Thank you hcpride for confirming everything that was in my post. So, what was your point?

One of the roster-related reasons for our second consecutive very disappointing women’s Olympic soccer performance is the fact that we had nearly a dozen players on the roster age 30 or more (some with very impressive and long resumes). In the one- sided 3-0 debacle v Sweden we were looking slow-footed the entire game. That sort of thing might work v Mexico (I was at the second Hartford game) and even Australia but not the top flight teams.
One can take it to the bank we’ll see a complete roster overall in short order.
On another front, our men’s hoops is going for a 4th straight gold (v France). No doubt the US team and fans will be be very disappointed if we don’t win (even though France is good, silver is ok, to be there is an honor, yada, yada, yada,).

Politics aside, it's a classic case, to paraphrase Branch Rickey; of trading players a year too late rather than a year too soon. Happens a lot, especially when the players are popular. What's different, perhaps, is unlike most of the US pro team sports, salaries don't really affect roster decisions. Also since US Soccer has them as full-time employees with benefits and severance packages, you got to wonder if they kept the older players around due to that.

Nelly Korda of USA won the Gold Medal in women's golf
Medal Count--don't know how much of today's activity is included
CHINA 37-32-17= 81 total medals
USA 31-36-32= 100 total medals
Am I correct in saying that taking Gold in team events (Basketball, team gymnastics, volleyball, etc) counts as 1 Gold Medal, the same as an individual event (65 KG Kumite, 100 Meter Butterfly, etc)?

Men’s hoops got their 4 consecutive Olympic gold. Our women are heavily favored and are going for their seventh (!) straight (v Japan).

Americans win both men and women’s 4x 400. Alyson Felix earns her 11th Olympic medal. Rai Benjamin, who was second in the 400 hurdles in an epic race, gets a gold as anchor.

What an interesting and star-studded women’s 4x400 lineup: Sydney McLaughlin (Gold 400H) Allyson Felix (All time T&F Medal Winner). Dalilah Muhammad (Silver 400 H). Athing Mu (Gold 800) . Our 7th straight 4 x400 Olympic Gold in the women’s event.

Durant led the US in the first three quarters with 27 points. Then his teammates forgot about him, and I believe he had one or no field goal attempts in the fourth. His two free throws clinched it.

US has 39 Gold, and a total of 112 medals to lead in both categories. Appears to have been a very successful Olympics for.....USA.
And yes, I have watched and enjoyed. Now Looking forward to 2024.
Hoping soon, that another HC alum (s) will be selected to represent, participate and ultimately win a medal 🏅.

Great 5th Gold for Sue Bird and Diana Taurasi- may never be broken in hoops. Terrific gold medal game by Brittney Greiner, 30 points, Aja Wilson, 19, and Breanna Stewart, 14 rebounds, 14 points.

Great 5th Gold for Sue Bird and Diana Taurasi- may never be broken in hoops. Terrific gold medal game by Stephanie Greiner, 30 points, Aja Wilson, 19, and Breanna Stewart, 14 rebounds, 14 points. I stayed up to watch that last night. Taurasi hasn't gotten enough PR for her professional and international accomplishments IMO -- she is an iconic athlete no doubt. But for whatever reason Two things: 1) I thought it was REALLY cool that Japan managed to put a basketball team in an Olympic gold medal game. 2) Megan Rapinoe finagling her way into the arena via a press pass to see her wife win her 5th was an amazing moment. It's absolutely bananas that there would be any red tape whatsoever as far as Olympic athletes being able to attend other events and support their countrymen, or friends from other countries. Remember these are virtually EMPTY arenas originally intended to seat thousands of fans.

Agree 100%. Enjoyed watching these Olympics tremendously. Japan's team played great (tallest player 6'1"). Two minor corrections: Brittney, not Stephanie; fiance, not wife (yet).

With just a few events to finish Medals USA 38-39-33= 110 China 38-31-18= 87 US Women are about to wrap up the Gold Medal in Volleyball I read an interesting article in the WSJ about China's approach to the Olympics. The approach is simple: they want gold medals. They will spend any amount of money to develop their athletes. They scout young children looking for potential star athletes and then place them in intense programs to develop them. They also focus on a small number of events they think they can excel in, e.g diving. Over the years 75% of their gold medals have been won in a small number of selected events.

Sounds very similar the strategy, hopefully without the peds, of the USSR and some satellites, most notably, East Germany.
