Cross?

I would take 2 Fr. K bobbleheads!
I think the coordinator support and pay could be an issue. I got to know Rodgers a little bit as I had a bunch of friends on the team 2007-2011. Granted, his defenses were not lights out and left us tearing our hair out sometimes, but they were of the bend don't break model. Top talent like Richard Rodgers leave FCS quickly, I think

The reason we were able to get over the hump after three straight near misses and win that coveted Patriot League Championship and NCAA berth in 2009 was because of the defense Rodgers built. Our offenses were the most dangerous in 2007 and 2008 but the D was still improving and had difficulty stopping the run -- cases in point the "Mike McLeod Game" against Yale in '07 and the season finale against 'Gate in '08 in the snow. The secondary and line backing corps under Rodgers were unbelievable during our title year and the overall D came together to really "master the system" that year and into the following season.

Student lack of knowledge about past football stars -- even Gordie Lockbaum -- is not surprising. While at HC from 1963-67, the only two football stars of yesteryear whose names came to my mind were Sockalexis (mentioned in class by the English professor) and Bill Osmanski (largely because he was the coach when HC lost to BC 76-0). This lack of younger generation knowledge covers big names of all types. When teaching law students, I have to be careful about referring to yesterday's celebrities because nobody in the class knows who they are. Similarly, I recall one night back when my son was in law school and he walked in the room while an old movie starring Kirk Douglas was on the TV. When I said, "Look, there's Kirk Douglas when he was young," his response was "Who's Kirk Douglas?" When I said, "Michael Douglas's father," he answered, "Oh, the old guy," meaning Michael Douglas.

Let's face it......most unfortunately.......young, supposedly well educated, people today don't know a lot about things you would think they should know. It's shocking and depressing.
