We think he is great and don't want to lose him, but until we win 9-10 games a year and go deep in the playoffs I think he stays at HC. Unless of course we don't compensate all the coaches fairly.
So I think he is a few years of playoff wins away from moving to a higher level opportunity. The fact he is recruiting nationally will help expand the list, but my guess is most future options will be in the Mid-Atlantic and Northeast regions followed by some in the midwest.

I did not see this and still do not see this on any Chesney retweet. With Chesney's offensive acumen, he would get absolutely dominated at the FBS level. That could be true or it could be that he has so far been hamstrung with quarterbacks with limited skills or limited opportunity to develop them and he has worked around that to still win two championships in a row. He has all his recruits at QB now and a full camp. Let's see what happens as his recruits gain playing experience.

Perhaps Mr. Foley could give us a grade for the Chesney offense at Assumption after he had his recruits in place.

Let's look at his record for offense at Assumption--actually I'll just check scoring and admit some could come from defensive touchdowns Pre Chesney 2010= 24.4 points per game 2011= 25.1 2012= 26.8 3 Year average= 25.5 points scored per game
Chesney Teams at Assumption 2013= 27.0 = +1.5 vs prior average 2014= 26.8 = +1.3 2015= 39.2 = +13.7 2016= 37.2 = +11.7 2017=43.4= + 17.9 yeah, I know-- that's D-2 and it's a completely different game than D-1 football Let's see what he does in his 4th year at HC. My concern is not scoring a lot of points but, rather, scoring more than the opponent

If HC wins one of the games vs UConn, Monmouth or a first round FCS opponent while winning the PL again it will be a positive step forward. Nobody currently higher ranked is going to lay down for us. If we beat them it will be a great accomplishment.

1- 60 pounds of muscle ?? Wow! Very impressive for both Benton and the training staff. 2- his decision to play his 5th year at HC and not somewhere else, as some have, may set an example for players who also have that option the next three years Thanks for posting

I really like this part:
“He’s just going to dominate this year,” Pucko said. “That’s the bottom line. He’s going to play UConn, Monmouth, Harvard, Yale — teams that have great offensive linemen. NFL scouts will see what they need and we just expect great things from him this year.”

Football is conducive for a fifth year at HC with just one semester having to be skipped. HC should consider giving these athletes and other students who complete their studies after a fall semester access to their degree in December if they want to graduate then so they can take any job that requires a degree or start grad school. Just another small way for HC to stop being your father's Oldsmobile without harming anyone. Some traditions, like only granting degrees once a year actually help people by being ended. If that tradition has already ended I stand corrected.

Benton was a standout wrestler in high school. Those techniques developed in his early years are certainly very helpful as he navigates his way along the line of scrimmage and into opposing backfields.
Major props also need to go to Crusader Dakota Allosso's (2011) Dad who coached Benton at Minnechaug Regional in western MA and was integral in his coming to the Cross.

Last week I shared some thoughts and a brief outlook on our offensive personnel/things to watch coming out of camp (page 1 of this thread). How about what many of us think might be the best Defense to take the field since the HC teams of the late 80’s/early 90’s…I don’t not think it is hyperbolic to say this Defense has the potential to be one of the Top 20 units in FCS this year. Here’s a breakdown by position:
Defensive Line: We start with the best defensive end duo in the PL in Seniors Benton Whitley (5th year) and Dan Kuznetsov. Both will be 3 year starters and are extremely strong, explosive and play with relentless pursuit. They should be a nightmare off the edge for offenses. Top reserve SR. DE Jake Reichwein also returns after stepping up this spring with lots of playing time and solid production. The big question at DE is the health of JR Thomas Kiessling. He did not play due to injury in the Spring but showed huge potential as a freshman in 2019 especially in games at Navy and Syracuse. If he is still unable to play, expect an underclassman to crack the 2-deep and see a good amount of playing time. On the interior, SR DT Jason Modak returns after starting the last two seasons. One of the two SRs to graduate was our other DT starter in the Spring (Jordan Jackson) and that spot will be filled by Seniors Noah Johnson (5th year) and Matt Cedeno. Both have quality experience and I expect Johnson to be the starter. Like DE, I expect an underclassman to emerge as the 4th DT in the rotation which will be needed as we rotate a good amount on the interior.
Linebacker: Again, our 2 LB’s in HC’s 4-2-5 defense are potentially the best duo in the PL. What can we say about Jacob Dobbs except he has a chance to be the best LB to play at HC since??…(maybe Rob McGovern?) God willing he stays healthy his JR and SR years and continues his progress centered on unparalleled work ethic. SR Liam Anderson started this spring and came on huge after playing primarily on passing downs as the top Reserve in 2019. He’s an excellent all-around athlete and runs nearly as well as Dobbs. SR Liam Doran returns after being the starter in 2019 but missing most of the 2020 Spring season due to a shoulder injury. He’s bigger and more of a pure run stopper than Anderson so look for him to play on certain downs and distances. We also played all 3 in the SDSU game when we switched to a 4-3 front to help against the run. Soph Dante Bolden likely rounds out the 2-deep after stepping up huge as Freshman in the Fordham game when Anderson went down with an injury on the first play of the game…talk about baptism by fire against a premier offense and Dante a did great for his first collegiate game.
Defensive Backs: We have two ball hawks returning at Cornerback in Senior John Smith (one of the top in the league) and JR Devin Haskins. Smith has the skill set to get some looks for NFL camps and Haskins has phenomenal size (6’2 with long arms) and range. Top Reserve at CB is likely Soph Terrence Spence who literally changed the trajectory of the Fordham game with his blocked punt for a TD. He’s also got good size and speed. 2 of our 3 safeties/nickel backs return starting with Spring Captain and 5th year Senior Grant Holloman. Grant primarily played CB his first 3 years but looked to find a home and be more comfortable at his safety position. SR Free Safety Walter Reynolds returns after also converting from CB after his Soph year. For what each might lack in size, they play fast and are very athletic. The only other Spring Starter not returning is Joe Lang and I expect SR. Safety Terrell Prince to step up this year after having a fantastic sophomore season on both special teams and safety in 2019. However, he didn’t play as much this spring. The top 2 reserves at Safety are likely JR Hunter Burns and SR Cristos Argys.
Hopefully this facilitates some good dialogue about what you are watching. Barring injuries, we should be much more excited than concerned right now!

