Sale pitched today at Polar Park (five innings. 81 pitches) before a packed house. He wore a Worcester uniform and ballcap in case you're interested.

www.telegram.com/story/news/2021/07/28/chris-sale-polar-park-worcester-red-sox-doug-flutie-vermont-syracuse/5397165001/Most famous, according to the writer, sporting events in Worcester. I can't buy into a rehab start by anyone as being famous, if that's the case then Ted Williams' first NE appearance in a Red Sox uniform should qualify as well. If you can't read it, it includes 2 fights, 2 Ryder Cups, an Evel Knevel jump, Flutie's game against HC the day he won the Heisman, Umass beating Syracuse in NCAA basketball; and Vermont doing the same. So, in terms of teams, the Orange get mentioned more than the Crusaders, 2 to 1. Fitton Field gets 2 mentions, one for the Flutie game and one for Evel Knevel's jump.

The writer did not think it was the most famous, but he did think it might have been one of the most famous and that is ridiculous. Not even in the top 100. I'm beginning to regret creating this thread.

I was at the Flutie and Vermont games. Exiting the NCAA game Syracuse fans were selling their tickets for the next game against Michigan State to Vermont fans who wanted them for friends. it was also nice to see Calhoun and UConn get booted that weekend. I remember he had some whine about UConn's hotel site being far away or something. The NCAA should have made them commute from Storrs.

I'm beginning to regret creating this thread. No mention of the 1st ever perfect game in MLB history? Took place in Worcester in the late 19th century when the city had a team in the National League. Takes the cake over a rehab start IMHO.

While a Polar Park sellout of 9,508, it is still some 2,300 less than the highest attendance ever at McCoy Stadium in Pawtucket - 11,802 on September 5, 2004. 9,508 was just an ordinary weekend gate for games during the later Mondor ownership years in Pawtucket. The PawSox actually AVERAGED (9,561) more than yesterday's Polar Park crowd for an entire 72 game slate back in the 2005 season.

The taxpayers of Pawtucket and RI are however not on the hook for well over $100 million in public funding.

Just slightly paraphrasing the great Everett Dirksen:
"A billion here, a billion there, and pretty soon you're talking about real money."

He was speaking of "millions" back then, but today it would be "billions" to update the thinking to today's dollars.

Speaking of billions, it costs almost that much to buy a pizza at Polar Park ($38!). And it's Wonder Bar pizza, courtesy of the Shrewsbury St. restaurant that my family owned for nearly 100 years.

Sale has one more rehab start and then his near term path will be decided. I hope Worcester gets it instead of Portland. Worcester has more debt to pay off.

Unless it's not going to happen until the 10th, I'm afraid he'll be traveling to the home of Dunder Mifflin, Scranton PA. Both AAA and AA teams are on the road all week.
Portland's at Binghamton, NY; I have a feeling it's easier to fly to Scranton.

Sale was quoted in the newspaper as saying he was looking forward to the bus trip to PA. Food's on him.
