BC has decent FB attendance for being up against four pro teams at various parts of their schedule. I have anecdotal evidence that college students from other Boston area colleges without football or without big time football are getting together with BC students they know and attending the games and the pre and post game parties. It gives them a chance to sample one aspect of a college experience while still being able to take the course of study they chose at their fine institutions. Listening to sports radio over the years, you get the feeling that BC sports aren't held in high regard by many adult non-BC alumni sports fans, but perhaps the students at other schools appreciate having big time football and the concurrent party atmosphere available. HC FB isn't big time, but it is much more successful than BC FB lately. With beer sales and the video board, we are tip toeing back into the entertainment business. Chesney and PVR's attempts at improving town and gown relations can only help add to the attraction of attending a game at Fitton or Polar. I generally haven't thought it's fair or collegial, but perhaps it's time to say to schools with small capacity stadiums: "two games in Worcester, one at your place" to maximize the Chesney era. And/or offer UMass a reasonable guarantee to get on the Mass Pike East. BC football has qualified for a bowl game every year besides 4 since 2016. The players opted out in 2020 but were eligible. BC's game against Missouri had better attendance than Holy Cross had from every home game combined last season. 🙃 UMass isn't coming to Holy Cross to play and have a locker room in a tent. It is quite amusing that you really don't understand how stupid this statement sounds.

From 2013-2021, I think 2015 was the only year BC wasn’t bowl-eligible. They been stunningly consistent at right around .500 every year other than 2015.

Being bowl-eligible is not exactly a high bar and certainly doesn’t make BC in any way relevant on the national stage. They’ve got a nice northeast football program that will win some games against other mediocre FBS teams. Not the worst place to be but nothing to brag about either. When the dust settles, they’ll likely be on the outside looking in at the big boys unless they can convince the B1G that they need a presence in Boston in the new world order. Not sure why we care either way.

Not for Holy Cross fans. BC doesn't qualify for the NFL playoffs. Is that relevant to BC fans? Relevancy is relative.
Holy Cross can shoot for PL championships and FCS playoff wins. That's relevant to HC.
BC can shoot for their league championships (have they won any lately?) and not checking recently but bowls on FBS level are pretty much a dime a dozen and many teams getting in with barely a winning record. Nothing at all against BC, I wish them well.

BC winning the ACC, HC winning the PL, Assumption winning the NE-10, WPI winning the NEWMAC are all equally admirable accomplishments and there isn't any jealousy or envy between these fine institutions because none of those schools are trapped in their leagues or divisions. They all chose them as the right place at the right time for their mission.

UMass would have to pay tolls on the Pike, unless they took Rte. 9 all the way, but there are many other advantages to playing in Worcester instead of flying across the country to get a big can of whoopa$$ handed to them. They could compete, the team and marching band could build the UMass brand in their core market of MA and their alumni base could get to the game easily. I don't think decisions are made based on the couple of hours or so spent in a locker room. Money is a bigger factor and that game at Fitton has a good chance of drawing more than at McGuirk. The game vs Maine in Amherst last season only drew 5331. The Athletic Dept. should consider investing in a reasonable guarantee the same way they invested in a winning home field bid in the FCS playoffs. Plus the new UMass coach is from Spencer. Maybe we can have the Holy Cross alumni at Spencer Abbey send Coach Brown some preserves. If we play UMass in football anytime soon it will be in Amherst. The occurrence of an FBS school playing on the road at an FCS school happens about once a decade nationally. A handful of neutral site games have happened but they are rare. A game at Fenway might be feasible.

Not sure why we care either way. BC had a very nice run from about 2000-2008. While they still continue to manage bowl bids almost every year, the teams they had during that stretch were much more relevant nationally. They largely didn't get invited to bowl games any more prestigious than the garbage bowls they play in now, but that's mostly a function of the fact that BC doesn't travel well.

