Get the dump out of your pants. On the road and spotted the Ivy League favorite 14 points and found a way to win the game. You’re reminding me of the ultra-defensive Bill Carmody superfans, people who made up their mind about how great a coach was before even watching a game and thought there was absolutely no place for any criticism. I want HC to win and I want Chesney to be the guy — especially if we keep this new trend of hiring empty suit ADs who have no clue what they’re doing, because our chance of hitting on the next guy will be slim. But I just don’t see how you can think we are on the right track with this offense. We are getting to a point where teams are going to be able to start negatively recruiting against it (if they haven’t already started). If you were a good high school QB, would you want to play in this offensive system? I am not in agreement. Everybody wants the perfect offense but this offense is going along just fine. The record 2-1 2-0 on the road. What do you want the West Coast Offense? The Air Raid? 50 passes a game and 3 INT's? Look at the FBS teams they run the same offenses. This HC relies a lot on the defense. By the way how did the great Yale running back Dudek do? How about Mensah on UConn? On the PL Fordham would have a few wins if they weren't playing really tough teams. FCS 10 wins over FBS this year. That says all you need to know about the FBS.

At some point, maybe now, the PL brass has to be embarrassed by this. If they aren’t and refuse to even take small steps like going to 63 scholarships in an attempt to remedy the situation, maybe HC should look for a better conference. The 60 scholarships are a head scratcher. It's like saying we aren't going to tie one hand behind our back, just one finger.

How about when we went down 37-13 in the 3rd quarter to Monmouth? How about when we lost 31-3 to SDSU? How about when we gave up an average of 470 yards in those two games? How about when we gave up an average of 267 rushing yards in those two games? Chesney has proven that his system can beat teams with less talent than HC (again, kudos to him for recruiting the talent), but we’ve gotten punched in the mouth both times in the playoffs. Many seem satisfied with winning a dreadful pL and not having a chance in the playoffs. Sadly for myself, my bar doesn’t default that low.

So, you were not impressed with yesterday's win? I wasn’t impressed with the way we played offense, which is an ongoing issue that places a relatively low ceiling on the program. Defense has been impressive (minus Merrimack…). I am also getting somewhat concerned that we’re going to lose both Dobbs (a once in 15-20-30? year defensive player) and Scott James over the next two years, and are we really going to waste their time at HC with this offense?

I see both sides. Yesterday - fantastic win. But like Caro I want more too. Great start to season. But ultimately I’d love 8-3/9-2 type stuff with a playoff win. Hopefully this is the year we get that.
Have to keep recruiting! Need more fish in the boat on the next class! On to Monmouth!!

Cherry picking two games in 3+ seasons one can prove almost anything. How about the two wins over Yale? Many seem satisfied with winning a dreadful pL and not having a chance in the playoffs. Sadly for myself, my bar doesn’t default that low. I want to see league wins and it is not necessary for the PL go be "dreadful" for me to appreciate a championship and entry into the post season.

I think we’ll continue to fill vacated slots with the same caliber of player. I’ve mentioned before that HC is recruiting kids at a higher level then some BCS schools. In other words, kids that are getting FBC interest/offers can’t even get a look from HC. And good students too.
Our problem on offense, if there is one, is an embarrassment of riches. We have two quarterbacks who are great in different ways. It seems Chesney is really thinking ahead here and trying to create an offense that utilizes both of their skill sets, so that we do not let talent go to waste. There’s really no script for this and it will require some trial and error. We’re building the plane as we’re flying it and the fact that we’re 2-1 right now is amazing. I can see the strategy coming into focus weekly.
And by the way, Merrimack is a good team. By the end of the year we will see this play out. It’s a new day and new FCS teams are rising. It’s good to see this level of football getting stronger with all the FBS wins.

He is not an offensive genius who is reinventing football with a 2 QB approach that nobody else has thought of over the last 100 years. We have one guy who is a runner and has trouble completing contested throws. And one guy who is a passer, but apparently not good enough to be used as more than a gadget player. If Siderman was able to scale his limited reps over the last two weeks (7-9, 159 yards) at anything close to that rate over a larger sample size, he would be an All-American, we would be a top 10 team in the country, and there would be no need to play Sluka. Are there any examples that anyone can cite of a team who has been successful over any type of extended period with one quarterback who runs and another who passes?

