Sorry for my poor reading comprehension. Can you elaborate? I will be so bold as to take this one for Cru12. . . If a school, in this case Notre Dame, takes this little survey seriously and considers changing the nickname of the school to something that offends no one, people should not give money to the school. Cru12 seems to like (as do I), the approach former gov Bill Weld took about 25 years ago when a vocal minority was complaining about the UMass minuteman and the fact he was depicted with a gun I don't recall the exact wording, but to paraphrase: This whole conversation is foolish. We're not changing the nickname. End of conversation

I remember the Minuteman controversy quite well...and just how foolish I thought it was. After all, who would ever consider changing a mascot for something so foolish. Isn't there a statue of the Minuteman - with Musket - that is already famous? This country was not given its independence because we hurled "insults" at the Brits at Breeds Hill. Why not just rewrite history? Oh, I forgot that is what some now want to do. Never mind.

The Irish haven't stopped fighting. Their special forces have landed at Kabul Airport to retrieve the Irish Citizens who want to leave.
Although they did take WW2 off. Most assume they were part of the Allies, but like Switzerland they were neutral.

Until they do, I would suggest that this entire thread is just another thinly veiled effort by some to complain about what they now like to call "wokeism" and which they previously called "political correctness."

LS, that of course, excepts the Northern Irish.

Maybe there are some green-clad wee folks who find the ‘fighting’ moniker and mascot offensive. Apparently dwarves don’t like the ‘angry dwarf’ generalization so it might be something along those lines. (Actually, ‘dwarf’ might be an offensive term nowadays now that I think of it. Maybe that’s midget. Or both.) Whether some people are considering it offensive or not, I think (and I'm sure the doctors among us can either confirm or correct me), dwarfism is actually a medical term Midget is not and there are some people who do find the term offensive. There are even more people who find the term "midget" offensive when used in conjunction with the word "bowling" If there were any leprechauns they might be offended by the 'fighting' mascot and moniker at Notre Dame. Might as well pull the plug on the wee fella and his pasty visage. Erring on the safe side. After all, there may be folks now and in the future who self-identify as leprechauns.

Waging war on whimsical myths is going a bit too far.

I heard that King Brian is suing ND for copyright infringement, and Darby O’Gill is also annoyed. The leprechaun will be replaced by another cartoon. The one who really symbolizes mascots in general....... Ladies and Gentleman...... Here he is... At this point in my life...... All mascots are Dopey... 🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣 en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Darby_O'Gill_and_the_Little_People

RGS:
From reading the credits, it appears that one of your relatives directed the Darby O’Gill movie. One of my favorites growing up, even though I was terrified by the Banshee. It still gives me nightmares. 😊

An appropriate mascot from Irish folklore for either ND or HC would be “The Dullahan”. A mascot that would surely put fear into our opponents. en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Dullahan

The protesters have stopped being offended. The Leprechaun paid them off from his pot of gold. Good one. Isn't that what the Florida State crowd did with the Seminoles. Money talks. ND will be granted the FSU exception and the Fighting Leprechaun will live forever more. Hey, at least the Irish don't dump him out of a Paddy Wagon at midfield. It could be worse.

This so-called survey is both predictable and utterly absurd.

Maybe we could have a gender neutral leprechaun with a shield and (optional) foam sword as our new mascot. The Holy Cross Leprechauns. Totally non-intimidating and non-othering. I can’t be the first to think of that.

Trying to remember if we had a leprechaun when I was there. We probably did because Dopey type people can be found almost anywhere.

The woke nonsense continues. I see nothing wrong with the Leprechaun character. The Leprechaun is fine in my book. This is outrageous! Are you saying leprechaun's don't have feelings? #coexist #boycottKentucky

As an Irish American, I don't mind the leprechaun. I however do not like the moniker FIGHTING IRISH. It has its roots in a derogatory stereotype.

As to stereotypes - I know that some say all Irish like to drink and fight, but not everyone is an actor in The Quiet Man...or one of my relatives.

No insult meant to anyone but who is the "they"? Outside of a little known poll, I am not aware of any huge outcry. Some friends have expressed discomfort at the use of the Fighting Irish. Back in the '80's glory years of HC football, I heard an HC fan proclaim Holy Cross is the loving Irish not the Fighting Irish of ND. My friends thought she was a jerk. ND is a great university. But other than that most are enchanted by the leprechaun. Still looking for my pot of gold.

The way I heard it was Notre Dame was the fighting Irish and Holy Cross was the winning Irish. But then again, I wasn't close to campus in those days.

Never bet on my failing memory. Heard it at a football game at Fitton. Whatever. The people in my group rolled their eyes.
