Princeton 27 - Lehigh 7 Harvard 31 - Georgetown 10 UNH 30 - Lafayette 13 William & Mary 28 - Colgate 10 Penn 24 - Bucknell 7 FAU 41 - Fordham 14 Yale 27 - Holy Cross 20
We’ve seen two different HC teams in 2 weeks. Despite all the noise, I actually think the net overall TALENT between UCONN, Merrimack and HC is fairly close. UCONN is an absolute dumpster fire because of itsculture, coaching situation, lack of motivation to prepare/execute/win etc. Still, position by position (with the exception of QB), it’s not like the dispersion of talent between UCONN and Merrimack is something on par with Alabama and Vanderbilt. The difference in those two games was HC. Against UCONN, we played 4 quarters of inspired football, we made plays, both our lines played with some attitude and we minimized self inflicted mistakes (with the exception of the fumble on our own 3 yd line, lackluster punting game and a few late penalties that helped extend drives in the UCONN game.) I’ve already summized my take on the Merrimack game in that thread but essentially it was very different from what we saw against UCONN. And yes, again the Merrimack QB was way better than UCONN which I’m not minimizing. Here’s what I’m watching and thinking this week. If I think about this team’s potential on a continuum, what is the middle? What does our best look like and what does our worst look like? Is it somewhere between the two games…or is our median performance closer to either game? If it’s what we saw at UCONN this team goes 8-3 or 7-4. If it’s what we saw against MC, this team goes 6-5 or 5-6 (God forbid worse). I predict (and hope) we play closer to the UCONN side of the continuum this week but I don’t think that’s enough against Yale. We will have to play even BETTER than we did against the Huskies to win. Since I haven’t seen that yet, I have to go with the Bulldogs.
Below is my PM to a couple other posters after last week which I figured I’d just copy and paste to expand on my comments above: “The team will get a chance to test Chesney’s quip about “well managed failure” this week. I’m not sure that we “mis-managed success” just yet but did look to come out a bit flat across the board (again Ng two KO’s out of bounds?!!) We got punched in the mouth in the 2nd quarter and didn’t seem to adjust (thinking about Mike Tyson’s famous quote here…how “everyone has a plan till they get punched in the mouth”). I’ll be looking at our body language, demeanor, game plan and execution of sed plan as much as the final score on Saturday. HOW we win or lose will tell us as much (if not more) than IF we win or lose against the Bulldogs. It’s obviously tough to know exactly what we will get in Yale but it will likely be the same as it has for 20 years…big, physical lines and skill guys that don’t blow you away with speed or athleticism but just execute at a high level and get the job done. They are the “ice man” of the Ivy League if the IL was Top Gun (that’s the way he flies, ice cold no mistakes.) - Rest In Power Goose Merrimack is a GOOD FCS team and the top 4-5 programs in the NEC are on a quick upswing. Still, as I noted in my post, we were one play away with a slightly better throw from Sluka or amazing catch by Purdy from being up 14-0 early in the 2nd. I don’t think the wheels come off as much if that happens and the game ends up being a one score finish and battle in the 4th Quarter. Football is SO MUCH about momentum and we just couldn’t get or keep much of it last week. It happens. I agree MC either exposed what many us feared as our vulnerabilities heading into the season and we are on our way to a 6-5 or 5-6 season (going 1-4 OOC and runner up or 3rd place in the PL)…or we will look back in November to the MC game as a good thing to happen to us so early in the season…our guys proved resilient and it helped our coaches/players improve on our way to a 3rd PL Championship. The PL with the exception of HC, Fordham and maybe Lafayette looks to be REALLY BAD. It is what it is. Therefore, if we end up going less than .500 this season, it will be one of the biggest disappointments per pre-season hype since…well I don’t know when..”

I'll go with
Princeton--wiil be ugly. Lehigh has scored just 6 points in 2 (tough opponents) games. LU has used 3 QB's who have thrown 0 TD passes vs 6 interceptions. Harvard-- may be ugly UNH--- Lafayette could take this but I'll opt for the Wildcats Wm & Mary-- Colgate has also faced two tough opponents, but has scored but 3 points Penn-- Like Lehigh and Colgate, Bucknell has yet to score a TD. Bison have used 3 QB's who have a woeful composite of 22 for 53 for 133 yards in the air. Florida Atl-- FAU is the better team and at home Holy Cross-- Yale deserves to be favored, but I'm basing a pick of the Crusaders on Yale being rusty, HC being healthy (Oliver back?), HC making corrections after last week's unfortunate loss, and HC having some new tricks up its sleeve

Princeton Harvard UNH William & Mary Penn FAU -- I really want to pick the Rams but FAU played Gators fairly competitively and curb-stomped Georgia Southern Week 2. Holy Cross -- changed my pick last second here. Someone from the PL has to win. I believe our last win at the Yale Bowl was 2005 -- I'm feeling the defense coming out hungry today and hawking some TO's.

Princeton Harvard UNH William & Mary UPenn Florida Atlantic Holy Cross (Only because of Yale not having played in 22+ months, and no spring practice. That said, Sluka needs to generate 250 yards (passing, slithering) to keep HC's defense from being worn down.)

Tough to predict the Ivys with a year off and all teams playing for the first time in 22 months and even though the class of ‘21 was granted an extra year if they continue as grad students, there will be a lot of faces seeing their first significant playing time in college. I think there could be a couple of PL wins in the 4 games vs. Ivy opponents this week. The question is which 2. Here’s my guess.

Georgetown is 0-4 lifetime versus Harvard, outscored 22-151. It would be nice to see the Hoyas take today's game but I'd bet against it.

Betting? I never gamble. Since I always seem to lose on any wager it is not really a "gamble."

In another game of interest, Maine beat Merrimack 31-26 in Orono. Merrimack, down by 5, had the ball near the Maine goal line late in the 4th, and couldn't punch it across. Princeton over Lehigh 32-0. UNH by 6 over Laf. Harvard 44, GU 9. W&M leading Colgate.
