Lions WR Quintez Cephus will miss an extended period of time with a broken collarbone. He had been starting alongside Kalif.

timholycross 1957…I know because I’m the longest suffering Detroit Lions fan with my first memory of the Lions coming in July or August of 1958 where the Lions, as the previous season’s NFL champs, lost the long-time season opening exhibition game to the College All-Stars at Soldier Field in Chicago. Any Lions fan older than me remembers NFL titles in 1952,1953 and 1957 and anyone younger has not lived through the full 63 years of pain since that last title (with that loss to the College All Stars, the loss to the Ravens 3 weeks ago and today’s game with the Vikings being quintessential examples). Consider the following: 1) The Lions have one playoff win in the last 63 years. I believe that is the fewest number of playoff wins of any franchise in the 4 major sports in that same time period, including expansion teams. 2) The Lions have had at least 5 players or coaches die while they were on the active roster, including Chuck Hughes who died during a game at Tiger Stadium and Eric Andolsek who was run over by a truck while mowing his lawn in the summer of 1992. 3) The Tampa Bay Buccaneers have won the division in which the Lions participate more recently than the Lions even though they have not been in the division for the last 19 or 20 years. 4) As of 3 weeks ago, there have been 25 successful FGs in the NFL of 60 yards or more. 7 of those 25 have been game winners. 3 of those 7 have come against the Lions including 2 that were the NFL record for the longest successful FG at the time made and none of the 25 were made by Lions kickers even though one of the few Lions bright spots has been their FG kickers with Eddie Murray, Jason Hanson and Mike Prater handling FGs for 40 of the last 42 years. Need I say more. Kalif will be the only bright spot for me this year as the Lions plod through another rough year. I always liked them too. Remember they kicked Green Bay's butt in 61 or 62 on Thanksgiving Day, ruining an undefeated season (only game they ended up losing). I always pay attention when they get off to a good start, which happens less and less, it seems

1962 Lions won 26-14 with double digit sacks. Lions were 11-3 that year. Lost early in the year at GB 9-7 after having a 7-6 lead with the ball in GB territory and about 1:40 to go in the game when Milt Plum threw an interception on a third down pass which Herb Adderley ran back deep into Lion territory and Paul Hornung kicked the game winning FG. If Lions don’t turn it over, Yale Lary, all pro safety and punter would have pinned GB deep in their territory with the likelihood of a game winning drive very slim. After the game, Alex Karras was so ticked off with Plum that he fired his helmet at him in the locker room. That loss was one of the first in a long series of painful Lions’ losses in which they have snatched defeat from the jaws of victory. Other 2 losses in 1962 were 17-14 to the Giants and 3-0 to the Bears after GB clinched. Three losses by 8 points. Uggh😕.

From today’s The Athletic
. The most experienced WR left on the active roster is Kalif Raymond, with 33 career catches (14 this season).

From The Athletic about last week’s game
The second third-quarter possession, again down just a touchdown, was a three-and-out highlighted by a missed shot opportunity from Goff. Kalif Raymond had the defensive back turned around and if the ball is thrown with enough depth over the top, it’s a touchdown. Instead, the ball died and was nearly picked

Jared Goff ranks 27th in the NFL at 6.6 yards per attempt. Not ideal for Kalif’s game.

First half: Cincy 10 Lions 0. Kalif with 4 catches in 5 targets for 20 yds. (no drops). 3 punt returns for 25 yds. So far the most productive player for the Leos today. Hopefully, he’ll have a 2 TD second half like he did two weeks ago.

Can goff play the position (does he have the arm strength), or are his options limited due to time and general quality of receivers?

efg72 Goff is limited by lack of mobility and inaccuracy when under pressure. The Lions’ offensive line injuries (two Pro Bowlers [Decker and Ragnow] on IR) and generally weak and inexperienced receiving corps don’t help. He’d probably be OK with a decent team (think the Rams in 2018) but is dramatically weaker with a bad team.
BTW, Kalif had two more catches on two targets in the second half—6 catches on 7 targets for the game and 3 punt returns for 25 yds. I believe he has started all 6 games and I would think his performance is likely to leave him with a spot on the team for the rest of this season and, hopefully, 2022 even if free agency or the 2022 draft bring in a bunch of new receivers.

Kalif is their #1 WR at the moment. Even when fully healthy, he’s no worse than third. There is zero risk he doesn’t finish the season on the team absent injury.

Kalif is at the point in his NFL career that even if the Lions were dumb enough to cut him he'd get plenty of looks across the league. He's not too expensive and has shown he can produce.

Having seen the NY Giants today, they could use him (as an alternate to Shepard). Of courser with their QB unable to throw a pass - possibly still feeling optical issue related to his concussion?

We ran into Kalif at Fitton right after he got cut by the Giants a few years ago. My kids were complaining about the Giants cutting him and Kalif said “That’s some bad juju.” The Giants have been epically bad since that comment. My kids now believe there may be a Kalif curse on the Giants. There might be something to it.

hc92 Some very interesting stats. Tough to judge the amount of separation while watching the games but I did not sense that Kalif was as much of a positive outlier as the stats (at least for the Cincy game) indicate. It may be that much of this “separation edge” goes for naught because he’s not targeted or because Goff doesn’t have the protection necessary to throw downfield where Kalif’s greatest separation may occur.

Not sure what anyone else thinks and perhaps not the greatest choice but I'd rather see Kalif playing regularly for a not-very-good team than sitting on the bench or a practice team on a much better team or, worse still, not being on any NFL team.

I thought that Domenic Cozier had a real chance in the NFL having similar speed and probably stronger than Kalif. However, Dom is doing well as a Commercial Account Executive at Dell EMC. I didn't catch up with him at the Georgetown game but he indicated to me that he was there.

Agree…and particularly for a team where I have the opportunity to see all of the games (without purchasing the NFL Sunday Ticket 😊)

Kalif just had back to back catches Total of 4 for 60 yards, long of 20 was just going to type the same--he was not heavily involved early but is making his presence felt now. He also has one carry for one yard