Over Coach Chesney's tenure we have been a much higher scoring team in the second half of game than in the first half, Here's the composite scoring by quarter for our 31 games since Bob Chesney took the helm.
Holy Cross= 104--192--181--248--3 OT points
Opponents=219--248--147--129--0 OT points
So this is a perfect topic for debate and how one interprets it may depend on one's predisposition
(1) Chesney teams struggle to get the offense started-- bad, bad, bad!
(2) Chesney teams are not prepared for their opponents and always get off to a bad start-- bad, bad, bad !
(3) Chesney teams are so well-coached that they "adjust in the locker room" and exploit opponents weaknesses in the second half game after game-- good, good, good!
(4) Chesney teams are well-conditioned and when our opponents run out of gas we are still fresh, strong, quick late in the game-- good, good, good!
This is like so many topics we discuss: if you have a "confirmation bias" you'll immediately interpret evidence to support your firmly held belief.
I think I could do this for PL games only and it would tell the same story

The back & forth here made me decide to go back and look at exactly what my expectations were pre-season for this point in the schedule. Some right-ons and one total swing and a miss!:
So, while many are satisfied with the 2-1 start, I guess I'm very slightly disappointed with not going 3-0.

Personally, I'll go to my grave believing most football games are decided with 1-2 yards from the line of scrimmage. Like, I don't think HC was beating S. Dakota State if Sid Gilman, Don Coryell, Mouse Davis or June Jones was coaching instead of Chesney.
Food for thought: Sluka/Siderman combined have not yet played the equivalent of 1 college regular season.

You asked: “Are there any examples that anyone can cite of a team who has been successful over any type of extended period with one quarterback who runs and another who passes?”
I’m sure their has been, to some degree. But let’s say the answer is no. This proves my point exactly. If we are going to have a legitimate two QB system that actually provides some sort of advantage, it’s going to take a little more time to develop maximal effectiveness. I have no idea if that’s actually the plan, nor can I predict if it will work. One need not have purple glasses to credit the current offense for doing well enough to beat UConn and Yale.

So, you were not impressed with yesterday's win? No. We should have put 30 plus points on board. The “don’t lose game”philosophy on offense is getting old. However that philosophy probably wins PL but lose again in playoffs by 20-30 points. Yesterday offensive production was awful. Not impressive. They completed 11 passes yesterday, 11!! 148 yards passing and 2-13 on 3rd down. Teams will stop the run, last two games they did and thank god the defense played amazing and notched the W. However if the season goal is to win the PL that probably is a lock with how good the defense can play. Next week will be a rough one but look for the defense to keep it close but run out of gas.

I have not seen this mentioned IIRC. Yesterday one announcer said that if you want to understand what Matt Sluka contributes, think of the quarterback position being played by Larry Csonka. For those old enough to remember that conjures quite an image.

Heard that and having personally seen Csonka in action, there is very little in common with Sluka. Larry literally ran over defenders, no "slithering" in him. No finesse - pure raw power (having spoken with some football classmates that were run over by him and watching him in the NFL). Perhaps an analogy: Csonka was a Mack truck and Sluka is a Porsche. Both may have a lot of horse power but one is very maneuverable, the other not so much and not necessary to get the job done.
For me, that was just another example of the nonsense they spread yesterday. I would say they don't know what they are talking about but they were former Yale coaches IIRC.

I think I could do this for PL games only and it would tell the same story #4 is certainly a key component in Chesney’s program. The new Strength & Conditioning coach he brought over from Assumption appears to be excellent. Another explanation echoing Kaftan12 — we play not to lose and are extremely conservative in the first half, and then finally give guys chances to make plays when we start needing points. I would be very interested in seeing these stats broken out by quality of opponent.

Perhaps the natural talent portion of Sluka's game, the Slither, can and has been effective right away in his college career but the refined skill areas of quarterback play require more ongoing reps and coaching to perfect. As Ralph Willard said, the Patriot League is a senior driven league.
I like having both options at QB. If either one could have taken over the Merrimack game we'd have our answer already but neither could.

Mine is either anecdotal or 2/3 hand They suggest when the staff believes he is ready?? he might be the best of the three at the position to run/pass But not good and reliable information that is why I ask

I’m glad we’ve gotten to the point where people are still very critical after we just beat an FBS team and one of the top two teams in the IL. Pretty impressive stuff considering where we were a few years ago. We’re certainly not perfect but we’re pretty darn good.
