It’s not USN&WR and who knows what wacky criteria they are using but it is relatively well known: www.forbes.com/top-colleges/Georgetown 21 Notre Dame 41 Colgate 48 BC 56 SBU 62 Lehigh 65 Lafayette 68 Bucknell 88 Nova 100 WPI 135 UMass 141 Holy Cross 148Fordham 168 The usual suspects are in the top 20.

Glad I never voted for Steve Forbes.

Forbes seems to be reflective of a downward trend which has been noted by some on this board. Spending millions on the off campus Contemplative Center did not impress them. Whatever criteria they are using it does not reflect well on the college.

Forbes is best known for creating a list that blends different types of colleges/universities (some prefer that for a number of reasons) ), USN&WR (released next week) gives a separate liberal arts colleges list.

While I am not happy to see how low Holy Cross is rated, the methodology seems to be broad in scope:

Forbes is giving great weight to the net cost to attend.
Harvard says that Pell grants are received by 17% of undergraduates.

We have steadily dropped in the Forbes rankings. We have also tumbled in the latest Washington Monthly rankings — #18 last year to #43 this year among liberal arts colleges. We will see on US News but I’m not optimistic. Still like to know what our new president’s plans are to increase apps and the geographic diversity of the school and get our rankings aligned with the price we charge to attend. washingtonmonthly.com/2021college-guide/liberalarts

This is what we published almost precisely 3 years ago regarding the same Forbes ranking: The College of the Holy Cross ranks No. 22 among liberal arts colleges, No. 35 in Grateful Grads and No. 59 overall in a group of more than 650 public and private colleges on Forbes’ list of America’s Top Colleges 2018.
In its 11th year, the Forbes list of America’s Top Colleges focuses on the direct benefits schools provide their graduates. The rankings are based on alumni salaries, debt after graduation, retention and graduation rates, and academic and career success. (My underline) news.holycross.edu/blog/2018/08/31/forbes-ranks-holy-cross-among-top-liberal-arts-colleges-in-the-country/This year we were ranked 32 among liberal arts colleges and 148 overall.

I keep getting a picture in my mind of Vince Rougeau is like the passenger on the airline where the pilot has had a heart attack and unconscious and he gets into the cockpit seat, grabs the yoke and pulls back as hard as he can to pull the apparently doomed plane from a screaming dive towards the ground. I haven't awoken from this dream yet. Tell me how it ends.
Probably just me, though.

Not just you. Smarter men that have known the college longer than I have debated the validity, accuracy, meaningfulness, etc. of these college rankings. One thing is fact: the rankings for some of the larger-name, better-known providers have seen HC drop over the last 15 years. We may not agree, we may not think they're important, and we may come up with all of the reasons, but my take is simple: if there's a list that HC is on, I want HC at the TOP of it unless it is for "dissatisfied students" or "most controversies."
We may not want to play the game to those rankings' rules, but if enough are independently or echoing the falling sentiment, something must be done.

USNWR has come out with their 2021 rankings. Holy Cross comes in at #35 for national liberal arts colleges in the US. Locally in Worcester, WPI comes in at #63 and Clark at #103 for national universities.

Wonder what our new president thinks of this ranking. Note that Colgate is tops among the PL schools (excluding the service academies) at #17.

Wonder what our new president thinks of this ranking. Note that Colgate is tops among the PL schools (excluding the service academies) at #17. He has banned all discussion of rankings on campus. Only kidding. The most intriguing aspect of HC's write-up to me is that 49% of students receive no need based financial aid. That is a major commitment from their parents and some of those families must have multiple children who will attend college in the same decade or so. I admire families who prioritize education and skip the boat or the vacation home in favor of giving their kids the best education possible.

Strangely enough, I generally admire very rich families who pay for their kids college, too. Private higher education as we know it, with all it contributes to society, would not exist without the full payers.

Some families who are not "very rich" also pay the full list price..... A thousand thanks to them. Or more accurately, thanks a quarter of a million...per child.
