ADMB was a star who has done a lot for Holy Cross athletics. He will be missed and will be hard to replace. I am encouraged about the future by this at the end of the announcement sent to me from the Crusader Athletics Fund:
We are committed to building on the foundation Marcus laid in Athletics. A successful athletics program is critical to Holy Cross as we seek to provide our student athletes with the opportunity to successfully compete at the highest level. I am working with Rick Patterson ’80, Chair of our Board of Trustees, and Doug Baker '81, Chair of the Athletics Committee of the Board, to quickly identify an interim director while we launch a national search for a permanent hire. Sincerely,
Vincent D. Rougeau President

He is a star who was bound to move up. But Creighton? Meh.

Chu, with all due respect, when you found a pile of sh!t under the Christmas tree did you say "there must be a pony around here somewhere?"

Doug Baker, the chair of the BoT athletic committee, is the executive chairman of a Fortune 500 company with 44,000 employees, and $15 billion in revenues in 2020.. Doesn't strike me as the sort of person who would not give Creighton an honest appraisal of MB.

You might be right, Phreek, but it's been known to happen that some executives give glowing reports of a subordinate they are trying to unload. Not at all saying that is the case here and I couldn't pick Mr. Baker out of a police lineup but not even sure the Board Athletic chair would be the guy giving a recommendation (definitely the guy leading the replacement search) and possibly Rick Patterson would be the guy as overall Board chair. For those who think we should have an alum as AD, can we bring Dick Regan back? Is it time for Gordie to walk away from the big bucks to help alma mater? (just trying to ignite the conversation )

It should have been Gordie two years ago....it should be him next month...enough of these "outsiders."

It would be terrific if Gordie would take the Athletic Director's position at Holy Cross.....understands sports and people. You could not ask for a better fund raiser for the athletic department, this is a paramount responsibility to this position today. Every AD in the country would know of his accomplishments receiving respect and considerations. I believe continuity for at least 10 years would result as well. The Worcester community would warmly receive this news. Holy Cross does not need to go far and spend recruiting dollars for this position.

Let's please not overthink this and put a committee together to conduct a "national search" -- make Gordie an offer. He wanted the job then and I'm sure he wants it now.

Job 1 for new AD: Get Coach Chesney's name on a new 5 year contract. 1A. Get a list of his top 5 football assistants to give competitive raises to. Lock them all up while it can still be done.

For those who think we should have an alum as AD, can we bring Dick Regan back? Is it time for Gordie to walk away from the big bucks to help alma mater? (just trying to ignite the conversation ) DR was gone because he could not shake the money tree. Of late, the problem with alums in senior positions at HC is that they have performed unspectacularly. Has Gordie had significant success in shaking the money tree? The interim chief investment officer is a HC alum; he has been interim for coming on two years now. His predecessor, another HC alum, decamped for a Catholic high school in Worcester. I watched the beginning of the Mass of the Holy Spirit for the class of 2025. Only eight Jesuits. I think there are several others in the community, but perhaps their health is such they could not participate. I'm still holding to my prediction that in 20 years there will be more statues of Jesuits on campus than live ones. It may have been that a priority assignment for ADMB on his hiring was to prepare the first strategic plan for athletics. In essence, a roadmap for the BoT to follow in rebuilding the athletic program, and it very much needs rebuilding. I personally don't think that was an original idea of his.

There have been a number of strategic plans or white papers over the past 30 years floating around the administrative offices. No one wants to address the status of the Patriot League. It is appropriate for a number of sports and is a hindrance of other sports. The BOT has to take an educated stance on athletics at Holy Cross, dealing with admissions, academic programs, sheer size of the school, outcomes upon graduation, endowment and what do you want Holy Cross to be.....in the athletic world. The college athletic scene changes very rapidly in today's world and we must adapt. Providing a stable environment for good coaches with commensurate pay should be a top priority for HC, showing continuity and support for the students that they receive from the professors in the class room.

Hope I am wrong about this, but I fear that Gordie Lockbaum does not fit the demographic profile tptb seeks. Minority/female status may be "table stakes" for the successful candidate. Any former HC athletes who fit the desired demographic come to mind as potential candidates?

IIRC, the vacancy announcement for the AD position was publicly posted after ADNP departed, and in reading the selection criteria, GL did not meet the criteria with respect to experience. Its likely that the same announcement, or one similar to it, will be posted again for the ADMB vacancy.

The timing isn't very good about this. Schools strongly prefer changes in leadership at the beginning of the fiscal year (July 1), not as the school year starts. Rasmussen's awkward departure at Creighton complicated this.
Absent an immediate promotion from within the ranks, HC goes with interim leadership for a number of months and many candidates won't be available until mid-year or next summer.

Agree but HC is stacked in the Department and maybe the interim will be more communicative and supportive then what some posters are indicating MB is. If there truly is a riff between Football and MB then maybe we will get addition by substraction by his leaving. And FB is presently our most important sport.

Unless we do hire someone who is not currently employed at a college, going to be a tough spot to fill with a strong candidate when the opening pops up the first day of the Fall semester.

Rose as interim and see how she does. I don't want another Brendan Sullivan who I didn't think was effective.
