Midwest, know you have eyes on this game — UNI down 13-10 to #7 Iowa State late in the 3rd quarter. UNI was picked to finish fifth in the MVC. The top FCS teams really aren’t that far away from the upper half of the FBS. UNI seems to play either Iowa or Iowa State every year, and they always lose by less than a TD.

Montana just beat #20 Washington 13-7 in Seattle
Eastern Tennessee has thoroughly dominated Vanderbilt (i've watched most of it), leading 23-3 late
This might have been a historic day for FCS vs FBS. There were a lot of great near misses as well...

College football shockers: Montana makes history upsetting No. 20 Washington, six FCS teams beat FBS opponents… Montana, ranked No. 9 in the preseason Stats Perform FCS Top 25 poll, walked out of Husky Stadium with a dramatic 13-7 win over No. 20 Washington.
The win was a historic moment for the FCS, but was only one part of what has been a tremendous start to the 2021 season. East Tennessee State crushed SEC opponent Vanderbilt 23-3 in a tough debut for coach Clark Lea while Holy Cross beat UConn 38-28. On Friday night, Dan Hawkins' UC Davis team upset Tulsa 19-17 and 2021 FCS runner-up South Dakota State crushed Colorado State 42-23. On Thursday, Eastern Washington beat UNLV, bringing the total number of FCS-over-FBS upsets to six.
Even more surprising, the numbers could have been even higher. Northern Iowa battled with No. 7 Iowa State and had one last chance to win the game, but fell just short 16-10. Montana State gave Wyoming everything it could handle before losing 19-16. Missouri State competed hard with Oklahoma State…www.cbssports.com/college-football/news/college-football-shockers-montana-makes-history-upsetting-no-20-washington-six-fcs-teams-beat-fbs-opponents/

Middle Tennessee State beat Monmouth 50-15. Middle Tennessee State plays VA Tech next, so that may be a measure of how good they are, or of how poor Monmouth is.

The top FCS teams really aren’t that far away from the upper half of the FBS. SOV, I fully agree (and have) that the Top 10 of the FCS is middle tier FBS football (probably in the ~55-75) range. They are REALLY GOOD. A lot of this just depends on match-ups. Overall, I was very impressed with the Top 15 of the FCS this week. Sometimes you just have to look game by game. Jack State (Top 10) gets destroyed by UAB (also probably mid tier FBS) but Montana creates enough turnovers to pull out the stunner against Washington. Northern Iowa (who always plays Iowa or Iowa State tough) looked good. Montana State comes real close against Wyoming (19-16.) My opinion is still that there is a pretty meaningful drop-off between the Top 10 FCS teams and the teams ranked ~15-30. I’ll have more to say about what I think I learned about HC and UCONN in another thread but if HC is a Top 15-25 FCS (which they look like), how many FBS teams could we beat this year? Maybe 5?…8-10 at the most?

Do not assume a lot about Monmouth after this game. The stat sheet is very even UNTIL you get to turnovers…Monmouth 4 - MTSU 0. MTSU is 10-20 points better than Monmouth on most Saturday’s but not 35 (and MTSU has some dudes) Monmouth and Fordham are going to be VERY hard to beat…as well as Yale and Harvard as always.

Maybe 5?…8-10 at the most? I think if you took the bottom 40 FBS teams and top 30 FBS teams and put them in a blender and stripped each school of their FCS / FBS title, it'd be difficult identifying who belongs in which division. The upper half of the Big Sky, Missouri Valley, and Colonial aren't really much different at all than the Sun Belt, C-USA, and MAC. Not to go back to UNI (but to go back to them), they took Iowa State -- who some have said is a CFP sleeper, to the brink. UNI is a middle-of-the-pack Valley team, based on preseason rankings. And while we will never know because FBS schools aren't playing roadies, you'd see a lot more FCS scalps if they had games at home against FBS opponents. I think HC could beat more than five FBS teams. I'd venture to guess we could, on the right day, beat 15-20 and be competitive with 30-40. I have some additional thoughts on our performance against UConn, too.

The Kennesaw State Owls only beat the Reinhardt Eagles by 10 points and the Owls are ahead of us in the rankings? That should change this week if there is any justice in the world. This is a great chart. Hosting Sacred Heart in the first round of the FCS playoffs would draw a good crowd at Fitton Field.

Bumping this thread back up only because I 1) enjoyed the banter, and 2) realized we are ranked ahead of 11 FBS teams in Sagarin's ratings: sagarin.com/sports/cfsend.htm
