At least as it relates to #3, many athletic departments were in the process of moving away from printed materials before COVID. The pandemic may have accelerated that. Usually places will have placards with a QR code that you can scan with your phone and it'll bring up everything electronically on your smart phone. I wasn't there and I have no inside knowledge so I really have no idea what happened and if that's what they're doing, but I know a lot of departments have made that transition with at least some sports. Thanks...but I'm much too much of a Luddite to do that.... We'll send someone to collect your old flip phone. Get with the times, man

My game-day experience wasn't that bad. Let's face it, Fitton is a great place to watch a game given its sightlines but it has nevah really been "fan friendly' in terms of seating comfort, rest rooms (for decades, troughs), concessions (Polar Cola, a cigar and a pretzel ) etc etc It's a great venue in that it's on campus, parking is somewhat ample nearby, the prices of game-day and parking tickets are exceedingly competitive versus most college/pro venues and so on. Things that do need to be improved for Harvard: 1. PA sound 2. Bettah/more effective use of the videoboard. 3. Making gameday programs or even line-up sheets/pamphlets available 4. Probably a better explanation/lay-out of how the beer/wine ticket system works...was behind a lot of people in line who didn't know you had to buy a ticket-bracelet before purchasing At least as it relates to #3, many athletic departments were in the process of moving away from printed materials before COVID. The funny thing is, FADMB was hanging his hat on all of the ways in which he was elevating the fan experience. Smoke and mirrors, it seems. Gee, where have we seen that before? Some things never change! Beer, the video scoreboard and food trucks can't be done with smoke and mirrors. But fair criticism for not having a cold opening to make sure every component worked smoothly for opening day since it is only "Show time" four Saturday afternoons this year.

I looked at the job openings on the HC website. I have never seen so many listings. Among the listings in athletics are ticket sellers, facility operations assistant (seasonal), Zamboni operator. In dining services, there appear to be some many openings, I'm surprised they are able to serve a full menu of meals to the students. Those who worked in these part-time, seasonal, intermittent jobs in the past, perhaps as a routine gig, are no longer interested in such. That's a consequence of there being little need for people to staff these positions during a campus shutdown, and no spectators. And when you do are-start, people have found other things to do. www.bls.gov/news.release/jolts.nr0.htmI assume series high means all-time high, for however long this employment data has been collected by the Bureau of Labor Statistics. ------------ On a somewhat related note, Gov. Baker called out the National Guard today to operate school buses, because of a shortage of school bus drivers.

Game day staffing issues are prevalent all across college athletics right now. Even Power 5 departments, ones with resources to spend on game day staff, are experiencing issues.

I dunno...there's something about having a physical program or roster in your hand....I look at the goddam phone too much as it is. Kind of hard to see the phone sometimes when it's very sunny too.
Sad, that those are going the way of the dodo bird. Wonderful art, writing, info etc in HC and Ivy programs from the 20th C.

Lot of retirees looking for extra money have shied away from working in heavy-contact-with-the-public type jobs.

Horse drawn buggies are not permitted on the baseball field or in the parking garage. Event security will direct all horse drawn buggies to the West Lot (more commonly called HoJo's)

Au contraire, the Amish would not want to mingle with the tailgating imbibers.

Au contraire, the Amish would not want to mingle with the tailgating imbibers. From "Amish 365" website: "Alcohol and the Amish. A lot outsiders just assume that the Amish don't drink alcohol. It's an assumption probably drawn from the Amish appearance of piety and plainness But the Amish also have a deep Germanic heritage and part of that culinary heritage is alcohol (I'm a quarter German, so I can say that), especially beer."

My daughter went to the College of Wooster in Ohio, very near the largest Amish community in the US. It wasn't at all unusual to see horses and buggies outside Walmart or Kohl's.

That’s what happens when you pay people more to stay home and collect unemployment benefits than they would make working. How TPTB don’t see this is beyond me. I guess economics 101 was not required for them.

Speaking of government spending, I learned recently that every kid in my fairly affluent town now gets free breakfast and lunch at the public schools. Gotta get me one of those money trees the government seems to have.

Gotta get me one of those money trees the government seems to have. You. You are the money tree. They shake it by raising your taxes ceaselessly. I would know. I live in NY metro area.
