It seems the general viewer interest level is very low here in the US. Despite broadcasts across several TV/Cable channels, streaming platforms, and abundant media news coverage. Perhaps a combo of covid, woke politics, time zone issues, and a lack of compelling storylines.
I do think here and there US viewers (niche sports and otherwise) will occasionally tune in and out as the Olympics progress. My neighbor watches dressage and I might tune in for a late round of men's and women's hoops. But I'm thinking far less than in the past.
Even the host country itself seems a bit put off by the spectacle. More than in the past. One can imagine, on top of the other issues, there could be a serious negative economic impact on Japan.
The Beijing Winter Olympics starting February 4, 2022 could turn out to be another snooze fest (although I could see a cancellation/boycott if the Covid origin investigations don't go China's way).

I am enjoying the broadcasts - once find them. There does not seem to be a single place to see the location of broadcasts as there has been in the past. Also, the olympic feed (o. channel 225 here) shows some events - but the narration and interviews in Japanese are not really helpful.

No live telecast of the US France basketball game this morning. Horrible. I’m watching live. USA about to lose to France after losing to Nigeria and Australia in exhibitions. Can’t wait for Popovich’s press conference meltdown. What will the excuse be tonight?

Maybe I am wrong, but didn't the USA men defeat France 83-76? Olympic site initially had the score reversed. It has been corrected.

I watched the UFC yesterday instead of the Olympics. Japan may be the last Democracy to drop billions on the games. France has the summer games in three years I believe so it will be interesting if they cut back on spending. When Boston was looking at bidding on the (2028?) games a few years ago, I thought using empty college dorm space (including out to Worcester and Amherst if necessary) in the summer to house the athletes and existing college and pro facilities for the events made the most sense with little new building.
Now colleges like HC are more and more monetizing the summer months which is sensible so there are less empty dorms but that could be adjusted for one summer.
An Autocracy like China or Russia can go all out but I sense Democracies will be less inclined.

I think you are right. I doubt Japan will be getting any of the money from "tourists" that usually accompanies Olympic Games. In the past there were always predictions of huge amounts from that source and in the future it is doubtful it will play much of a role when cities decide on whether or not to host the games (PS: Those glowing predictions typically fell far short.).

/\ The empty arenas in Japan no doubt are a huge financial hit…plus it even dulls the game for TV viewers. (I’m thinking soccer but it applies to all games.)
On another front, our next hoops game is v Iran on Wednesday. I’m assuming that’ll be an easy win for our team.

There definitely seems to be an element of "figuring out how to watch it" in these first few days. And it's a lot more difficult if you don't have Peacock. Interesting take on how the calculus/measurement of success for broadcasters has changed. It isn't (just) about ratings: www.cnn.com/2021/07/23/media/olympics-tv-ratings-nbc/index.html

Re: Olympics--nice article in the Courier-Journal yesterday about Kenny Davis from Georgetown College who captained the US 1972 Us Olympics Men's Basketball Team.. Many will recall how the team was cheated out of the Gold Medal by corrupt judges/referees. The team did not accept the Silver medal in 1972 and has refused to do so ever since. In fact Kenny Davis has included in his will a provision that his heirs may not ever accept the Silver Medal.

I remember they are going to replay the last few seconds for as many times was possible for the USA to be defeated. They got that they wanted. It ranks up there for poor sportsmanship with the UCLA refusal to play for 3rd in the NCAA (as was done then) after losing in the semis.

It ranks up there for poor sportsmanship with the UCLA refusal to play for 3rd in the NCAA (as was done then) after losing in the semis. That never happened. After losing a double OT game to NC State (David Thompson) in the 1974 semis, Walton and his teammates did not want to play the consolation game (few players ever did), but they were told by Wooden that was not an option. They played the game with little effort but still beat Kansas easily. Over the years, UCLA was also in a few other third place games, which they always played.

Can’t say I’m particularly interested in these Olympics for a numbers of reasons. It’s kind of on in the background but certainly not must-see TV for me as it might have been in the past.

I watched USA and Argentina women's indoor volleyball last night live from Tokyo around 10:15pm. It was not on USA TV network.