Soph Dante Bolden likely rounds out the 2-deep after stepping up huge as Freshman in the Fordham game when Anderson went down with an injury on the first play of the game…talk about baptism by fire against a premier offense and Dante did great for his first collegiate game. While we have athletic playmakers, I am concerned that the better FCS teams will look to exploit our smaller DBs by turning to the power run game and two TE sets. While I don’t see that style of play from most of the other PL teams, the stronger FCS schools can and should be able to pound the rock, especially when our base defense typically uses only 2 true LBs.

Great analysis. I agree with hc2020 with more power teams you need larger DBs in the box like Rivers or Burns to stop the run. But honestly - what we saw against Fordham overall concerns me more. HC has to either cover better against the pass or get way more pressure.
They have to mix personnel get better against diverse teams. The way teams chuck it now they definitely have to cover better. Fordham wasn’t pretty in any way.

Both very valid observations by dharry and hc2020. Having been at the SDSU game, the Jacks used their massive O-line and two big TE’s to establish the run with two great RB’s. That then set up the play action pass. Our defense did a respectable jobs at times against the run (Dobbs was all over the field) but both of SDSU’s long 30+ Yard runs came from a DB missing their “fit” or a tackle in the open field. Now, SDSU was the best team in FCS (yes they would have beat SHSU and won the National title if their starting QB didn’t get hurt the first series of the game and yet they still almost won relying solely on their running game but I digress.) Like I mentioned in my analysis, I wonder if we play more base 4-3 against run oriented teams as we started doing in that game with Dobbs as the Mike LB, Doran at SLB and Anderson at WLB. Prince (as a bigger safety) has shown an ability to play well against the run.
As to the Fordham game, I don’t care how good/athletic our DB’s are, asking anyone to cover those receivers with DeMorat slinging it for more than 4 seconds is a huge ask. Hopefully, with our front 4 we can get some pressure at least off the edge but with the O-line’s we are going to face (mentioned in the Whitley article), Coach James is going have to dial up some dynamic blitz packages. The Fordham game felt like the issue was a lack of pressure on DeMorat as the main culprit of the Yards our D gave up that day.

I am looking forward to more blocked kicks and long field goals from special teams. That's the extent of my analysis other than any aspect that relies on effort and discipline seems to be a plus under Coach Chesney. We're lucky to have plus level skill in Ng to go along with that.

Sure. Special Teams pretty straightforward as far as the specialists (not in a position to share our punt block schemes haha) Kicker - Ng = Stud with NFL potential Punter - Haughney = Pre-season All PL Punt Returner - I think they are going to start with Ayir back there. Kick Returners - Tyler Purdy as the primary KR joined along side TBD. Could be an upper classman with experience like John Smith or maybe some underclassman get a shot like WR’s Quinton Gregory or Justin Shorter.

We have the answer to that, don't we..... Thanks to your research, yes. But Foley covered some of those games and I believe he said Cheney used two quarterbacks at times so perhaps he can flesh it out. I think I shot three games and at least two of them saw Chesney use two quarterbacks and a third game saw him use three. None of these QB's got injured as they were just situational moves. This was a loss to Bentley (game meant nothing because AC already won the auto bid) Here is the first pic I have archived from the game of the AC QB (Monks was the name) who was a captain not starting. Note he started the game I did the previous year. First pic is of number 9 in the game who played most of it. www.foley-photography.com/Football/College-Football/2017-Season/Bentley-at-Assumption-College/i-d8j57Mk/ANumber 18 in now www.foley-photography.com/Football/College-Football/2017-Season/Bentley-at-Assumption-College/i-w4spdtT/AWas it because the game didn't mean anything? Was the kid injured? But he clearly had a package ready for number 18 in the red zone. Number 9 ended up starting the season opener the next season which I shot.
