Massey has Monmouth as a 6 point favorite (27-21) with a 66% chance for the win. If HC can do to Monmouth's running game what they did too Yale and Dudek today, I really like our chances.

We need to stop spotting opponents 7-14 points before we score. That was an issue 2 seasons ago.
Colgate down 24-7 and has the ball but not likely to pull out a win with 7:51 left.

I predict 38-21 with some garbage points at end. Monmouth will not let up and will be playing for improving ranking. Offense will remain in place and defense will try to hold on but 3&outs will tire them out quick.

Remember Monmouth has 2 of their best defensive players out for the season.
Injuries happen, and Monmouth has already had its share. Middle linebacker Starters Da’Quan Grimes, defensive end Kahari Scarlett and right tackle Justin Szuba are all out for the season after getting hurt in the preseason

Monmouth blasted Charleston Southern (41-14). They last week beat Fordham (26-23). They lost their opener to Middle Tennessee (50-15). This could be a freewheeling game on Saturday. So this year they are 2-1 (all away games) scoring 82 points and giving up 87. Holy Cross will be their first home game.
GO CROSS.

First three games here are the match ups. TOP and offensive efficiency seem to be on Monmouth side. Defensive turnovers and kicking game seem to be HC strength. PPG are similar so the big opportunity is to hold on to ball keep Juwon Farri RB and Terrence Greene WR off the field. You can argue strength of schedule but looks like Monmouth can put up some points.
HC Monmouth PPG 26 27 3rd down Conv 25% (9-36) 41% (20-49) 4th down Conv 60% (3-5) 63% (7-11) Total 1st downs 51 67 Comp % 55% 65% Pass yards (Start QB) 340 648 Rush Yards 559 430 Kicker PTS 19 16 Turnovers 7 3 TOP 29:17 34:25

Defense turnovers. 4 against UCONN, 2 against Merrimack, 1 Yale. Got it. Thanks for the clarification. I feel much better Looks like we’ve had at least 1 takeaway in the three games we’ve played in. Let’s keep the streak alive this Saturday!

If we play well, there's no reason we can't be very competitive on Saturday. As long as we don't wait until almost halftime to get some semblance of offense going, this should be a great game. Both teams will be fired up.
Couple points:
1) Monmouth is riding something like a 12-game winning streak against the Patriot League. Fordham played right with them 2 weeks ago. Last 2 Monmouth losses against the PL were Fordham in '16 and HC in '15 -- the last time we were in WLB for a regular season game. Fordham's loss to Monmouth in 2016 cost them an at large to the playoffs. That was the year they boat-raced us at Yankee Stadium. 2) We still have a fighting chance at an at-large playoff berth if we beat Monmouth and Harvard. 4-1 OOC + 5-1 PL would likely get us into the 24-team field. Wouldn't it be nice to head into PL play knowing that a loss to Fordham wouldn't completely torpedo our chances of going to the playoffs?

Just being in a bubble discussion in any sport would be positive. Has the PL ever had an at large FCS entrant?

Off the top of my head: Colgate & Fordham in 2015 Lafayette & Fordham in 2013 Lehigh & Colgate in 2003 AND 2004 IIRC. Lehigh and Lafayette in 2005? With the field expanding to 20 in 2010 and then 24 in 2013, in theory should be easier for us to get an at-large more often. Hasn't really turned out that way, however...

We also need to eliminate the penalties. On Yale’s second score, we had 30 yards in penalties. Can’t give up free yardage like that and expect to be successful. Make the opponent earn it.

Not sure if this was posted yet. WEST LONG BRANCH, NJ- Monmouth University's football team had three players named to the STATS Perform Preseason All-America team, the organization released recently. Graduate student AJ Farris (Newark, DE/Eastern Christian Academy) and senior safety Anthony Budd (Riverdale, MD/Good Counsel) were named to the second team while junior Juwon Farri (Germantown, MD/Northwest) was a third team selection. Budd was recently named as the Big South Preseason Defensive Player of the Year. The safety is a two-time first team all-league selection, having started 26 career games over the last three seasons. Last year he led the team in interceptions and had 26 tackles including two for a loss. The Riverdale, MD native has recorded seven interceptions in the last two years. Budd has 126 career tackles including 90 solo stops and has registered 16 passes defended. Farris recently was named as the 2020 Rimington Award winner – annually handed out to the best center in college football at each division. The Delaware native has appeared in 27 contests for the Blue & White with 19 starts. He was a second team All-American during the Spring and is a two-time First Team All-Big South selection. Farris has led an offensive line that has paved the way for record setting running backs and quarterbacks and four separate Walter Payton Award candidates. Farri, the Preseason Big South Offensive Player of the Year, led the nation in scoring in spring 2021 en route to earning Big South Offensive Player of the Year honors. He was a consensus Second Team All-America honoree, averaging 5.0 yards per rush and scoring 10 touchdowns in four games, finishing with 520 yards. He had three games of 100+ yards while ranking first among conference members in seven different offensive categories. Monmouth, the two-time defending Big South Champions, return 21 of 22 starters from last year's team. The Hawks begin the season ranked 11th in most of the national preseason polls.

The HC defense will keep Monmouth under 30 points. Fordham held them to 26 points and Monmouth had over 460 yards of total offense (268 passing 200 rushing). Fordham also had big success throwing the ball for over 350 yards and ran it for 117 yards so seems like there is some opportunity to expose the secondary. One thing to point out is that Monmouth does a good job controlling the ball they had the ball on offense for 34:15. If we keep it close in the 4th quarter I like our chances.

Bassett has the game Monmouth 31.5 to HC 28. I hope we've had enough time to game plan, especially for our offense. As NY mentioned, it really should be treated like a play-in to the playoffs. Hard to look this far ahead to Fordham or the FCS playoffs, so I think we need to zero in on this one first.

Pretty sure that I’ve heard Chesney say that his philosophy or strategy was to focus on the next game ahead.
If we on Crossports recognize how important the Monmouth game is, I guarantee you the coaches and players know too.

Hearing from sources that a team member tested positive for COVID. Hopefully this is isolated and won’t adversely impact the team during the remainder of this week.

According to Kevin Shea’s most recent broadcast, we have something like 22 players from NJ and those players are anxious to play in their home state. Interesting that nearly a quarter of the roster is from the Garden State at this point. I expect/hope that they will be playing with extra purpose this week in front of their hometown family and friends. My prediction is Cross by 1.

Hopefully, it’s isolated and at a position where we have some depth (WR). Missing Prince (with Covid) in the Merrimack game hurt especially against the run and the drop off in depth at DB seems pretty noticeable (per my comments in the Yale Thread Takeaways.) Another position group to watch is D-line as Johnson is likely out a few weeks with that shoulder injury. Sophomore Dyer looked to be the next man up after Noah but if the COVID case is among this position group, we may be forced to run more 3-3-5 defensive schemes (which looked good against Yale and I’m sure Monmouth will see on film and be prepared as we brought a lot of pressure out of this front.)
