Great 5th Gold for Sue Bird and Diana Taurasi- may never be broken in hoops. Terrific gold medal game by Stephanie Greiner, 30 points, Aja Wilson, 19, and Breanna Stewart, 14 rebounds, 14 points. I stayed up to watch that last night. Taurasi hasn't gotten enough PR for her professional and international accomplishments IMO -- she is an iconic athlete no doubt. But for whatever reason Two things: 1) I thought it was REALLY cool that Japan managed to put a basketball team in an Olympic gold medal game. 2) Megan Rapinoe finagling her way into the arena via a press pass to see her wife win her 5th was an amazing moment. It's absolutely bananas that there would be any red tape whatsoever as far as Olympic athletes being able to attend other events and support their countrymen, or friends from other countries. Remember these are virtually EMPTY arenas originally intended to seat thousands of fans. I think Rapinoe getting a NBC press pass is crazy and wrong. Press passes are supposed to be for working media. Not for a spouse. On top of that Rapinoe has been traveling throughout Japan playing games. The rules were athletes were allowed to attend their own sport so basketball players only in the basketball arena, handball in handball etc.

Somehow the men’s hoops team was in the arena also. Also many, many Japanese staffers were there who were available since almost all other events were obpver.

With just a few events to finish Medals USA 38-39-33= 110 China 38-31-18= 87 US Women are about to wrap up the Gold Medal in Volleyball I read an interesting article in the WSJ about China's approach to the Olympics. The approach is simple: they want gold medals. They will spend any amount of money to develop their athletes. They scout young children looking for potential star athletes and then place them in intense programs to develop them. They also focus on a small number of events they think they can excel in, e.g diving. Over the years 75% of their gold medals have been won in a small number of selected events. Yes--that system is quite different from the USAS and many other countries where kids end up in a sport because they enjoy it and are good at it. Who would have ever thought that China would develop Olympic class sprinters but the system worked

Im happy she was able to cut through the senseless red tape and wish more athletes had been able to more thoroughly enjoy what in many cases is a once in a lifetime experience of repping your country at the Olympic Games.

Again, you were allowed to attend your own sport. The reason for the rules was to limit cross contamination between sports which clearly Rapinoe was able to do kissing her fiancée after the game. This isn't a Rapinoe thing but more why was NBC willing to assist her by getting her a media pass? The same deal with Yahoo and Pat Forde getting into the swimming competition to watch his daughter.

As I understand it, there are sports and events Swimming is a sport in the Olympics. women's Freestyle, men's butterfly,, medleys, various distances, etc, are all events in the single sport of swimming

That is a good distinction. I do like that sports are treated as a single entity, not separated by the gender of the athletes.

Wonderful story. A few details were left out. The couple married in a small ceremony atop their downtown Seattle Condominium. Neighbor and close friend Dr. Fraser Crane was the best man. This parenting technique is a positive breakthrough as long as all four parties, the two mothers, the surrogate and the sperm donor (not mentioned in the article) are in agreement and it is privately funded or with WNBA employee benefits such as in this case. It also gives women the same physical ease of being a parent that men have always enjoyed, although in this case the surrogate has the physical burden for a fee. I can think of potential pitfalls and ethical questions and a slight realization that men are becoming less essential, but Congratulations Breanna!

Car racing is an Olympic sport now? If not, who cares. Just interesting that another international event in two months was canceled over COVID but they made sure the Olympics and ParaOlympics were played.

Cancelling the Olympics would have cost Japan big time. A car race? Not so much.

Carli Lloyd announced her retirement from the women’s national soccer team and sport. An all time great, she was not a fan of the activist gestures pushed by one of the national team members.