What do you think of HC paying a moderate FCS level guarantee to get some good teams to Fitton like they did to secure the playoffs home game? And UMass is FBS in name only. They need dance partners and don't have the same scheduling power that real FBS teams have. They don't currently bing much to the table when negotiating for games and guarantees. And their drawing power drops like a rock once they cross the state line. So playing HC has advantages for them that other FCS teams don't. I bet UMass would play Harvard in Cambridge (Allston actually) if invited to by Harvard. Harvard is 11-8-1 all time against the Minutemen. HC has two or three more OOC games per year than the Crimson and thus are a more likely in-state opponent. Here's a quirk, Harvard has played HC 72 times and league mate Columbia 79 times. I do think the UMass FB scheduler deserves a raise. It's a tough job.

But plenty of schools other than UMASS have been "FBS in name only" yet none scheduled road games against FCS teams. I'm not sure exactly why that is, all I know is that there's very little history of such events taking place. Even among bottom of the barrel G5 or low-level independent FBS teams. As far as guarantee game at Fitton, I don't know enough about the behind the scenes stuff to know how that would work. I wouldn't mind seeing us schedule a home and home with a strong FCS opponent like a Delaware, William & Mary or Furman.

You didn't knock HC football for 3 years because like you said Chesney would be successful. Now you feel the need to go after them. I don't know how many championships you won in your life but I guess they weren't that impressive. Please are you the one that watches the playstation bowl? BC wishes they could even compete for a conference title. On Umass the last game they played at FITTON had more fans then any of their home games last year. Again since you don't have a team we can't compare HC to your team. Then you say we won't host a playoff game in December. We will see about that. It must pain you to watch HC football win 10 games in a season.

I hate to detour this BC bowl thread, but returning to the actual topic of the thread...Rutgers athletic debt. There is a major story in The Record today (one of the state's main newspapers) about credit card abuse by Rutgers' players and coaches. Charges by coaches and athletes (when coaches were not present) include: * Luau and beach yoga at sunset in Hawaii * guided snorkeling tours in Puerto Rico * ax throwing in Texas * tickets to Disney World and Broadway shows * chilled lobster towers and Delmonino steaks in New Brunswick One beach party totaled $31,000, there was a charge of $20,000 for a bowling outing, and a tasting menu at an exclusive Manhattan restaurant that came out to a mere $85 per person. The school says many of these were "recruiting events." In all, there were over 30,000 purchases totaling almost $10 million. The record writers said that Rutgers treats NYC as if it were a second campus...and regularly sends coaches to Europe to "recruit" This $10,000,000 is in addition to the debt of tens of millions already accrued by the Rutgers athletic Department. a full share of BIG tv money does not start coming to Rutgers until 2023. There is now a call for a major financial overhaul of Rutgers' athletics. (PS: I doubt we will ever see that unless the governor steps in and stops this abuse of NJ taxpayers. I am not holding my breath.)

Unbelievable. Ridiculous. But it looks like a great job in the Rutgers Athletics Department. Would they be willing to hire an older guy? Love the luau. I could karaoke the Don Ho, Hawaiian Love Song. HA!!!!

Years ago there would be an occasional note in a T&G article such as the HC Women's BB team enjoying a trip to a play in Boston.
I just assumed the girls saved up for something like that and spent their own money for tickets as it would be against NCAA regulations for HC to pay for it if it wasn't lodging and meals for a road game.
That actually might have been true at a Holy Cross. Despite playing football, baseball and softball on a flood plain, HC is definitely not in the swamp like Rutgers.

Now if the football coaches were going to Europe to recruit, I could question it. Rutgers has one true European on their men's basketball roster. The Aussie went to high school in California. The women's program doesn't have any but they only list seven players right now.

Having spent 3 glorious weeks on a tour of Australia, it's about as far away from Europe as you can get. That said, maybe you think "Aussie" is someone from Austria - which is in Europe. When I need a dose of Australia, I go to this webcam: webcamsydney.com/
