I thought it might be interesting to check in on our 3 D-1 grad transfers: Brian Foley at Duke, Jack Bowler at Richmond (both on scholarship) and Joe Lang (preferred/invited walk-on) at Florida State. After a bit of due diligence on the 3 programs/fall camps, it appears that Foley and Bowler are working with the 2’s and/or 3’s and at best are trying to crack the 2-deep for opening week. It was always going to be difficult for either to earn a starting job week 1 in two programs that have more depth than HC and more talent (especially at Duke/marginally at Richmond) Both showed up on campus this summer and their best hope is to keep progressing in new systems as a 12-game season could enable either to work their way into the OG rotation. While it would be a considerable long shot for Joe to crack the 2-deep at FSU, he could very well earn some playing time on special teams (likely kick-off and/or punt return.) He did receive a shout out from the FSU D-Coordinator on Twitter for an interception during the team period of practice last week. See link below.

The outside pad can get torn up pretty quickly.

I thought that he graduated. This article makes it sound as though he is transferring for his senior year.

Duke Game notes out vs Charlotte: Foley starts the year at 3rd string LG. After some due diligence on the Duke O-Line, looks like Brian was beat out for the 2nd team spot by a transfer from Abilene Christian (Parmelly) that played sparingly at ACU the last 3 seasons but was an Honorable Mention All Southland Guard his one full season and team captain for 2 seasons. In fairness, Parmelly enrolled at Duke in January and played the entire spring with the team. Looks like Duke moved a RT that started several games in 2020 to RG to fill the two-deep on that side. I don’t want to read too much into this as it’s one player at one program but it’s a reminder of the difference in talent at the FBS Power 5 level and the FCS (and PL.) There are several unanswerable questions like “was Brian still hobbled during camp by his injury from the Spring?” “Is he right on the cusp and could still see 2nd half playing time if Duke gets well ahead in a few games?” Still, I’m sure this is not the outcome Brian wanted when he chose Duke over Vanderbilt and 6 other FBS offers. It will be interesting now to see if Jack Bowler can crack the 2nd string Guard spot at Richmond…. s3.amazonaws.com/goduke.com/documents/2021/8/30/Game_Notes_Charlotte.pdf

The Spiders have some BIG boys up front. Good for Jack…he should get some burn the second half v Howard this Saturday (unless Howard got a lot better when I wasn’t paying attention.) richmondspiders.com/services/download_file.ashx?file_location=https://s3.amazonaws.com/sidearm.sites/richmond.sidearmsports.com/documents/2021/8/31/Game_Notes_2021_Game_1.pdf

In reviewing the May 2021 Commencement Program, I could not find Matt C as a degree recipient. Perhaps he still had a course of two to be completed during the summer, to finish his degree requirements at HC.

He's gone and did squat at HC. True that he is gone and I'll meet you part way and say he was a bit of a disappointment. Since his father was a little behind me at HC, I was interested from the moment his name came up on Breezy's lists and wanted him to do well. It didn't work out exactly right, but he earned a degree and is getting to play at what may well be the right level for him and get an MBA. I am happy to follow all of these guys who are getting some extra time due to Covid.
