Yikes. She had a couple of years left on her contract. Voluntary or “asked for”? I wonder where we’ll see her next?

Why not spend most of the bs "national search" money on the next coach's salary, if that's the issue.

If they really plan to make an investment in an authentic softball facility, this is the time to step up and find a better coach - Jen had her crack at improving the program and simply didn’t get it done - our .202 team batting average (281st in the country) last season was embarrassing

Why not spend most of the bs "national search" money on the next coach's salary, if that's the issue. Excellent idea. Hopefully "national search" means they will accept applications from anywhere in the country, not spending tens of thousands on a national search firm. The new men's hockey coach was found two hours away, the women's lacrosse coach was found an hour and a half away, the women's hockey coach an hour away and the football coach a WRTA bus ride away. Keeping the search in house like was done when hiring Coach Riga will keep our Athletic Department leadership more in touch with what's going on in the coaching industry and they will actually learn good ideas from other schools in their interviews.

They can transfer freely for this upcoming season so could they lose Nelson to another program?

It is behind a paywall.

I had the pleasure of meeting Jen at the CAF outing in June in RI. Seems odd that she would participate in a fund raising event if she had one foot out the door. She certainly seemed like an enthusiastic young coach, and I wish her well wherever she lands.

If it was the school’s decision, I doubt if Jen knew in June the school was planning to get rid of her. .

A quick google search shows an article by Softball America with Nelson in the transfer portal. It is behind a paywall. Same source shows Bengston is in the portal too. While entering the portal doesn’t guarantee they’ll transfer, to lose two seniors, and your #1 battery to boot, will make the new coach’s job that much tougher in the near term.

If they transfer now they get two years elsewhere...perhaps with a team that can hit. And, for the program, it falls into the idea "we finished last with you and we can finish last without you." It will, however, let the new head coach to get a fresh start with some new talent added (hopefully).

I swear, rjs, I was going to cite Branch Rickey's famous quote, often mentioned by Ralph Kiner, the recipient, during Mets telecasts.
Kiner had some beauties of his own; e.g. (on Mothers' Day): "For all you Mothers out there, Happy Birthday!"

I have a radical idea - this softball program has been poor (no exaggeration) for the better part of 40 years now - you can look it up Before we invest in a new facility on top of the hill (where it will be cooler and windier in March and April), let's look at re-allocating Title IX resources. It would not be expensive to drop the program 'right now' and send those $ toward women's sports where we have a path to league championships: Lax, Soccer, Field Hockey and Volleyball.
We have all spoken about 27 varsity sports being too many and here we have an opportunity to shave one moribund program and reinforce other women's sports and remain Title IX compliant

According to the latest EADA data, Holy Cross had 358 male student athletes and 362 females. Dropping 18 of those females would put the numbers at below 50 percent for a school that has a general population of 53 percent female.

Would not the elimination of the softball program violate the Title IX consent decree?
I for one is not in favorite of throwing in the towel, but to finding a solution to improve and sustain the program. A new facility, sorely needed is a start. Looking at the roster, softball has provide a geographical outreach to regions in the south and west, that is of importance to the admissions profile of the College.

I would think that it would...but whether or not HC has softball is not a concern for me (unless they start to have more success than they have for the last several decades).

Her 49-127 (27 pct) 5 year record in a very average D.1 league is typical of every preceding coach we've ever had - stop the madness and get creative with Title IX - do you really think the government is going after colleges that are a pct point below strict compliance ? Give these funds to other deserving women's sports

After reading the Resolution Agreement, does anyone believe that Holy Cross could drop the Softball program at this time?

The date on that document is Oct 28, 2014 - 'immediate' improvements' ? ! - has anyone seen anything done so far ? if so, I didn't notice and our team stinks every year - since we've done little or nothing that has substantially improved the program in these 6 plus years, let's take all of those dollars and keep them in the women's athletic program where there can be some tangible results.

It's not just dollars, it's participants I believe. I hope they don't drop a sport like Softball that I can understand and enjoy without studying a YouTube instructional video.

Patriot League Softball has only 7 teams. If one team is removed, will there be enough for the automatic bid?
As a charter member of the Patriot League, can Holy Cross drop a sport?

Patriot League Softball has only 7 teams. If one team is removed, will there be enough for the automatic bid? As a charter member of the Patriot League, can Holy Cross drop a sport? Loyalty is a wonderful thing. Our co-founder schools are a good distance away but I have grown to admire them over the years. They are all fighting the same good fight as Holy Cross is. What a contrast to the Power Conference schools who leave their conference partners in a lurch at the drop of a hat and disputes are settled in court. I like the concept of the Worcester City Championship meet in swimming, a similar tournament could be held for softball to help increase local games and if HC gets smoked by WPI or WSU it could be the best thing to happen to the program because it could initiate needed improvements.
